Welp, I got it in yesterday. It looks exactly like the American steelbook except it has the usual UK markings one would expect. I got a little scared when I saw the backcover (which might have had changed my mind if I found a picture ahead of time) and it said Region B. But at that point, I figured I would stick it in one of my players anyway and give it a whirl. Much to my surprise...it is at the very least: Region A,B. All three discs play wonderfully. So for anybody who wants this set and at ~$16-$17...go get the UK import either through Amazon or Zavvi (Zavvi I think was 10.49 pounds plus shipping). So I'm happy and this looks pretty good next to my mega box set for Vol 1-10.

Hope nobody minds but the region free version of Lost Highway (David Lynch) is at 8.17 Euros at Amazon.de (I think I paid 10 euros several years ago). I have this version personally and while the picture is kinda soft, it's a pretty good Blu-ray and well worth importing. I imagine that we'll see a Criterion eventually, but that could 1...2 years down the road. I will note that there are German Subtitles but they are removable. (No English ones, sorry).

This is a good set, but most of the special features have been removed. If you just want the films, it is a fine deal. From what I recall, Shane lost a commentary and El Dorado losses everything.

There is also a Hepburn set with Breakfast, Sabrina, My Fair Lady, and Funny Face that goes for cheap. Sabrina losses all special features (as does Funny Face I think) and the second disc isn't included for My Fair Lady.

I don't believe "My Fair Lady" restored version ever came with the second disk in Europe that the USA release got. I remember reading complaints about this in Amazon UK reviews, I believe. I am guessing these multi disk sets are releasing what was released in Europe originally as single discs. The "missing features" are only available on the US releases of these films. I am sure I will be corrected if I am mistaken.

I think it varies mostly dependent on if the studio has worldwide rights to a film. I am sure there are exceptions where a film is region B locked even though the studio has worldwide rights to a film."Lawrence of Arabia" was released region free in Europe. "The Graduate" is most likely Region B locked because Universal does not have the US rights to the film. "The Godfather" and "Breakfast At Tiffany's" are Region Free. Cast Away was released by Fox in the states so that is probably Region B locked. The names of the films on the packaging is in Italian but the original English soundtrack is on the discs.

I think your right, but I wanted to warn people to whom features are important that these discs are missing some found on the US releases. It is odd about My Fair Lady not getting a multidisc release outside the US.

Studios often don't have full legal rights to all special features because international rights weren't in the participants' contract when they made the special features. Everyone should remember that most Hollywood employees are in some sort of trade union with rules about these sort of things.

Amazon UK has Universal Classic Monsters - The Essential Collection on Region-free Blu-ray (8 discs) for £10 currently. With shipping to the US it came out to be under $16 for me, or under $2 per Blu-ray. This set has loads of bonus features including the first ever 3D release of "Creature from the Black Lagoon".

Yes, great price indeed! I hope you're right about the arrival time, although mine shows as shipping in 1-3 weeks with a final delivery day of Nov. 3. Hopefully it's just their typical overestimation.
