I was holding off on these until he finishes one day (maybe) but since I want to vote for the Hugos and the fifth one is a nominee, I'm reading them all now.

John Sayle's "A Moment in the Sun." An excellent snapshot of the U.S. imperialism, racism, and military life at the turn of the 20th century, told in novel form. Highly recommended.
