I just read this:
Author Douglas Adams, who wrote The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, has died suddenly aged 49.
Mr Adams died on Friday morning in Santa Barbara, California, following a heart attack, said his spokeswoman Sophie Astin.

Adams's novel was turned into a BBC series

The author became a household name when the cult science fiction novel was turned into a BBC TV series.

Adams was born in Cambridge in 1952 and educated in Essex before returning to Cambridge to study at St John's College.

His career included work as a radio and television writer and producer before his life was changed by the publication of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in 1979.

The satirical tale chronicled the journey of alien Ford Prefect and his human companion Arthur Dent throughout the universe after the destruction of Earth.

It centred around the search for an answer to life, the universe, and everything - which turned out to be 42.

The novel went on to sell more than 14 million copies worldwide and was followed by the sequels The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything and So Long and Thanks For All the Fish.

In recent years the author had been working on a Hitchhiker's Guide movie.

There was much speculation about who would play Arthur Dent, with Hugh Laurie, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carrey, Ben Affleck and even Bruce Willis said to be in the running.

Adams married Jane Belson in 1991 and had a daughter, Polly, in 1994.

Sounds like it was very sudden. I had no idea that he was ill. Shocking news!

Now the world has gone to bed.
darkness won't engulf my head.
I can see by infra-red.
How I hate the night

Now I lay me down to sleep
Try to count electric sheep
Sweet dream wishes you can keep
how I hate the night.

That's so awful, now he won't be able to work on the movie version. Rest in peace Mister Adams.

Btw, is this the year of dying young? Joey Ramone died at 49 just like Mr. Adams. I could swear there was another person who died at 49 but I forgot who.

Look, said Arthur, 'I'm a bit upset about that."
Ford frowned to himself and seemed to roll the thought around in his mind.
'Yes, I can understand that' he said at last.

This honestly has me bummed. The Guide audio drama has to be one of my favorite works of all time.

I picked it up in 1995 right after graduating high school and it was one of the most original things I had ever heard.

The voice acting and humor is one of the things that drove me to get into radio. One of my biggest influnces. In fact I did a producton tape for my Radio II class in college that utilized Adam's sense of humor, and that production tape landed me a job at my current station.

So long Douglas, you will truely be missed.

I am truly saddened by this news. The man's books, radio programs, and television work have been entertaining me for literally twenty years. He will be missed, but his work will be around for a long long time.

So long, Douglas...and thanks for all the fish.

Truly saddening...His reservation at the Restaurant shouldn't have been called until much later.

That really stinks. He was quite young, too, only 49! I recently read one of his non-fiction books, "Last Chance To See," about traveling around the world seeing endangered species, it was a fine piece of work. R.I.P., Mr. Adams...

He was one frood who really knew where his towel was. I raise my Pan-Galactic Gargle-Blaster in a heartfelt toast.

"42."

Those bumbling flightless parrots would have made great characters in a HHGTTG book, I think.

I was away for the weekend and just got in to read this horrible news. Douglas Adams' works got me through high school and taught me the pleasures of reading. I feel like crawling into bed and pulling the covers over my head.

So long, Douglas, and thanks for all the laughter.
