I would imagine the ones with the PA3 coupon were the ones that were officially re released on October 4th from Paramount, hence why they have a different SKU number.

Is the coupon.com coupon for Mimic still available?

yep. Along with Transformers: DotM and Monte Carlo coupons.

btw, the Mimic coupon is good for The Crow, Mimic or The Others. Just have to print multiples to use it more than once.

Yes, just look in the "home entertainment" section of the site. It's good for The Others and The Crow as well. I picked up The Crow at WalMart for $7.XX after coupon.

Re: Best Buy Trade And Save - Oct. 9 - Oct. 29th

Today I traded in 2 more DVDs at BB (since I was next door at Target). Then I found out they didn't have the other title I want and there are only a few days left, so I thought... maybe I'll upgrade Donnie Darko even though I had read it wasn't that great of an upgrade. I tried the 4 disc edition and of course they wouldn't let me get that one with the trade & save coupon. As I was running out of time before I had to get to work for a meeting (which ended up being canceled after I hurried to get there) I grabbed the 1 disc Donnie Darko BD and completely forgot to try to use the $3 off mfg. coupon I had in my wallet because I was in a hurry because they were so slow and the line was long (due to good old Battlefield 3 which I must've been the only person who wasn't buying it).

Now if it were Target I know I could go back in and they'd apply the $3 coupon after the fact, but at BB I expect they won't allow it as they are usually pretty bad dealing with any coupons at my store. That's where I always run into trouble. So I'm thinking I'll try to find something else to exchange Donnie Darko. Has anyone else returned one of these trade & save BDs and exchanged it for something else and if so, did they allow you to keep your $5 trade & save credit?

good to know about the coupon for 'Mimic' and 'The Crow'. I've picked up and out down 'The Crow' so many times the last week or so.

Next trip to WalMart and I'll pick it up. If 'Mimic' is $10, I'll grab that too but I can't remember.

How can you say that when you forgot to use the second coupon? It's not like they denied you.

True technically. I was just speculating, but I decided to edit my post to make it more correct. At the time I wrote it I was bummed out.

Went a little overboard with this, but I think I'm done unless anyone has any strong recommendations.
Ended up with the following (all prices before tax, rounded up to a whole and bb denotes a blind buy - good ones I hope) -

Donnie Darko (4-disc) - $1
Straw Dogs, Big, Hot Tub Time Machine (2-disc), True Grit (2-disc), Ferris Bueller and Old School - $5 each
Boondock Saints (2-disc), Dawn of the Dead (2-disc (or 3?) combo), Rambo and Halloween - All bb and $5 each
Mimic - $7 and a bb
Pulp Fiction - $10

I also considered Jackie Brown, but think it might get lower in the future since it sells for $10 at WM. Would've gotten Forrest Gump for $5 (plenty of copies with $10 sticker), but got it for $15 at WM more than 90 days ago and I'm not sure it would be worth returning without a receipt to get whatever price they got it at now. Others like Cast Away I already got for the same or lower price, or I (think) have no interest in getting.

So any bad buys or any I missed?

sotra, your list looks decent. I think it comes down to this... were those your first time buys of these movies or were you upgrading DVDs to BDs?

If the former, definitely good deals. If it's the latter, as most of those titles would be for me, I question whether most stuff is worth upgrading at $5 especially after a DVD trade-in (which is usually worth $1 of credit at FYE). It turns out after getting Donnie Darko (and then exchanging it for something else) I already had the 2-disc DVD set, and the 4 disc set (which my BB wouldn't allow me to get with the coupon) just adds a BD copy of the movie with a transfer that has been described as only slightly better than the DVD. I'm bummed I bought True Grit (2010) when it was $9.99 before they had the $5 deal. I think I gave up watching Mimic about 20 minutes into it... I don't remember why. It was a movie about cockroaches I think. Hot Tub Time Machine I sadly picked up the stripped down rental version at Blockbuster for $4 and haven't even watched it yet. I would've rather waited for a full new version for $1 more... if only my crystal ball worked. Straw Dogs didn't sound pleasant due to the subject matter (it was compared to a Clockwork Orange which I despised, though I did like The Accused).

I know that I'm out of stuff to get there that interests me at $5 (and nothing interests me at $10 or higher). I did 4 or 5 trade-ins. Hopefully in the future they will add some new $5 AC BDs rather than keep the same old same old (such as Fry's Electronics does with their advertised $6-$8 BDs).

Does anyone know what Best Buy will do with all the old DVDs people have traded in?
Will they have a used section like they have for video games?

Maybe they are repackaged & sold to big lots.

Gah! I forgot yesterday was the last day :(

Pulp Fiction is @ $11.99 this week but I had some DVDs I wanted to unload.

Hopefully it comes back at some point. Got rid of several hd-dvds that I'm not sure what I'd do with otherwise.

Did I totally miss this? Do all BBs really accept HD-DVDs for the BD trade & save program (or is it another YMMV)? Did you return them in the normal HD-DVD cases or DVD cases? Somehow I'm guessing that it was just an employee who didn't realize they were HD-DVDs. Otherwise (if I had tried it) I would've expected them to say no.

Even though it's over now, it would be helpful to know for future trade-ins since I have some HD-DVDs which I'll probably never be able to get any money for.

I imagine it depends on the store and could be a YMMV, but on 3 different trips, I took in 5 hd-dvds.' Original red case, etc. No questions, on 2 of the trips they opened the case just to make sure a disc was inside- they were pretty much just tossing the trade-ins in a big Tupperware. There seemed to be very little communication among staff as to how the promotion worked and was applied.

I can usually score crap DVD's for a buck or less each. Are your HD discs worth less than that?

Can't understand why anyone would trade in their HD-DVDs especially since, quality-wise, you gain almost nothing video-wise, maybe a little audio-wise in buying its Blu-ray equivalent. Nowadays, I'm perfectly happy keeping my HD-DVDs and won't buy the Blu-ray unless they put out a new superior edition that's either remastered or comes with way more extras. I would gladly trade in my crappier DVDs than touching my HD-DVDs any day.

with you on this. Although the earliest titles used questionable HD encoding, it was true of the BD camp as well. But I believe some titles, e.g King Kong (Peter Jackson) came out with a longer cut on BD (correct me if I am wrong)...but I am happy with my Planet Earth HD-DVD ($8 on wherehousedeals when HD-DVD tanked) and a host of others that look stellar on my Toshiba HD-A3 that's going strong to the day (except for startup times during which time I can finish breakfast)

I would guess that the person in question either never had a HD-DVD player to begin with, or maybe did, but it died and now they have nothing to play them on. I personally waited until the format war was over, so I never bought a player, but if I got a good deal on the the discs, I might grab them on an impulse.

Yep, the Blu-ray edition of King Kong (Peter Jackson) has both the 187 minute and 200 minute versions of the movie whereas the HD-DVD only has the 187 minute version. I'm still waiting for a better version to make its way out on Blu-ray to include all the extras on the DVD versions. I understand how studios go through the cycle of getting people to buy movies over and over again but I try not to fall for this whenever I see "incomplete" HD versions that are missing things already found on DVD since I know a definitive edition would eventually appear. Unless I absolutely love the movie, I can wait.
