I would highly recommend Bottomfeeder by B.H. Fingerman. It is a good modern day vampire book. The protagonist doesn't like to kill undeserving people so he only picks criminals to feed off of. Gritty and dark, but a very good read.

I'm reading the Noble Dead series by Barb and J.C. Hendee right now, and I'm absolutely loving it (2 books in). Kind of a new thing for me, since these are high fantasy vampire books, and I HATE high fantasy. And elves--loathe them, but for some reason, I love the elves in these books.

Brian Lumley's Necroscope series is are my favorite horror books of all-time. A very different spin on the vampire mythos. Very violent though.

Charlie Huston's Joe Pitt books are excellent as well.

I may have to go back and reread the first one. I was never able to get into that series and I read the first one when it first came out. I think I still have it around here somewhere.

Let the Right One In. Good movie. Better book. I think the American edition is called "Let Me In."

Something a little different, but along the lines of the vampire genre:

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.

It's a lengthy book, but totally awesome.

Whatever you do, do not, i repeat, do not read the graphic novel version... The artworks are great, but things don't connect, it's like a good looking woman and yet she can't please you.

Well, i never read the actual Anita Blake series, but got discouraged by the graphic novel... Wererats?! Huh?!

The wererats are actually pretty awesome in the story. If you thought those were strange then beware the rest of the series would really trip you out. Swanmains and Pan-weres.

Yeah, the graphic novel doesn't do the Anita Blake series justice (but i like how she looks in drawing). Hmmm, sounds like a fun read, i'll pick up from the library, thanks.

I third the recommendation for The Historian. It's one of my favorite books.

Re: Good vampire books??

Am i the only one think Sookie Stackhouse is not that great? I read the first one in the series right after the Twilight Saga. Oh boy, how similar and different those two were... I don't dig the part about the public accepting vampires at all (i know you not suppose to take it seriously, but i don't find it funny).

What kind of name is Sookie Stackhouse anyway? Are the later books any good?

I felt they were ok but I got lost between that series and the other series she was writing so I stopped reading them both. I could never keep straight which books I had read. I actually liked vampires being out in the open but didn't take it to be funny.

I planned to actually reread it but stopped since they started the TV show.

That's the thing... making vampires public (opposite to Twilight saga) opens up a whole new can of worms. The author has a lot of explanation to do and it's not very satisfying in the first book (lack of explanation to the "virus" and Bill's political trip). However, there were hints of future explanations (yeah, to make you read the next book). And the last minute revelation of Sam opens up more questions (yeah, again, read the next book). I don't know, i'm just gonna watch the show on DVD or something.

I believe the show has been very true to the book. When I watched the first season I remembered most of it from reading. There are some things I don't remember but that could just be me forgetting. I won't say what they are since they would be later in the books or if you watch the show.

There were some changes in the show that really bugged me. One in particular was
Spoiler:
Bill rather than Eric killing Longshadow. I also thought the resulting tribunal was trite and not in the spirit of the book.
The books do get better as they go on (peaking, imo at books 3, 4 and 7).

This sounds interesting. I will try reading this at some point.
