Re: amazon uk deals

They just copied and pasted the PAL 4% sped up run time from the DVD specs.. Discs should be identical to the US release.

Goonies is 7.99 British Pounds. With S&H, came out to around $14 USD. Since we are getting hosed with an expensive UCE, this is a great alternative.

Good price, but FWIW there are no subtitles on this disc. Just a warning for anyone who'd need them. I know I would.

Scans of the discs show them to be identical.. No worries.

Re: amazon uk deals

Hmmm...I was going to order Life (Attenborough version), but it won't play more than the BBC intro on my US PS3 (borrowed from a mate who bought it at Amazon UK and said it plays fine on his standalone US BD player). Anyone else got this and tried it on PS3? The screen just goes black after the intro and I tried bringing up menu and it does nothing. All discs do the same. Might have to go with the shittier US packaging (UK one doesn't have the discs housed on top of each other).

The UK import of Life will not play on any American PS3, which does not handle the video format, 1080i @ 50 Hz, which the UK Blu-ray contains. The release is region-free, and some standalone American players (computers will have zero problems) can play it because they handle that video format.

Thanks for the info. I assumed it would work since my Planet Earth set plays fine. Good thing I checked and you confirmed. Any way of finding out which standalone cheap/good players would be able to play UK version of Life?

Re: amazon uk deals

Harry Potter Years 1-6 -- £31.16 shipped after VAT, which comes out to around $46. Keep in mind that the Blu-rays come in three wide double-disc cases, instead of six individual ones. At least it saves space.

Is the UK Gladiator transfer as bad as the US version?

Someone can feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but I believe they are the same transfer.

Yep, same transfer. Universal was the one who produced the Blu-ray Discs for themselves and Paramount US/Canada. Doesn't matter which Gladiator you buy: US, Canadian, UK, France, German, Australian, Hong Kong, Korean, Japan, etc., it's the exact same transfer.

I just placed my order for the Dirty Harry 5 disc set (found the link @ Slickdeals). http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002MZ1UQE/

I got it shipped for slightly over $26.00!!! That's my sweet spot $5 per Blu... I'll order all day long.

Yes, the Dirty Harry set from the UK plays fine on American players. The BDs are identical to the U.S. discs.

Hmmm. I've been led to belive that the UK Bluray release of Torchwood was in the original 50hz format. For it to play on your PS3, that might suggest that it was (shudder) converted to 60hz (like "Doctor Who: The Specials"). Anybody here know for sure if the UK release is 50 or 60hz?

You can use this site to find info on which UK discs are region-free, as well as whether their 50i or not.
http://bluray.liesinc.net/index.php?region=b

According to that list, the UK Torchwood Series 1 BD is 50i
