Just finished it today also--what a great book! While I wish I could read the final book right now, I have waited years between some of the other installments, so I think I can make it a couple more months. This is especially true because this time I know that the final book is already done!

In an epilogue to one of the early DT books, SK wrote that he didn't know if he would live long enough to finish this tale; but now, despite a very close call with a murderous van a few years back, he has indeed completed his service to the Beam. Finality is certain. Say thankee sai! :)

Final thoughts: I liked it a lot. There was nice resonance with the rest of the series, and the Stephen King stuff worked remarkably well. I was afraid of that part coming off too cute. The only thing I didn't really enjoy was the King-style "smack you over the head" foreshadowing...

Spoiler:
...the whole death would part Eddie and Roland before the question could be answered ...

... it seemed a bit forced, though I appreciate then tension.

Yes, I hate that. King is my favorite writer, but that crap has got to stop. It was even more blatant in vol. 4 when he says
Spoiler:
"the next time he saw Susan, she was dead."

Other than that, I loved the hell out of this book. I just wish it could have been longer.

I'm listening to the audiobook - let's just say that things become much easier to buy into after a few drinks.

I've always loved the way King foreshadows. I didn't read your spoilers, but I dig they way he does it.
For example, he might tell you on the first page of a book that the MC never makes it to the end. Yet you fall in love with the character anyway and are still disappointed when it happens. I think it is his way of saying that they way it ends isn't as important as the journey it takes to get there.

Probably not a good idea to read the spoilers ... :) I don't mind the occurance of the foreshadowing ... just the placement. Too often it feels just tacked on the the end of a chapter.

Am I the only one that thinks that
Spoiler:
Roland
will be the Crimson King?

Spoiler:
Not our Roland, of course, but, a Roland from another when . It's obviously not King as I found out BEFORE I read the book because I checked to see how many pages the book had.

Now, apart from Roland, my favorite character is Odetta. That woman has got the meanest mouth. But, she speaks true.

Songs was a great book, but, just too damn short. looking forward the last one. September can't come fast enough!

JAA 06-16-04 07:20 AM

. . .September can't come fast enough!
I believe the final book isn't due until November.

I preorder it from B&N, and they had a Sept. release data listed.

My apology. You're absolutely right. The release date for the final installment is actually September 21 according to Stephen King's official site.

Just in case you haven't seen it ... the cover for the final Dark Tower book.

I'm not so sure about that cover. Roland doesn't look very rough for the journey he has been through since he was 14. Kind of .. eh.

Geofferson 06-17-04 08:38 AM

I finally started in on Song of Susannah last night - off to a great start thus far.

Furthermore, I like the cover to Dark Tower VII. Much better than VI, which IMO, is the worst cover of the series.

Samuel 06-17-04 09:32 AM

I agree about the cover of SoS, I like the German cover only slightly more:

Here's book 7:

If they weren't printed in German I'd go and buy them! :)

BTW, I didn't realize until I finished SoS but DT7 is being released on King's birthday.

very fitting.

I enjoyed it but did not catch the warning about Kings spoiler at the end of the book. I didn't care for the ending that much, not as bad as Blaine but with the foreshadowing mentioned earlier I wish he had gone another chapter or two. Looking forward to the final installment and can't wait to see how it all comes together.

The location of Black 13 also gives me mixed feelings and there are a few other things about the book that keep it from being the best in the series.
Spoiler:
I'm suprised that roland does not look more like King given the he and Roland are supposed to be nearly twins.

I didn't like Kind dying in his where, and would have prefered at least Jake/Callahan meet up with Roland by the end of the book.

As much happend in this installment I felt the plot did not move forward enough for the volume.

Despite that I could not put the book down. :D

This is the cover to the artists edition of part 6. Much cooler.http://secure.grantbooks.com/SoS-del...ront-small.jpg

Tsar Chasm 06-23-04 10:36 AM

Just finished.

Spoiler:
I thought it was kinda smarmy that King put himself in the book. A man can only have so many references to a car accident, lots of people get hit by cars Steve-o, get over it. The WTC storage was over the top. I am very glad that it wasn't in verse like a song as suggested mistakenly by James W. Powell on page one. Big "whew" on that.

It was nice to advance the story and I liked the book a lot. The animals at the Pig was very creepy. I thought the artwork was lacking this time. Bring on VII.

The Antipodean 07-06-04 12:16 AM

Gack, I thought the cliffhanger in Vol. 5 couldn't be topped, but
Spoiler:
Stephen King is dead
is a pretty decent one... Ack, c'mon, Volume 7!

Michael Corvin 07-07-04 10:25 AM

I finished it on Sunday.

Since
Spoiler:
stephen king is dead
, does that mean that they really
Spoiler:
aren't in the real world as they suspect? Just another aspect of his mind? i.e. level of the tower?

I also thought that the artwork was weak, save for the images of King and Susannah. I also felt that this was an intentional cliffhanger and could have gone on for another 100-200 pages. I enjoyed
Spoiler:
king in the story, and references to his accident. Metaphor? Death of the wordslinger and not the man himself? He has said he hasn't been the same since (writing wise).

I really enjoyed it though.

Filmmaker 07-26-04 08:33 PM

The image of the actual dark tower looks much more banal on the cover of Book VII than Michael Whelan's phantasmagoric take on it from the cover of Book I...I wonder what motivated him to alter it's appearance (Roland's vision of what the dark tower would look like versus the actual reality perhaps?)...kind of a bummer...

twikoff 07-26-04 08:41 PM
