Terrible idea but I have yet to see a good McG movie.

McG ("Charlie's Angels," "Terminator Salvation") is after box-office megastar Will Smith to play Captain Nemo in his just-announced "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" prequel for Disney Pictures says Latino Review.
"The character Nemo in this film is more about obsession, he is obsessed and people tend to forget that when you become so obsessed you end up being the villain. I'm trying to get Will Smith to do it, been trying to get a hold of him. I've been wanting to work with him for a long time already. That guy's great" says McG.
The film is an origin story of Nemo as he creates his warship, the Nautilus, and will setup the scenario of Jules Verne's classic novel.

This is a horrible casting idea (the movie could be cool). The whole point of the origin of Captain Nemo was that he was an Indian prince fighting against the British Raj in India. How is that gonna work if he's obviously a black guy?

The whole point of Captain Nemo is that he's a super-genius, on the level of Fu Manchu or Blofeld but with more sympathetic motivations. Smith's good at what he's good at, and that's not playing a great scientist.

Eh, I like Smith.... and I don't know much about the Nemo character or story, but it just doesn't seem like a fit. Smith does Smith very well, but like Tom Cruise it's just impossible to see him as anyone else, no matter what the character.

Swapping an American white guy for an American black guy isn't that much of a stretch; they do it all the time in movies. Swapping an American black guy for an Indian guy is a bit harder, even though their skin color might be closer. Plus, like Artman above said, Will Smith is only really good at playing variations of himself, a smartass black guy. I just can't see him as Nemo.

My problem with Will Smith as Captain Nemo is that I don't think Smith can do historic roles that go back beyond about 50 years. I have a similar qualm with Tom Cruise's attempt to do historic roles; they're both too contemporary.
Ideally they would get an Indian actor to play this role, but since there aren't any Indian superstars (superstars in the West, that is), I could actually see Denzel Washington as Nemo if McG wanted to go with a black actor.

Aww, hell no!
For one thing, how will they fit in a scene for Will Smith as Capt. Nemo to put on Converse sneakers if those haven't been invented yet. Unless... they plan on Capt. Nemo inventing the tennis shoe!!!

They're saying Sam Worthington is going to be the new Nemo at IMDB. But let's see if they're going to stick to it, I believe he'd make an excellent Nemo.

Smith both annoys me(Independence Day), and entertains me; often the latter when I least expect him to do so(Hancock). That said, I'm open to this casting. Gawd forbid he should play the role and end up being good in it.

The article says he's in talks. Fincher has been "in talks" on several projects that he eventually passed on. I'll wait until the ink is dry before getting excited...and yeah it does seem like a strange project for DF.
