Will J.K. Rowlings(sp?) be remembered as one of the great authors?

Most of the 'great' authors lived a hundered or more years ago. Ex/ Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Jules Vern, etc. I can't really think of any modern authors that have gained a huge following. I guess Stephen King and Tom Clancy are very famous but they don't seem to have huge news events based on their books.

The Harry Potter books have probably been some of the most popular books in decades. Order of the Phonix has set records and is still not even out. Back when Goblet of Fire was released, there were media stories and midnight sales for the book. Many kids are obsessed with reading the HP books. Most of those kids were probably not into reading before HP, let alone a huge novel. HP even has a good sized group adult readers. The kids that love the books now will probably always keep the books special to them, reading them to their kids/grandkids. This can keep generations from now into the Potter books.

Even if you don't like Harry Potter, you have to acknowledge that the books are very popular with many people. I haven't read any of her other books (if there any) so I don't know how good she is at other types of stories.

The question is, decades or even centuries, will the HP books be conidered a classic series and J.K. Rowlings be known as one of history's most famous writers?

I'd say there's a good chance of that. She's certainly one of the most famous authors today -- at least a residual amount of that popularity is bound to linger. As for it being a classic series, it has such a wide readership that I suspect it will retain a special place in the hearts of many readers, which they will pass along to their children.

As for "great" modern authors, writers like Mailer, Salinger, Pynchon, maybe Roth probably rank in the same league as Dickens or Verne.

Of course, it's difficult for any writer to achieve much mass notoriety in today's post-literate society...which makes Rowling's accomplishment all the more remarkable. Her influence on reading and publishing has been tremendous.

...I suspect it will retain a special place in the hearts of many readers...

Will she be remembered as one of the great authors? I don't know, but I doubt it.

Will she be remembered as one of the best childrens authors? Most definitly yes. I think the Harry Potter books, when done, will be right up there with the Chronicles of Narnia, Dark is Rising, Prydain, Dark Materials, etc... in terms of great fantasy childrens books.
