thanks! Dracula by Bram Stoker Or if you need something more modern: The Traveling Vampire Show by Richard Laymon |
Well there is the Sookie Stackhouse series that True Blood is based on. I think it's Southern Vampire Chronicles or something to that effect.

If you're into it, there's a Japanese comic called "Hellsing" -it's a finished comic (all chapters released, the comic is 10 or 11 volumes in total) and you can find translations around the web; just search for "Hellsing scanlation" or something like that.
Hellsing is about the Hellsing organization - a secret gov't agency in Great Britain that's dedicated to the extermination of vampires and other unnatural beings that would threten humanity - the twist is that their top-secret weapon is an ancient vampire named Alucard. It's got a great story line, good artwork/drawings, etc - if you're looking for vampire novels, you should at least try to download volume 1 and see if you like it |
Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton
Sonja Blue series by Nancy Collins Necroscope series by Brian Lumley |
Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons. Most of the current stuff is just romance novels pretending to be horror.
|
Salem's Lot isn't bad (Stephen King). Beware of the movie, though.
|
might want to search the forums for vampire. There are several threads recommending good authors and series depending on your taste. Definitely more than enough to get you started.
|
I remember liking They Thirst by Robert McCammon although I don't remember much since I read it long ago.
|
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, unless you wanna call it a zombie book.
|
"Fever Dream" by George RR Martin. If you're familiar with Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, then you know he's a top notch writer. This is good stuff ... a period piece Mississippi riverboat vampire story.
Kim Newman's "Anno Dracula" is another one I enjoy. It does something different with the vampire story, mixing it in with a historical alternate reality setting. |
Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite

However, I second the Traveling Vampire Show. |

One I really liked is by Christopher Golden:
Of Saints and Shadows Angel Souls and Devil Hearts Of Masques and Martyrs The Gathering Dark These 4 novels form a series. Too bad no more. Highly recommended on a different take of the vampire legend. |

 I'll second this one. Both my wife & I loved it when we read it years ago. Has some really creepy scenes. However, you should note if you're searching for it that the title is spelled "Fevre Dream". Sites such as half.com have really picky search functions that won't bring up an entry if there's even the slightest spelling error. |

The Noble Dead Series by Barb & J.C. Hendee ( www.nobledead.com )
|
I liked Hotel Transylvania and its earlier sequels by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. They're a crossover between historical romance and vampire stories, which I thought was very clever and original. I lost interest in the series when it moved too far into romance territory.
Vampire/romance is probably a whole genre to itself now. :( |
I read a lot of vampire series (Sookie Stackhouse being my favorite). The most memorable of the past couple of months have been Sunshine by Robin Mckinley and the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, which though more of a werewolf series, has vampires as well.
|
I just got Sunshine a week ago and I'm gonna have to recommend it as well.
|
Yeah I third Sunshine. Did she ever write a sequel?
|
Have to second the recommendation of Kim Newman's Anno Dracula, which also includes two further books, The Bloody Red Baron and Judgement of Tears. The series is built around the concept of Dracula essentially winning at the end of Stoker's novel and becoming Queen Victoria's consort. Vampirism becomes a way of life in England, and Newman throws in various historical and literary figures a la League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Great stuff.

Salems Lot of course (Stephen King)
I Am Legend (Richard Matheson) I also like They Thirst by Robert McCammon..cheesy title but a great book |
