Hello. I want to start my collection. I have never seen an anime movie in my life and I want to begin the journey.

I want to buy the superior editions in comparison to Audio/Video and Packaging ie: Slipcover / Digipak etc

I know since the initial releases that some countries might not have slipcovers any more but if someone has ordered recently and knows if it did or didn't come with it, please say so.

I am currently torn between UK/US releases

Have we got any crazy collectors here that can direct me?

I can't tell you anything about the packaging details or collector's concerns, I can only tell you what movies to start with: MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO and CASTLE IN THE SKY, and I can make those recommendations without even knowing where your tastes run. Because if you don't like those, then I can be no further help to you. But if you do and I'm informed of your other tastes, I'll have a better basis from which to make further recommendations.

But if you're more concerned with packaging and slipcovers, then someone else will have to weigh in.

Packaging wise, I like the Japanese hard book type ones better. Personal preference really. And also if you have the funds, they are the way to go.

Some people go with the Hong Kong route too. Their Ghibli releases include EngSub.

US or UK releases. To be honest, I don't believe there is much differences for audio/video (outside the pricing, region code). The UK releases though will be released faster than the US though.

EDIT: here is a possible info thread that could be helpful.

It looks like Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke) is the next JP Ghibli Blu-ray title after Pom Poko. It shouldn't be surprise if it holds since the last couple BD releases have been followed by the production year.

Does anyone know of ANY edition (preferably Region A) of Totoro on Blu-ray that includes the original English language dub that was used on the Fox VHS/DVD? That's the version I grew up watching and part of the reason I've held off buying the Disney release with the Dakota Fanning track.

Has anyone heard of if or when Spirited Away will be coming out on blu-ray?
