Book 2 of the last of the Elderlings Book series (that's book 15/16 for the whole shebang.) Be sad when I'm all done.

I just finished this too (after reading Book 1, Fool's Assassin)! Book 3 looks to be a monster though (just shy of 1000 pages for the Kindle edition).

Has Robin Hobb retired? I don't see anything from her since this series (Book 3 came out in 2017). Before that there was no more than a 2 year gap between books. Granted she's 70 now, so power to her if she's taking it easy.

I wouldn't blame her, she's done a life's work with these books.

I think I'll be so bereft when I finish the series that I'll try the Soldier Son books ...

Good luck with that! Though maybe if you approach the series knowing it's her most disliked trilogy (by far), your expectations will be set so low that you may enjoy it. It's been a while, but I remember liking the first book. It's a very different kind of world than the Elderlings ... industrial revolution-like rather than the standard middle-ages Europe-like. I was interested in where things were going after the first book. And Hobb is just a good writer. The second book is where things really derailed for me. Having faith that Hobb would turn things around kept me going ... if it was a writer I was new to, I would've bailed on the series.
Spoiler:
The whole "fat magic" system just seemed laughable. And it just struck me strange that people in this world reacted to the main character becoming obese as if he turned into a monster or something. I don't know if Hobb was working through personal issues of some kind, but it was weird and unpleasant. And after the first book, the main character was just excruciating to follow. One of the most passive and sad-sack "heroes" I've ever seen in a book.

this somehow intrigues me more.
bias: I thought the dragon riders books were pretty great and REALLY like the mad ship ones

The Main by Trevanian. A hardboiled detective novel about an old beat cop. He is The Law in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Montreal, called The Main, the seam between the French and English neighborhoods, inhabited by poor immigrants and prostitutes. In the 1970s he is an leftover, with most of the force replaced by modern police methods. He has to solve a murder. But the book is really about the neighborhood and the interaction of personalities.

It's very different from his books about assassins.

I looked up the street called The Main on Wikipedia. In the decade after the book was written, all the immigrants were run off and the street taken over by young wealthy people.

I'm still here! Still working on Count of Monte Cristo! It's long, but I'm enjoying it. Quite a change from all the time travel/sci-fi I'd been reading!
