My favorite of Steinbeck's, and I'm a huge Steinbeck fan. Charming, witty, rich characters and a wonderful story.

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

I'm usually a sci-fi/fantasy reader, but that book completely sucked me in. Highly recommended.

The Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. Just an amazing book with so much information in it, it's staggering. Also, one of the funniest books I've ever read.

One book that I really, really like is Falling Angel by William Hjortsberg. Yup, that's where they made the movie Angel Heart from.

Okay, I can't do just one, and I'm not the only one listing seconds, so I don't feel so bad....

another book I really really like is Good Omens by Terry Pratchet and Neil Gaiman.

I got to meet and spend several minutes talking to Ms. L'Engle many years ago. It was a good day.

Literally, the first book that popped into my head when I read the thread title was:

Birdy, by William Wharton

I haven't tried that yet, but I did read The Crying of Lot 49, which I thought was a very good book to read for a college English class.

The Stand by Stephen King

I actually had great sympathy for Harold Lauder, the misunderstood betrayer, throughout the entire novel.

Kissing in Manhattan by David Schickler

Can we have a thread were people actually limit themselves to one thing? This isn't an all-time favorite book thread, it's just name ONE you really really like. The whole point is to pick one, it's supposed to be a hard choice.

It's Superman by Tom DeHaven

It takes the Superman mythos and infuses it with 40's Americana. Such a surprisingly well written book, that feels more like science fiction than a typical superhero book. If it wasn't based on a franchise, I have no doubt this book could have won all sorts of scifi book awards.

Aside from it being a helluva interesting trip through space 'n stuff, I laughed my ass off for what seemed like hours over that book!
