Finished it Saturday, and overall I liked it quite a bit. Self-contained enough to be a standalone, yet with enough dangling bits for future volumes.

Hey, I was there, too. Crazy.

I liked the way he presented himself. Well spoken, intelligent, and funny. And the section he read certainly makes me want to read the book.

I started this on Sunday. So far, so good. Definitely feels King-ish in how indepth Cronin goes into character's back stories and motivations.

Haven't read it yet, but was very pleased to get this as a birthday gift a couple of days ago. I plan to start delving into this after the 4th of July.

Felt that same. A mostly fun summer read but nowhere near on par with The Stand or The Road. Still, looking forward to the next installment. Enjoyed...

Spoiler:
...the Wolgast-returns sequence (with Alicia observing) and the potential for the crew to eventually come across Carter (him and Wolgast were the two most/best developed characters in the book, IMO).

Didn't like: Cronin has no ear for dialogue...most of the characters sound exactly the same and when they do speak, it's mostly stilted and forced-sounding. Also, I didn't think any of the after-the-jump characters were developed enough to make me care for them. Alicia is interesting in her Ripley-ness, but the rest are bland and one-dimensional, particularly Mausami, Theo, and Greer.

Despite the dislikes, I still powered through this in just over a week. Tough to put down at times.

Re: The Passage by Justin Cronin

Finished this yesterday & I totally agree with all of TimeandTide's complaints above. Its definitely worth reading, but almost feels like a different author wrote the book after they extremely gripping first third of the novel. I never really cared for any of the future-characters mostly because they had no distinct personality except Lish who was just a stereotype (tough female warrior). Also the last third of the book was a bit sloppy, too many characters kept coming & going, the action was boring. The last few pages were really good though.

A good summer read, worth reading, but certainly not worth the hype.

I'm a little bit past the jump ahead, and agree with all of those who said that it slowed down. At this point in the story, it reminds me of A Song of Ice and Fire for some reason that I can't quite put my finger on. Regardless, glad to hear that it starts to pick up the pace a bit, especially since I am not even halfway through the book yet.

I have read many good reviews of this book. My sister recently read it and liked it. She borrowed it from a friend but she said she is planning to buy a copy and she told me she will lend to me. I'll probably be reading this book sometime in the next few weeks.

But maybe thats me.

That said I'm around 350 pages in & I too don't like the change in story, characters, or particularly writing style (although I guess this speaks a lot for the great talent that the author is). But I have no clue where the story is going & clearly it is of such an epic scale I'm by no means writing the book off. It just right now isn't as riveting as I found the pre-jump story to be.
So you are saying that if no one had told you about the jump, you would have hated the book less?

Sure.

On the whole a giant MEH. It's interesting how little action there actually was in the book, and how much of it was people standing around yakking or giving each other deep meaningful glances of unrequited love. And the descriptions of the actual attacks by the dracs sucked, no good gooshy bits whatsoever.

I do have a question which I will spoiler box for the losers out there who bleat and shriek about such things:
Spoiler:
Does the last journal entry mean that those at the refuge were massacred by the dracs without reuniting down in Houston with the others?

Huh? I have no idea what you are referring to? Nobody told me about the jump, I wrote that I didn't know about it when I read the book. And I never once said I hated the book, I said it doesn't live up to the hype but its worth reading.

I'm about 250 pages in so far and I'm hooked. I'm not a huge fan of the "vampire" angle and I can see things getting very cliched... but I'm hoping for the best because my last few novels have been The Road and The Dark Tower series (both excellent) and Dan Brown's latest novel (not so excellent).

Finished this book today! It was excellent and I cannot wait for the second book -- the only bummer is the two year wait. I could easily see this translated to a big action flick.

I enjoyed this book but do agree with most of the people who said the middle portion bogged down. I think some of the minor characters could have used some editing out of their back stories unless they become more central in future books.
Spoiler:
which brings up your question. I think since most of the major characters and even minor characters came back either as alive or as virals in the first book, that it stands to reason, these characters at the end of the book will survive the attack to finish their arc in future books.

Spot on, my friend! I am at that point in the book right now and seriously considering ending this torture. I am not at all engaged with any of these (far too many) characters.
