With the right actress, yes. However, although I've only seen her in The Wolf of Wall Street (never watched her short-lived series, Pan Am), Margot Robbie doesn't seem to have the acting chops to flip-flop like that in a believable way. She just came across as a generic hotty in that flick. It's the equivalent of hiring a cosplayer because she looks the part.
Hopefully, I am dead wrong and she knocks it out of the park.

Check out Batman: Assault on Arkham. It's dark as hell (and plenty violent) yet her perkiness never felt out of place.

Jared Leto On His Rumored 'Suicide Squad' Joker Role
8:41 AM PST 11/20/2014 by Graeme McMillan
Jared Leto has addressed reports that he’ll play the Joker in David Ayer’s adaptation of the DC Entertainment property Suicide Squad… by avoiding the question of whether or not the rumors are true altogether.
Talking to MTV News, Leto said “You know there's a film called Fight Club, my friends, and you know what the first rule is, don't you?” (For those who don’t remember the 1999 movie, that’d be the rule about not talking about Fight Club. To be fair, that’s also the second rule, so you could be excused for being confused.) “Nuff said,” Leto added, staring directly into the camera.
Speaking more broadly, the actor said that he has been reading scripts and weighing up a return to acting after spending time with his band Thirty Seconds to Mars. “There was this little event called the Oscars that basically changed my life,” he said (Leto won Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Dallas Buyers Club back in March). “I’m not really in a hurry to jump into another film unless it’s something I can’t say no to. I want to make sure it’s special.”
As special as playing one of the most iconic comic book villains ever created, for example? Of course, it’s possible there’s a rule that stops you talking about that. Suicide Squad is scheduled for release in 2016.

Here's a more polished and detailed look at that Harley Quinn pic I posted earlier. I'm not saying it isn't dark, because it is. Personally, I'd love to see this incarnation of the character merged with her trademark wit and insanity. I believe they can coexist with this look.

‘Suicide Squad’ Cast Revealed: Jared Leto to Play the Joker, Will Smith is Deadshot
http://variety.com/2014/film/news/su...ot-1201368867/
Jared, Leto, Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne will make up the all-star cast in Warner Bros.’ super villain tentpole “Suicide Squad,” it was announced on Tuesday.
Based on the DC comic book, the story centers on the team of super villains who are given a chance at redemption by the government. The catch: Their mission will probably kill them all.
The actors names had long-been rumored for the high-profile movie, which opens Aug. 5, 2016, but their deals and characters weren’t finalized.
Here’s the official cast/character list:
Jared Leto – The Joker
Will Smith – Deadshot
Tom Hardy – Rick Flagg
Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn
Jai Courtney – Boomerang
Cara Delevinge – Enchantress
“Suicide Squad,” directed by David Ayer and produced by Charles Roven, will begin shooting next April in Toronto.
According to insiders, Jesse Eisenberg is also in talks to play Lex Luthor in the film, a role he will first play in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” though the status of his deal is unknown.
“The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one,” WB President Greg Silverman said in a statement. “We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under David Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”
Warners has always viewed this project as its “Oceans Eleven” to comic book movies and always wanted to load the roster up with top tier talent that compares to the ‘Ocean Eleven’ movies.
Warners still has the role of Amanda Waller, the character who oversees the team similar to Nick Fury in the Marvel universe, to cast before the film goes into production. The studio’s short list of actresses being eyed for the role includes Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey, whom sources say would be WB’s first choice for the part.

Oprah? Well that'd be casting the unexpected.
Pretty interesting to see Smith as Deadshot. That can actually be pretty damn exciting actually.

I don't think that she'd ever be cast.
Though it would be awesome.

So the new 52 has a young Waller like in Arrow, but they go back to the old one? Huh?

Leto as the Joker is intriguing. Curious how Will Smith will work in the ensemble cast too. I still don't think this is a good idea for WB/DC at the moment, but the cast isn't too bad. Really curious what direction they go with the costumes and tone of the movie.

Not a fan of that cast list at all really. Leto as The Joker doesn't do it for me. Granted I understand that no one thought Heath Ledger would be good but I dunno. Also have never been a big fan of Will Smith so his casting does nothing for me and I'm surprised Tom Hardy is playing another villain in a DC film.

Hardy probably has no allegiances to anything when it comes to a role. If it sounds good for him, he takes it. The guy likes to do interesting stuff.

Do it the way Marvel did with GoTG. I can't understand why Warner would go in the opposite direction of a proven formula.
The actor who plays Floki on the Viking series would have been my choice to play the Joker.

I still don't get the logic in having the Suicide Squad film as the first follow up film to Batman V. Superman in the first place.

Yeah, lame casting. If Warner was smart they would hire a bunch of nobodies and make a shitload of money if it's a hit. Instead they're going to pour a shitload of cash just for the actors for a comic that nobody outside of comic readers has ever heard of. The comic version of the Suicide Squad wasn't that good to begin with.

Suicide Squad only has Will Smith and Jared Leto (who most certainly signed a multi-picture deal, one presumably a solo Batman movie) as the known commodity. For the general audience, could anyone place Tom Hardy, Jai Courtney or Margot Robbie? And they certainly don't know who Cara Delevinge is (I don't know who she is).
