Re: What book are you currently listening to? (Audiobooks Only Thread)
I used up with "free" Pandora hours to listen to a couple of books on a long (11 hour) drive to visit family.

A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers. "Cozy" sci-fi was a great fit for a drive ... Chambers' books are like a big hug, with some moments that can make you choke up a bit. Great narration as well.

Home is Where the Bodies Are by Jeneva Rose. While I'm open to "popcorn" mysteries, this wasn't really my thing. Too much grim and uncomfortable family melodrama, and as opposed to the other book I listened to absolutely not a good thing to put me in a positive mindset while driving. I did like how they had a different reader for each POV chapter. But they were a mixed bag: a couple were really good but one sounded like a robotic text-to-voice program. And while he may have succeeded in what he was asked to do, the chapters by the condescending arrogant rich tech bro were awful to listen to.

Wow I haven't thought about my audio books in decade. I bought 8 books for cross-country drives. They are:
Jurassic Park (Michael Crichton)
Next (Michael Crichton)
Coma (Robin Cook)
Neverwhere (Neil Gaiman)
Angels and Demons (Dan Brown)
The Da Vinci Code (Dan Brown)
Sleep No More (Greg Iles)
The Book of Unholy Mischief (Elle Newmark)
They have sat in my closet for years, forgot about them until I saw this thread. I enjoyed all of them, but my favorite was The Book of Unholy Mischief. Fantastic mystery involving food. It is beautifully narrated, fun, interesting, great for long drives. .Not sure what to do with them all now. Hmm...

So I have finished both Paul Stanley and Gene Simmon's audio autobiography read by themselves.
Paul was a tough listen because his speaking voice kinda grates on my nerves. Better to listen to in small bits, which I did. He is always the victim throughout and rarely is something his fault. I will give him credit for what he has achieved though having been born with only one ear. Pretty impressive.
Gene Simmons' book was also better in small bits though his reading voice is not as annoying as Paul's. Everyone knows he is conceited as fuck, but he does give some interesting stories here and there and doesn't always play the victim like Paul seems to. He has also done a couple of other "self-help" audiobooks, but I don't think I could possibly tackle those at this time. You can only take so much of him.

I read the perfect description of Gene and Paul on reddit the other day. Gene is a nice guy acting like an asshole and Paul is an asshole acting like a nice guy. After reading both their autos and Peter's so far, I would 100% agree with this.
Next audiobook for me is The Dirt. Should be interesting and hopefully much better than the Netflix biopic.

I finished The Dirt and it was quite enjoyable. They had 4 soundalikes read for Nikki, Vince, Mick and Tommy so that made it easy and fun to follow.
It is amazing the 4 of them are still alive and I can imagine, as crazy as the book is, their life was even crazier than described in it.

I recently listened to Dead Lake by Darcy Coates. I mentioned it in the other thread but just thought I would post it here to warn others as it is a real stinker. Just terrible writing. Like a high schooler came up with a Twilight Zone episode and their AP English teacher encouraged them to write a book for it. The main character does so many stupid things that you want her to die pretty quickly and the (mercifully) hastily written ending ties everything up in a silly, pretty bow that feels more an example of writer's block than anything else.

I tried listening to Sex Money KISS read by Gene Simmons, but it gets annoying quickly. His autobiography is plenty (also read by him) and this book covers a lot of the same ground but with him giving his financial and life coaching advise. It is as insufferable as it sounds. it is under a 5-hour audiobook and I got more than halfway through but it is so repetitive and his "advice" so self-serving and general that one could hardly call it the self-help book he so wants to consider this.

I needed a change of pace, before the month of "all horror, all the time" begins, so I am currently in the middle of Prison Days: Inmates by Simon King. Lots of real, harrowing stories written by the prison guard who witnessed them. Pretty creepy, real-life horror stuff so far. A couple of parts have already made me almost gag with the descriptions the various situations. It really shows how awful we are treating the mentally ill in this country and how people born with resources are fucked right from the start.
