Ok, I realize this is hard (that's why I allowed 3):

Watership Down by Richard Adams
The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar by Roald Dahl

to name a few...

Even with 3, it's still tough, but...

1. The Stand - Stephen King. I must have read the original 3 times and The Director's Cut probably 4-5 times. I would probably read it more, but it's sooo long.

2. It - Stephen King. Another great one.

3. (Tie) The Alienist - Caleb Carr
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card(?)

Boy, I could go on and on and on. There are so many books I could go too, but those 4 are definately at the top of the list.

A couple of all time favorites of mine,

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Dune Series

I have way to many favorites in a lot of different genres. It's really to hard to name just 3.

Any particular group? I find I liked the Heritage series better than the first ones. That may be because it's been a long, long, time since I read the first group of books though.

1.) One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
All time favorite.

2.) Brave New World
Pure genius.

3.) The Great Gatsby
Work of art.

Honorable Mention:

Great.

The last three I read in high school. I like them much more now, odd

The favourite list can change based upon immediate mood, but right now:
  • The Dragon Never Sleeps -- by Glen Cook. An action-packed science-fiction epic that has deft understanding of politics, mise-en-scene techniques of writing, hard science topics with many throwaway details, and begs for a sequel. Unlike a 'Robert Jordan' book where you could eliminate half of the chapters, this book is terse and nearly every sentence is vital to the story. It is "dense" with story and has very little "air" in it and gives the book a certain "texture" when you read it.

  • The Promise of Joy -- by Allen Drury (Pulitzer-winning author). This political epic is a sequel of sorts to the Pulitzer-winning "Advise and Consent". It is much stronger on politics than it is on action whereas the Tom Clancy books are much stronger on action than they are on "intellectual" politics.

  • Gunm manga series -- by Yukito Kishiro. I prefer the Japanese version manga series to the abridged English version otherwise known as 'Battle Angel Alita'. It is shocking at how abridged the various translated manga can be. I liked how the manga sprung the true secret of Tipharean citizens.

I find it hard to choose a particular part of this series. I realize that it is actually a trilogy followed by a series of 4, and then there is the single First King Of Shannara and now The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara series has started with Isle Witch. So far I actually am liking the new series best, even though there is only the 1st book. I hate waiting for new books. The new book in the series Antrax is due out on Sept. 1st, so it is only 5 more months of waiting.

Most of you are listing fiction novels. I'm taking a different tack and picking three collections of short stories.

Burning Chrome by William Gibson
The Doors of His Face, the Lamps of His Mouth by Roger Zelazny
The Short Stories: The First Forty-Nine Stories with a Brief Preface by the Author by Ernest Hemingway

I can't believe I had to leave D.H. Lawrence off this list, among others...

From: Madison, WI ("77 square miles surrounded by reality")
The Brothers Karamazov
Atlas Shrugged
Lolita
Sometimes a Great Notion
The French Lieutenant's Woman

Had to do at least these. Many more... I haven't even gotten to the best sci-fi, horror and thrillers.
