Help finding a book about chess

I have a friend that read this book a long time ago and now she's looking to buy it but can't remember the name.

It's about a game of chess that the author played and for each move he makes he tells a story about his life and why he made that move, etc...

She thinks the book was called The Game of Death, but can't remember.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Was the author a noted chess player, or was it more a literary work?

Any chance this is a short story within a chess book? Irving Chernev and Fred Reinfeld have included short stories in some of their books about chess, "The Fireside Book of Chess", "Chess Companion" etc.
