Re: What are you reading? July 2011
Just started:
The Story of Civilization, Volume IV: The Renaissance - Will Durant
Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America - David Hackett Fischer
Just finished:
The Story of Civilization, Volume III: The Age of Faith - Will Durant
In the Beauty of the Lilies - John Updike
Just stopped:
The Professor and the Madman - Simon Winchester
(poor writing in general; specifically, couldn't read one more entirely incorrect use of the word "unprecedented")

I've been reading The Chronicles Of Narnia for the last couple of weeks, just finished The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader. I gotta tell you, I wasn't really that impressed with that story. It seemed to me like, besides searching for the missing Lords, there wasn't much to it as far as plot is concerned. It seemed to me like Lewis was just basically making shit up, whimsically/willy-nilly, as he went along, from one outlandish situation to the next. At least with The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, and Prince Caspian, it seemed like there was a story to be told, with a beginning, a middle, and an end. It didn't seem like that with Dawn Treader. The ending felt rushed as well, as if he'd suddenly discovered that he'd spent far more time on this story than he'd intended to. To tell you the truth I'm glad it's over, I hope the movie is better. Now on to The Silver Chair. -kd5-

Re: What are you reading? July 2011
After much debate, I finally purchased a Kindle 3 locally before my trip to Jakarta a couple weeks ago. I loaded my previously-purchased Sriracha Cookbook and HP Lovecraft Collection onto it, but also decided to buy the first novel in The Dark Tower series by Stephen King; The Gunslinger. I had tried to listen to the audiobook many months ago, but couldn't get into it. Reading the eBook on the Kindle, though, has been an excellent experience. It's the "revised" edition, so I'm not entirely sure what's different, but I'm about 70% through it and I'm really enjoying it. I can't wait to start book #2!

I just wrapped up The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Maybe its just me, but I kind've feel that its abit overrated.
Does anybody have any impressions of The Girl Who Played With Fire? I mean, is it paced better than the first book?

Personally, I think the first book is by far the most effective in the series, and then the second two are like one long boring ill-advised sequel.

The Girl Who Played WIth Fire, to me, started out a bit odd and for about the first quarter of the book, I found myself not really interested in what was going on. The intensity does ramp up a bit towards the end and as it leads into book 3. I found book 3 better than book 2, but neither, as FunkDaddy said, is better than Dragon Tattoo.

I did enjoy reading all three, however. But I can see people not continuing the series. Luckily the first book is pretty much a standalone entity. Books 2 and 3 basically continue on the characters and a minor plot point. But, if you ever read book 2, you'll want to finish the trilogy as book 3 wraps up storylines from book 2.
