I'm almost halfway through it and the main character has yet to exclaim "aw, hell no!" Kinda disappointed.
(I'm really enjoying the book.)

Re: What are you reading? (May 2012)
Right now I am reading "Packing For Mars: Life in the Void" by Mary Roach.
It is so good. I loved her first book "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Cadavers". and "Spook: Science Tackles the After Life", but I was really disappointed by "Bonk: The Science of Sex", but this book is so interesting so far.
It deals with Space and how living in such an alien enviorment can be deadly to people. Well written. I am about half way through.

About 1/4 way through:
Despite it being set in the current time (well, mid 90s in this case), it's very much a sequel to Smith's previous "River God" (which took place in ancient Egypt). You should definitely read "River God" before this one.

BTW, finished this. While not one of my favorite books by Dan Simmons, an interesting effort. Perhaps those into Charles Dickens would get more out of it. I can see the writing style (as if from Dickens' time) and length (the whole thing seems about twice as long as it needs to be) being barriers to many people enjoying this book.
