Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
Our deals up here rarely equal the ones that can be found in the U.S. — and yes, I'm aware that a lot of the stuff in this first post was cheaper during the Black Friday sales — but for those who aren't near the border, hopefully a thread like this might be helpful on an ongoing basis, and despite previous attempts. Figured it would be a good excuse to list some of the Boxing Day sale items that are showing up in the flyers today, for starters:

Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
The Rogers Video outlets in the Vancouver area (across Canada?) are closing in the next few days.
The stores are blowing out all of their Blu-rays and DVDs for a buck each! |
Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
I thought in Canada they are called Blu-R-ehs ...

Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
Is there a list of stores closing anywhere?

Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
Some decent 4/$20 Blu-rays at HMV right now (plus a few same-olds), for those with access. Mostly Alliance/Maple stuff. Single price is $7.99, but any amount over 4 and the price is still $5.00 ea.

Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
One of the more pathetic developments in Canadian retail in recent years has been the piggybacking on America's Black Friday sales. Even though "bargains" up here virtually never equal the savings enjoyed by our Southern neighbours (one big reason I keep a U.S. postbox, and easy cross-border access), the trend has become entrenched over the past five years or so, as the Canadian retail lobby and its media pals try to invent new ways to talk Canadian shoppers (most of whom live within an hour or two of the border) from crossing over for real savings. "Think of the gas and wear n' tear on your car," they'll say. "Better watch out, the warranties on those electronics you're buying aren't valid in Canada," they'll warn the tiny minority that might actually need them. "Look! Those shoes are only $10.00 more in Canada", they'll tout, floating the ludicrous idea that Canadians who cross-border shop only do so to buy one item at a time. It remains to be seen if this year's Fake Black Friday deals are any more worth staying home for — or staying off the American websites for — than last year's, but Amazon.ca, not surprisingly, does have some decent deals by Canadian standards (though certainly fewer new releases than in the states, naturally):
LORD OF THE RINGS - EXTENDED (Box Set) - $33.99 http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B004HEWNBO/ TITANIC 3D Combo - $20.99 (can't touch the U.S. price, but not bad for up here) http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B007UPWIYY/ PROMETHEUS 3D Combo - $19.99 http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B008R9GZTQ/ MAN WITH NO NAME TRILOGY - $14.49 http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B003FTM1EQ/ ROBOCOP TRILOGY - $14.49 http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B003Z6YMCS/ CABIN IN THE WOODS - $13.49 http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B008POPRII/ BRIDESMAIDS Combo - $11.99 http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B005DK75BY/ MAD MEN SEASON 5 - $21.99 (cheaper than the U.S. price, but I'm betting that will change soon enough  ) http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B008Y4924Y/ BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Complete Series - $113.99 http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0036EH3U2/ More here, for what it's worth: http://www.amazon.ca/s/ref=amb_link_...rd_i=345144011 |
Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
At least you Canuckians still have Hostess products, unlike here in the Colonies where the union killed the company.
|
Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
"Cabin in the Woods" is $7.99 at Amazon.com
If you buy another title and keep the total under $20, it comes out cheaper than at Amazon.ca |

Come to think of it, I haven't actually had a Twinkie since childhood. I never knew how much of an institution they were over there until now.

The LOTR set up here is identical to the U.S. version. Alliance doesn't have the best track record on certain older Blu-rays, but its balanced by their decent stuff, which often goes on sale up here sooner than the U.S versions. Not sure I'd write them off entirely . . . |

Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
The Scream Collection with Scream 1-4 and the docs is available for $18.99. Great set that includes all the movies, which is unlikely in the US.
http://www.amazon.ca/The-Complete-Sc.../dp/B006DVB6C6 Wish there was a deal on the [REC]/[REC]2 two-pack to go with it. Also the Luc Besson Adele adventure flick is at a great price. Unlikely to arrive in the US soon. English subs are included, but the special features are largely in French only. Les aventures extraordinaires d'Adle Blanc-Sec - $9.99 http://www.amazon.ca/aventures-extra.../dp/B005CU5OAE |

^ There is a [rec]/[rec]2 two-pack http://www.amazon.ca/Rec-Double-Feat.../dp/B0050N0V74
Not as cheap, per movie, as the Scream set, but still a good discount compared to amazon.com. |
Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
Future Shop and Best Buy both currently have the Universal 100th Anniversary Collection on Blu-ray for $89.95.
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/produ.../m2200925.aspx Looks like it's in-store only, at this point. Sold out online. That's 25 movies, consisting of: All Quiet on the Western Front, Dracula (1931), Dracula (1931) Spanish Version, Buck Privates, Pillow Talk, Spartacus, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Birds, American Graffiti, The Sting, Jaws, National Lampoon’s Animal House, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Scarface (1983), The Breakfast Club, Back to the Future, Out of Africa, Field of Dreams, Do the Right Thing, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List (DVD only), Apollo 13, The Fast and the Furious, The Bourne Identity, Mamma Mia!, Despicable Me 26 discs Collectible digibook with slip case Exclusive “100 Years of Universal” book 72-page book chronicling the history of Universal over the last 100 years including rare photos and memorabilia from the vaults Strange that Schindler's List apparently is only included in the DVD set. Strike that... I guess it's because they haven't released it on BD yet. |

Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
Some great prices, most of which are useless to anyone living in the States. Shipping is exorbitant between the two countries now.
|
Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
I had Star Trek in my cart in order to watch the price, so I was surprised to see it listed here for $91.50 since I hadn't been notified of a price change when viewing my cart. Checked my cart, and I'd accidentally added the DVD version.
So glad you posted this, as it's a great price. Thanks! |

Regarding the shipping costs, true enough that shipping either direction via Amazon itself is prohibitive, but some Marketplace sellers on the Canadian site are actually U.S.-based regulars from the American site like ImportCDs, MovieMars, etc., and occasionally their pricing up here is better than it is down there, even with the standard $3.49 CDN shipping fee, and in spite of crossing the border. I've order a few "New" items from U.S. sellers this way (despite having a U.S. postal box), and have generally received decent product in decent time, although there is an increased risk of floaters when you involve two postal carriers and various customs personnel bouncing your parcels around. Frankly, it's about damned time our Amazon started offering some decent discounts in light of how frequently the deals pop up at the U.S. and European sites. It'd be nice if they did this a little more often, though. |
