Yeah, you could even go back to Lord of the Flies, I suppose. Apparently there's finally an audiobook of Battle Royale, narrated by Marc Dacascos, no less! It's available only in iTunes near as I can tell, I wish I didn't prefer CDs. More importantly, it's pretty expensive. Maybe I'll pick it up at some point though, I've heard a lot about it. I liked The Hunger Games novel well enough, certainly nothing new, but a good yarn with some effective social commentary.

The Most Dangerous Game predates Lord of the Flies by thirty years.
It's on Audible too. If you use a credit, the price would be the same as the paper book.

Death games for entertainment (man vs man, man vs lion, whatever) in the Colosseum in Rome beat all of these movies & books by a few thousand years.
