The Disney titles were mixed in as well. Nice classic movies on DVD like Cimmarron, Man from Laramie, Jack Lemmon collection, Warners Bogey titles and others. While am not thrilled at paying $5 per title, I did make an exception and picked up the following:

DVD:

Saving Mr.Wu (a Well Go Asian action flick) - $3
The Missing (Extended Cut edition - Tommy Lee Jones, Cate Blanchett) - $3 (what a pity this isn't on BD yet)

BD:
The Raven (John Cusack) - $3
Aloha - $5
Moneyball - 3 Disc Walmart Exclusive edition - $5
Hitman (with UV) - $5

No classic at the store I was at today or yesterday.

I had a unique & unpleasant experience today at the BL on 72nd in Tacoma, WA.

Yesterday, I purchased "Across the Universe Blu-ray/DVD Combo for $3 - coupon.

Took it home, opened it & it was missing the blu. I returned it today with all packaging & a receipt & requested an exchange. The clerk said she had to get manager's approval because I might have stolen the disc (her words). The manager did approve it it with no hassle; but I found this quite insulting. I opened the other one in the store & it did have both discs.

I hope BL management reads this. Not a good way to treat a regular customer of many years.

While it does feel that way, try to look at it from their side as well - agree that the choice of words weren't apt, BL store personnel aren't exactly groomed in the art of speak. Imagine if your eBay customer claimed the same - that the disc was missing, what would be your gut reaction ? A similar thing happened in Barnes and Noble a couple of years ago when a seemingly well mannered/spoken young man at the register said the same to me. Spontaneity 'demanded' that I feel enraged and insulted but nothing's gained by it. I spoke to a Manager, she was apologetic and I mentioned to her that choice of words are important if you need returning customers. Glad that at the end, it worked out for you. In your case, you could have contacted Sony directly - their customer service is much better than any other studio's.

On a related note, back in May, I purchased 'Breakfast Club' from Frys on a weekend sale. As is the norm with many of us, I didn't around to viewing it until a month later. When I opened the shrinkwrap and the case, there was no disc inside, just the UV code sheet. I immediately called Universal - mistake as no one receives a call, its just a call box for leaving messages. I wrote Universal, a few days later they sent me a response asking me to direct the question to another email they provided and that I would receive a replacement copy. I have not heard back to date, despite a couple of reminders. Reached out to Frys but they don't have this in stock no more.

I own 127 HOURS and ONE HOUR PHOTO on dvd, good flicks. OUT OF THE FURNACE is a good drama, no extras really on the disc though.

Visited the local BL today and noticed the odd new disk but not the cornucopia others are describing and it's getting depressing. They get maybe one out of three new finds listed here, but rarely the ones I'm desiring. And as I visit a few BL stores, this doesn't seem to be a case of a reseller plucking them dry. Stores in the next county still have copies of the Target Fantastic Four BD digibook...which for curiosity value I'd think would be first to go...but little else that's exciting.

I did buy a copy of "Thank You for Smoking" on DVD for $3, which I think was new.

I didn't say it was going to change your life. From what I remember it was like a Satanic version of Dark Shadows.

I saw the new batch today. Only blu I even found memorable was Moneyball 3 disc (1 br 2 DVD) for $5.
Their were several more new ones I've never heard of

Laidback,

I got a copy of one of those Rob Roy's today @ Big Lots. Did yours have a digital copy inside? Just curious before I open mine. I forgot I own it already, but I'll keep it if yours had a DC.

Thank you, I appreciate that. I'll check my copy at home to make sure my original copy isn't somehow beat up 5 ways to sunday and then return my BL copy (if anybody is looking for it, I'll probably won't return it before Friday). Oh wells...its just the kinda week I'm having.

I've never seen the film, but made a few trips out of town recently and noticed two or three copies at other BL stores, but passed because there weren't any extras and figured it was a Redbox (etc.) variant. Just realized that Fox went cheap on this one...not even a trailer. Per everybody's recommendation, will look for it again the next time I'm driving.

Am I right in thinking there will be another Friends & Family sale in the next few weeks?

Re: Big Lots Blu-rays

Family & Friends 20% sale this weekend.

Stopped in my store tonight to see if it was worth stopping by tomorrow. There were quite a few new to me BDs priced at $5.

There was a version of the '90s Dracula (like the one pictured here: https://smile.amazon.com/Stokers-Dra...ula+blu+ray+4k) that I had never seen. Also a 3-disc Moneyball and a double feature of Hotel Transylvania/Monster House.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll be there. Think I'll grab the Garbo and Carol Lombard sets and the Will Rogers set on DVD, which I'd passed on last time. A shame we don't have a better selection of Blu-Rays locally, but hope springs eternal.

MooMooMooMoo 09-29-17 07:18 PM

Re: Big Lots Blu-rays

Here, those sets disappeared weeks ago, unless they've restocked this week.

thetao 09-29-17 08:22 PM

The BL store I'm thinking of doesn't get lots of foot traffic. Those sets were still available as of last weekend, but I'm not expecting anything more.

Might have to finally pick up Ice Age 2, the only one I don't have in hi-def (the regular DVD looks like ass.)

Re: Big Lots Blu-rays

Had a good afternoon. I managed to grab everything mentioned above, plus a Super Friends: Legendary Super Powers Show DVD set...mostly because it was $4 with the discount.

Then decided to drive on to the Hanover store, which I hadn't visited in years. They were actually even more picked-over than my local store, but I did find the Bram Stoker's Dracula Supreme Cinema Series BD that Cardsfan mentioned above. I'd never seen anything like it before either:

The front and back of the digbook are lucite-like, but the disk is still housed in a cardboard sleeve. Not very practical, but it looks cool.

Otherwise it was the same old stock...although Hanover still has over half the "King of Queens" series if anybody's local and interested.

Wow, that's a good find. Nothing new in the 4 SoCal stores near me - someone, please buy those Disney stuff and end it already

found The Bourne Ultimatum, The Exorcist (extended version) (BD) and Ford at Fox - 2 silents (DVD) in addition to the Dracula Supreme Series. All pleasant surprises.

Everything else was same-o same-o. And those $10 used films are just insane....

awesome. Hopefully they'll make it to the west coast sometime. Of course, past the promotion date. Checked 2 more SoCal stores - same old, same old. Saw a lot of James Bond DVDs been dumped

MooMooMooMoo 10-01-17 01:03 AM

How much are the Ford at Fox? Is it the box or single discs?

cinemaman 10-01-17 07:41 AM

sorry - should have been clearer. It was a single DVD with 2 movies.. for $2.40. It was the only Ford at Fox I saw.

Re: Big Lots Blu-rays

I hit the Pearl Street superstore at about 3 PM. They were either pretty picked out, or they may have just not gotten much for awhile.

Their were a number of titles new to me at BL, but most were not familiar to me or were junk.

I bought the Moneyball 3 pack & a Rum Diaries DVD.

BobO'Link 10-01-17 09:35 PM

Re: Big Lots Blu-rays

I didn't even bother to go in this weekend. That's a first as I've hit every 20% off sale since the store here opened.

The last time I checked the media section there was nothing but old, very picked over, stock. I think I've purchased 6 titles from BL this year. I used to purchase that many, or more, every week.

Re: Big Lots Blu-rays

I know we've had discussions in the past about the random frequency of Big Lots coupons. I'd say I've usually received one every other month on average. However, I got one today. And that makes 3 in the last month. Anyone else seeing an increase?

PhantomStranger 10-19-17 01:10 PM

Re: Big Lots Blu-rays

I just received the first $5 off $15 I've ever gotten after years of regular coupons. Once their DVD section started filling with junk, I stopped regularly going to Big Lots at all. I haven't been in one in six months.

BobO'Link 10-19-17 02:05 PM

Re: Big Lots Blu-rays

I got a $5 off $15 today as well. That's the first in 4-8 weeks for me (don't know for sure - lost track). Before the last F&F 20% off I was getting a $5 off $20 about every 2-3 weeks with some months seeing one every week. The last one before today was 2 weeks before the last F&F event and none since. I also passed on that F&F - first one ever I didn't at least buy some snacks.

MooMooMooMoo 10-20-17 12:11 AM

I got 1 also.

soundman2 10-24-17 09:16 AM

Picked up the following for $3 each. [All of them except Runaway Jury are BD + DVD]

Runaway Jury
Safe Haven
The Vow
The Karate Kid
The Roommate

Plus used $5 off $15 - So $10 + tax for all Five ( thank you PhantomStranger for the coupon alert - Get too many junk mail - so did a search and found the coupon)

Hit the Superstore today. Not only no new media; but several of the grocery shelves were 100% empty. I don't think BL know what to do with a "superstore"!

Big Lots is one of the worst companies spamming their sales. I don't need to be reminded five times a week about their mattress sale.

Re: Big Lots Blu-rays

Stopped by a store today and in addition to the normal 4 sided BD/DVD/CD rack, there was a Christmas DVD display on the end of an aisle of Halloween decorations. The only BDs were the Ice Age Christmas film and Christmas in Connecticut. Both were $5.

I got the Ice Age Christmas special in 3D for about that much- it's ridiculously short, only for Ice Age and/or 3D completists (if it's the non-3D edition, forget it!)

I didn't look too closely. But yes, not the best bang for your buck.

Cardsfan111 11-01-17 11:27 AM

Re: Big Lots Blu-rays

This is significant news if you frequent Big Lots. After years of wondering the rhyme and reason they use to send out coupons, I had a cashier tell me as I left the store yesterday that the Buzz Club was changing. Starting November 1st (today), customers would receive a $5 coupon after every 3 purchases.

No particulars given, so I don't know if the purchases need to be a minimum amount or if the $5 coupon is off of $15, $20 or some other amount.
