There's a disheartening comment posted to one review suggesting that the blu-ray HD "mastering" for this documentary was accomplished by projecting the old war films onto a screen, then capturing the screen image with a Red digital videocam. Incredibly cheesy and cheapskate if true. Interesting the editorial reviewer says nothing about that. Crazy rumor?
Here's one of the special features posted on Youtube (by History Channel UK), which has the following comment:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5Cxg3iRF84
Thanks for your comments, youre absolutely right the show was not originally shot in HD. However, utilising a revolutionary new RED ONE digital camera paired with a telecine machine and a fantastic team we have been able to transfer the original 35MM film into a full HD quality show. We have uploaded another video "WWII Lost Films - Preserving the Footage" which further explains this process.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u8CUHAuzQ0
That video shows that they are projecting to a screen and shooting it on a RED ONE, at 4K. Going by the procedure in the video, it looks like they'd get the color reels from the archives, clean and project/shoot the whole thing, then use a downconverted version for editing.
Considering that the first video mentions that they found 2000 hours of color footage, if they actually captured all 2000 hours in 4K before they started editing (which it sounds like they did), I can see why they went with the "cheapskate" route. I suppose once they had edited down the footage down to the bits they wanted, they could've gone back and transferred just that footage via a film scanner, but they probably didn't have the time/money for that kind of redundancy (they figured the RED capture looked good enough).

Thanks to Jay G. for the authoritative answer re/ the HD mastering on WWII in HD.
Wondering if there was never any intent to do a blu-ray release in the first place, but later they decided they could get away with one, so to speak...

Amazon seems to be matching the Best Buy prices a few at a time. By the time they match some of them, they've probably lost sales to BB, at the same prices. Seems weird to me, but whatever.
Since last night, here's what I've gotten from them. They finally got me on The Sound of Music; I paired it with another title to use the FB promo:
Hatfields and McCoys $9.99
Shameless Season 1 $23.49
The Sound of Music $19.99
The Caine Mutiny $4.99 (used $5 off $25 promo; purchased with TSOM)
Van Morrison--Born to Sing: No Plan B (CD) $6.99
I'm aware there is a $4.99 lightning deal on the Van Morrison tomorrow, but I will be at a funeral during that time and not able to access the site.

Unfortunately, this is the "movie-only" version without the Maximum Movie Mode feature. I was wondering if this was what was going to happen after getting burned by a stripped-down Harry Potter 8 BD for $10 last year. Glad I was able to see the back of the box this time.

What were the Mad Men blu rays at Best Buy last BF? $7.99, $9.99, or $11.99 each? I passed then but I'm considering taking the plunge now.
Also, have they announced how many seasons there will be?

looking at the features on the SH BD. It's barely worth it. The features aren't enough to get it right now for $9.99. If it was like....$7.99. That'd be be good. BF makes you look at things a bit more critically at times, in my case.

Kinda leaning this way myself. These "Movie Mode" things aren't my cup of tea for presenting supplements, and the $3.99 "Movie Only" Blu-ray of SHERLOCK 2 actually does come with three of the "Focus Points" from the higher-priced version (all the supplements for this one seem a bit on the fluffy side, really). Ultraviolet is hardly a bonus, either; I never use the damned things.
