Looks pretty cool to me. I read somewhere that this book will shorter than the rest.

Fok 12-14-03 11:29 PM

Has anyone read the book just released? I think part 2 and 3 have been the best so far

gusamo 12-15-03 07:04 AM

I am reading it right now and so far it has been very good so far.

bishop2knight 12-15-03 07:16 AM

I heard this entire book will be in verse, like a poem. Or rather, like a song. The song of Susannah, apparently.

I wonder what the chorus will be.

Wow - that sounds interesting.

Russ Rubman 12-15-03 08:55 AM

O.K. someone PLEASE fill me in here! I thought Wolves of the Calla was just released. How is this book even a thought yet? Is it going to be released soon?

Thanks in advance,
Russ

Song of Susannah is slated to come out June/July of next year and the seventh and final installment to follow at the end of the year.

Think Peter Jackson's LORD OF THE RING trilogy, except in book form. King pretty much wrote them all "at once" but is releasing them every six months.

Where did you hear this? I highly doubt it.

But you never know...

bishop2knight 12-15-03 05:29 PM

Yeah, I'm just kidding. Too much sugar this morning.

I'm thinking about it....and I just can't wrap my head around it. Those movies would never work as books. Sorry, I don't buy it.

Bah. only piers anthony could do it justice.

Just see what he did with the material in his novelization of Total Recall.

I just ran across a brief plot synopsis for SoS. Read at your own risk. There's only one (IMO) big spoiler, and it answers a certain question that's been asked here several times very recently. Don't forget to spoilerize any comments you may have!
Spoiler:
The penultimate volume in the Dar Tower series, Song of Susannah is a pivotal installment in the most anticipated series of publications in Stephen King's legendary career.

As Stephen King's seven-volume magnum opus draws to its electrifying conclusion, his hero, Roland Deschain, discovers the key to the quest that defines his life.

Susannah Dean, her body taken over by a demon-mother named Mia, has used the power of Black Thirteen to transport out of Calla Bryn Sturgis to New York City in the summer of 1999, so that she can give birth to her "chap". While Jake, Father Callahan, and Oy try to break Susannah's date with destiny at the Dixie Pig on Lexington and 63rd, Roland and Eddie use "the persistence of magic" to get to East Stoneham, Maine in the summer of 1977. It is a frightful world at they walk in on. For one thing, it is real, and the bullets are flying. For another, it is inhabited by the author of a novel called Salem's Lot, a writer who turns out to be as shocked by them as they are by him.

Driven by revelation and suspense on these two fronts, Song of Susannah continues the Dark Tower saga from Wolves of the Calla; its dual climaxes create a positively distressing imperative to move on to the quest's conclusion. King's legions of ardent readers will again relish the links between the Dark Tower universe and his other book's - and delight in the unfolding denouement of his magnificent serial epic.

The Antipodean 12-18-03 01:16 PM

Wow, it sounds like either that could be totally amazing or totally awful. It'll be interesting to see if King can pull it off.

drunkrob 12-19-03 09:18 AM

I just started reading this series of books during the last couple of weeks and have nearly finished book 3. I really should slow down as I don't want to have to wait along time between books. I'm not really that into the books but I guess I'm like Eddie. I don't really want to go on this ride but I want to see what all the fuss about the tower is.

Josh-da-man 04-22-04 02:04 AM

Looks like Quint over at AICN has just read the book and written the first review: http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=17401

Geofferson 04-22-04 08:43 AM

June 8th can't come fast enough!

Drop 04-22-04 11:21 AM

I have less than 70 pages left on WoC, and I'm glad I won't have to wait too long till SoS. I really dig book 5 so far. If I had to rank them:

1. Wizard and Glass
2. Drawing of the Three
3. The Gunslinger (revised edition, as it's the only one I've read)
4. Wolves of the Calla
5. The Wasteland

I think they are all excellent, no drastic preferences between them.

I hope so. I am tired of all these rabbit trails SK comes up with. Let's get to the dang Tower already!

And of course, I bet the ending will be wrapped up in 5 pages all nice and neat in typical King style.

mytzplyx 04-23-04 10:28 AM

How pissed would you be if he decided to add 6 more books to it, just to tell the story of the last hundred steps leading up to the tower, ala Robert Jordan. Good thing SK isn't like him.

Thank goodness I know he won't. I am partially happy for his "retirement". It will allow me to catch up on other books of his I haven't read (3 that I can think of). When "Dreamcatcher" came out, I saw that it was near 700 pages and I was like, not this time and didn't buy it. I always bought SK books on day of release. Course I broke down and bought the hardback for $6 when it was on sale at Waldenbooks.

I just finished WoC a few hours ago. (marathon since Christmas, reread them all). I think this is how I would rank them as well. Athough you can't forget

6. The little sisters of Eluria.

I never read this one when it came out because my mind wasn't in sync with the DT series(been so long since I was in that world). I waited until I was going to re-read them to tackle it. So I read it just before WoC a few weeks ago. Bad. I haven't read 6 or 7 yet, but this short story/novella is bad. Very bad.

FYI- LSoE has some connections to Black House (the Talisman sequel) if you've read that.

Michael Corvin 05-08-04 04:40 PM

Never did. I want to reread Talisman first.

Drop 05-08-04 05:41 PM

Haven't read LSoE, I guess I'll get to it after I finish the Stand (only 760 or so pages :)), but I'm in no hurry.

Oh, yea, I finished WotC a while ago, and that ranking still holds. I really liked it, and SoS can't get her soon enough. Thankfully I have plenty of books lined up.

JurisIL 05-10-04 02:46 AM

IMO, SK kind of wussed out Roland after the Gunslinger...

I'm kind of wondering in the long term if he'll sell 'em all down the river to get to the Tower....

BigPete 06-01-04 08:13 PM

Just a bump 'cause it's only a week away. I haven't yet decided if I want to buy the book or go for the audiobook and save it for a summer roadtrip. I'm not as happy with George Guidall as I was with Frank Muller.

auto 06-03-04 09:38 AM

MUST. GET. NEW. DARK. TOWER. BOOK.

Skywa|ker 06-04-04 12:05 PM

Just finished SoS, and I think he really pulled it off very well. Loved the book... finished it in two days, couldn't put it down. But... now I have to wait for the next one! Argh!

PalmerJoss 06-04-04 12:44 PM

Just preordered mine through Amazon. I cannot wait until next week!

Michael Corvin 06-08-04 10:25 AM

Just picked mine up at Sam's Club. $17.97. Not bad.

Geofferson 06-08-04 10:34 AM

Mine should be arriving in the mail anyday.

Michael Corvin 06-08-04 10:47 AM

Just noticed on the page that lists everything King has written, all the books that are Dark Tower related are in bold print, distinguishing them from the rest. Nice.

edit to add:

If there are any of you like me that like to know how many pages are in a book before you read... DO NOT LOOK in this book. There is a HUGE spoiler in ultra bold text and probably 18 pt. size font on the last page.

You have been warned.

silentbob007 06-08-04 11:02 PM

Wow ... a very odd, almost surreal read. It's gonna take me a while to gather my thoughts on this one.

Spoiler:
As for black 13 being stored under the World Trade Center ... mixed emotions

costanza 06-09-04 02:10 AM

the new one's already out?! i haven't even read wolves of the calla yet. i better get crackin'.

Thunderball 06-10-04 08:02 AM

I read the entire thing in one sitting. I curled up on the couch and read it.

Holy shit. Amazing read. Simply Amazing.
