Re: 1 & Only Studio Ghibli Thread

GKIDS confirmed to be U.S. contributor.

https://variety.com/2023/film/news/m...cy-1235632765/
Miyazaki Hayao’s Final Film ‘How Do You Live’: Maximum Secrecy to Be Maintained Until Release

Producer hints that widely assumed plot details may be wrong.

Studio Ghibli, the iconic Japanese animation studio, will maintain a cloud of secrecy for as long as possible around “How Do You Live,” the final film from maestro Miyazaki Hayao (“Spirited Away,” “Howl’s Moving Castle,” “Princess Mononoke”).

The new movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters in Japan on July 14, but Studio Ghibli and its partners will do away with pre-release advertising and advanced information. To date it has released only a single enigmatic poster of a bird.
In a long interview with Bungei Shunju magazine now available on YouTube, Studio Ghibli president and producer Suzuki Toshio explained the unusual strategy as a ploy to whet the appetites of fans. They have been denied a new film by Miyazaki film since the 2013 “The Wind Rises.”

“They’ll want to see for themselves what the film is about,” Suzuki said. “And to do that, they’ll have to go a theater.”

When the magazine’s editor mentioned that the film is reportedly based on “How Do You Live,” a 1937 coming-of-age novel by Genzaburo Yoshino with a young male protagonist, Suzuki said that Miyazaki “only borrowed the title,” implying that plot descriptions available on the Internet based on summaries of Yoshino’s novel may be incorrect. Miyazaki, however, has previously called “How Do You Live” one of his favorite books.

Not mentioned by Suzuki, though known to long-time Studio Ghibli observers, is that Miyazaki’s perfectionism has previously led to production delays. These have meant that while Miyazaki films may hit their opening dates, they have done so minus the usual weeks and months of press screenings by distributor Toho.

Releasing no ads, trailers or information about the voice cast, however, is an extreme milestone, even for Studio Ghibli.

The film has been pre-sold in overseas territories, but currently has no foreign release dates penciled in. Gkids is set as its U.S. distributor.

Hayao Miyazaki is “concerned” by Studio Ghibli’s decision not to market his upcoming final film, ‘How Do You Live.’

“I wonder if it'll be okay without publicity. I am beginning to worry…”

Hard to know what's going on there. Maybe they think his name alone sells the movie or they are already way over budget and had to slash marketing.

Saw this on a plane to Japan (first time) and liked it well enough, though it hits all the same beats as the original even as a sequel.

On a side note, got to go to the recently opened Ghibli park, which is basically a bunch of stuff built on the 2005 Expo Aichi Commemorative Park. It is a pain and a half to get tickets and almost impossible for foreigners without some inside help. Three of the five planned sites are up:

Ghibli's Grand Warehouse, which is the main attraction. Basically a hodgepodge of different things to do and see all Ghibli related. You have a life sized Yubaba from Spirited Away, the robot from Castle in the Sky, a kids area with a Catbus, and several exhibitions including picture taking and an exhibition of the food presented in Ghibli films.

Hill of Youth, which is basically a recreation of the house from Whisper of the Heart.

Dondoko Forest, which is a recreation of the house from Totoro (which apparently was built for the expo originally), and is quite a ways away from the rest of the venue.

Unlike the Ghibli museum, you can take photos in most places here and it's fantastic for big fans. It's not an amusement park like Disney by any means (ie: not really any themed rides) but that probably fits with the spirit of Ghibli. Goro is in charge of the park and he agreed to do it to honor his father's retirement, but then his father did one last film which came out after the park opened so as usual he got the short end of the stick.

I regret two things: one that we didn't get an earlier slot to go (we went in the afternoon but basically ran out of time to really go through the shop, which was packed, and even missed the short movie they were showing) and that I didn't prepare my family a bit more by watching/rewatching the movies. To the uninitiated, two out of the three attractions just look like old Japanese houses.

Joe Hisaishi Confirmed to Score Hayao Miyazaki’s How Do You Live? Anime Film

Publisher Tokuma Japan Communications confirmed through its Crown Tokuma Music Shop that long-time Miyazaki collaborator Joe Hisaishi has returned to be the composer of How Do You Live?. The soundtrack is set to come with 37 songs, including the theme song of the film on August 9 with pre-orders available now—though, much like the film itself, there has been no preview of the music.

Re: 1 & Only Studio Ghibli Thread

Still seems weird but Miyazaki and Suzuki can afford to be eccentric with this, I guess. On the surface they're saying that no marketing is their marketing plan so we'll see. Hopefully it's not because it's a dud. And it's not like we're getting anything close to a simultaneous international release (I mean at this point, for his last film, why not?) so we'll have a ton of information by the time most of us get a chance to see it.

GKIDS ANNOUNCES THE NORTH AMERICAN ACQUISITION OF HAYAO MIYAZAKI'S “THE BOY AND THE HERON”

NEW FILM FROM STUDIO GHIBLI OPENS IN JAPAN TODAY

ACADEMY AWARD® WINNER HAYAO MIYAZAKI'S FIRST FEATURE IN 10 YEARS

NEW YORK (July 14, 2023) — GKIDS, the acclaimed producer and distributor of award-winning animation, announced its acquisition of North American distribution rights to THE BOY AND THE HERON, the highly anticipated new film from the legendary Academy Award-winning Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Japan's celebrated animation house, Studio Ghibli. Released in Japan as Kimitachi wa Do Ikiruka (translated as How Do You Live), the film is an original story written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, produced by the Oscar®-winning Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki, and features a musical score from Miyazaki's long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi.

The all-rights deal marks a continuation of GKIDS' long-standing relationship with Ghibli. GKIDS will release THE BOY AND THE HERON theatrically in North America later this year.

Informally referred to in English-language press by its tentative title, How Do You Live, the official international title is unveiled as THE BOY AND THE HERON. The hand-drawn, animated feature — director Miyazaki's first feature film in 10 years — opens exclusively in Japanese cinemas this weekend. In an unprecedented decision by Studio Ghibli, no images, trailers, synopses, advertisements, or other information about the film have been made available to the public prior to its release in theaters in Japan. In keeping with this policy, GKIDS will not release any further details or marketing materials at this time.

"Hayao Miyazaki is a living legend in filmmaking, as evidenced by his Academy Award win for Spirited Away and his two Oscar nominations for Howl's Moving Castle and The Wind Rises,'" said David Jesteadt, GKIDS president. "It's been ten years since the world has seen a new film from Miyazaki-san, and GKIDS is so proud and honored to unveil his latest, highly anticipated masterpiece in North America."

GKIDS handles North American distribution for the famed Studio Ghibli library of films across all theatrical, home video, digital, and streaming platforms. The company has released Studio Ghibli's most recent films in theaters nationwide, including the Academy Award-nominated The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, the Academy Award-nominated When Marnie Was There, From Up on Poppy Hill and more. Since 2017, GKIDS has produced the annual Ghibli Fest, a monthly nationwide theatrical program of Ghibli film screenings in over 800 theaters across the country. The series continues this year with a focus on the films of Hayao Miyazaki.

Miyazaki Hayao’s Final Film to Be Known as ‘The Boy and the Heron,’ Sets North America Release

U.S.-based distributor Gkids has acquired North American rights to Japanese animation maestro Miyazaki Hayao’s final movie. It will release it as “The Boy and the Heron.”

The highly-anticipated film released in Japanese theaters earlier on Friday as “Kimitachi wa Do Ikiruka” (“How Do You Live”). In an unprecedented decision by producer Studio Ghibli no images, trailers, synopses, advertisements, or other information about the film have been made available to the public prior to its Japanese theatrical outing.

“How Do You Live” has been the movie’s informal English title throughout its production phase, but Gkids says that “The Boy and the Heron” is now the official international title. In keeping with Ghibli’s Japan omerta, Gkids says it will not release any further details or marketing materials at the moment.

The film is understood to be based on Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 YA book of the same name which tells the story of a 15-year-old boy as he goes on a journey to discovery spiritual growth, poverty and the meaning of life with the help of his uncle, whose advice is communicated to him from a journal. How closely it actually hews to that story is only being discovered by theatrical audiences from Friday.

Gkids indicated that it would give “The Boy and the Heron” a North American theatrical release “later this year.” The picture is also expected to make appearances at various fall festivals. And a late 2023 North American theatrical outing means it has a significant chance of making a run for the Oscars.

The hand-drawn film is written and directed by Miyazaki, produced by the Oscar-winning Studio Ghibli co-founder Suzuki Toshio and features a musical score from Miyazaki’s long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi.

“Miyazaki is a living legend in filmmaking, as evidenced by his Academy Award win for ‘Spirited Away’ and his two Oscar nominations for ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ and ‘The Wind Rises’,’” said David Jesteadt, Gkids president. “It’s been ten years since the world has seen a new film from Miyazaki-san, and Gkids is so proud and honored to unveil his latest, highly anticipated masterpiece in North America.”

Gkids has handled North American releases of Studio Ghibli’s Oscar-nominated “The Tale of The Princess Kaguya,” Oscar-nominated “When Marnie Was There,” and “From Up on Poppy Hill.” Since 2017, it has produced the annual Studio Ghibli Fest, a monthly North American theatrical program of Ghibli film screenings in over 800 theaters.

Miyazaki was separately given an honorary award at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Governors Awards in 2014. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures paid tribute to his artwork with a special exhibit when the museum opened in September 2021.

Studio Ghibli last year opened a theme park based on Miyazaki’s works, which features rides and attractions inspired by films such as “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Princess Mononoke.” A “My Neighbor Totoro” stage adaptation by the Royal Shakespeare Company also opened in London, U.K.

Acclaimed anime art director Nizo Yamamoto passed away due to stomach cancer on Saturday, August 19. He was 70.
