Re: McG wants Will Smith to play Capt. Nemo

A prequel?? WGAS/WGAF... why not just make a badass 20,000 Leagues? It's pretty ripe for a new adaptation.

But even more lame... McG??? Christ. This is gonna be his Sherlock Holmes, right?

Umm...McG is no longer attached. The current rumblings are about one David Fincher at the helm.

Ah, another ancient thread with an obsolete title.

I love this forum, but it's practically OCD in it's aversion to new threads. This is actually no longer the same project at all.

The McG Nemo origin story has been abandoned, and separately, Fincher is developing an adaptation of the novel "20,000 Leagues" (which is, amusingly, what I suggested in my post).

So seriously, new producers, new director, new script based on different material. In my opinion the upcoming Fincher film has nothing to do with the former McG project and is worthy of its own thread.

Or you could "report post" to the moderators to have them change the thread title...

Re: McG wants Will Smith to play Capt. Nemo

Fincher scopes out Brad Pitt for '20,000 Leagues'
Director courts frequent collaborator for role of harpoonist Ned Lands
By Jeff Sneider, Justin Kroll

With David Fincher still awaiting Steve Zaillian's script for "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" sequel, the helmer is looking to hoist his adaptation of Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" off the ocean floor at Disney.

Sources tell Variety that the studio has placed a three-month hold on the filmmaker as it decides whether to move forward with the project, which has stayed under the sonar ever since Fincher tapped his "Se7en" scribe Andrew Kevin Walker to rewrite the script back in November 2011. Pic has not yet received a greenlight.

Meanwhile, the conversation has turned to casting, with sources telling Variety that Fincher is courting his frequent collaborator Brad Pitt to star as sailor and master harpooner Ned Land. Kirk Douglas played the character in the 1954 original that was the only science fiction film produced by Walt Disney himself. An older A-List star would likely play iconic literary anti-hero Captain Nemo.

Disney had no comment, while Pitt's rep told Variety that he isn't committed to anything right now and continues to explore possibilities for next year, though the rep didn't deny that "20,000 Leagues" may be among them.

It's true that Pitt has no firm commitments outside of an attachment to James Gray's "The Gray Man," which has been in development for several years. Outside of voice roles in the animated pics "MegaMind" and "Happy Feet 2," Pitt is coming off a string of adult movies including "The Tree of Life" and "Moneyball" as well as violent upcoming pics "Killing Them Softly," "World War Z" and Ridley Scott's "The Counselor."

Pitt previously worked with Fincher on "Se7en," "Fight Club" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." Thesp, who recently wrapped a small role in Steve McQueen's "Twelve Years a Slave," is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

since we're on the topic, next week Cinemark will be showing the original (the recent 4K restoration) on their XD screens (2pm and 7pm) next Wednesday.

If they're looking for older, A List and still Indian for Nemo aren't the choices pretty much limited to Ben Kingsley?

Pretty much. Actually...that's it.

I've never read the book. I've seen the old film and various looks at Nemo in other visual forms..but...wtf is he supposed to look like in the book?

League of Extraordinary Gentleman's Nemo was more in line with the book.

Re: 20,00 Leagues Under the Sea (Disney) - News, Rumors, Cast, etc.

I hope this comes to be. I'd love to see Fincher get a huge mainstream hit and enjoy what that level of success brings him. I wonder if he'll change his tone for something like this or if it will be still very Fincher-esque with these huge set pieces weaved in. Regardless, I hope they include the scene of them walking on the bottom of the ocean and coming upon Atlantis. I think that was my favorite part of the book.

20,000 Leagues kind of seems like the sort of project they'd give Gore and Depp or Burton and Depp.

So Fincher still might make the follow-up to TGWTDT? I thought that was dead in the water at least with Fincher attached.

I would love to see him make 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Re: 20,00 Leagues Under the Sea (Disney) - News, Rumors, Cast, etc.

My understanding was that Nemo was intended to be Polish in the first novel, but the publisher had Verne edit that out because it might offend the large Russian market (which would have been the obvious enemy he was fighting).

20,00 Leagues Under the Sea (Disney) - News, Rumors, Cast, etc.

The original is ten times better than this remake will be.

I think the obvious choice for a revamped Capt. Nemo is Bill Murray. Think about he he was a naval captain disillusioned by war kind of sarcastic, giant octopus, brilliant.

I'd count us lucky if they even cast an actor with any non-European heritage. I'm betting they go for some Englishman with "Sir" before his name.

If they were really daring, they'd go for a Bollywood A-lister.

If they scrap the Indian aspect, Liam Neeson would be a good fit.

How about this guy? He can pull off the intellect, anger towards the world above, and remorse over the loss of his family and his crew.
