OpenAI CEO Responds to ChatGPT Users Creating Studio Ghibli-Style AI Images
The latest version of OpenAI‘s image generation technology has resulted in a flood of users sharing images on social media that have been transformed in the style of Studio Ghibli, the legendary Japanese animation studio.
On Tuesday, OpenAI launched what it called its “most advanced image generator yet,” built into GPT‑4o. That features a “natively multimodal model capable of precise, accurate, photorealistic outputs.” As it turns out, the image generator also is very good at replicating the anime style of Studio Ghibli, the company behind such popular films as “Spirited Away,” “My Neighbor Totoro” and “The Boy and the Heron.”
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, chimed in on the viral trend in a post on X Wednesday — indicating he has himself been Studio Ghibli-fied. Altman wrote, “> be me / > grind for a decade trying to help make superintelligence to cure cancer or whatever / > mostly no one cares for first 7.5 years, then for 2.5 years everyone hates you for everything / > wake up one day to hundreds of messages: ‘look i made you into a twink ghibli style haha.'”
Altman also changed his profile picture on X to a Ghibli-style image:
Reps for Studio Ghibli in North America declined to comment.
However, Hayao Miyazaki, the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, has previously expressed strong disapproval of AI-generated animation. In a 2016 meeting where he was shown an AI animation demo, Miyazaki said, “I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all.” He also said, “I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.”
More recently, Hollywood actors and other creatives have voiced concerns about efforts by OpenAI and other artificial-intelligence companies to “weaken or eliminate” protections on copyrighted works for training AI systems. In comments filed with the Trump administration‘s Office of Science and Technology Policy earlier this month, more than 400 filmmakers, actors, musicians and others objected to what they said was lobbying by OpenAI and Google “for a special government exemption so they can freely exploit America’s creative and knowledge industries.”
On social media, users have shared multiple examples of Ghibli-style images produced by OpenAI’s new image generator: [see article]

Studio Ghibli Distributor Champions ‘Princess Mononoke’ Box Office at ‘A Time When Technology Tries to Replicate Humanity’
Gkids, the North American distributor for Studio Ghibli films, is using a statement about the box office for a “Princess Mononoke” re-release to perhaps make an oblique commentary on the recent release of an AI tool that replicates the style of the iconic animation studio.
A new 4K restoration of the 1997 Studio Ghibli classic “Princess Mononoke,” from Hayao Miyazaki, was Thursday on Imax across 330 screens. The animated feature made $1.2 million in previews ahead of its Friday opening, according to Gkids. In a statement, Chase Huskey, VP of distribution for GKids, said, “In a time when technology tries to replicate humanity, we are thrilled that audiences value a theatrical experience that respects and celebrates Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s masterpiece in all its cinematic hand-drawn glory.”
The statement comes just one day after OpenAI launched its latest image generation technology, which quickly went viral as users started to apply the legendary studio’s style to their vacation snapshots and family portraits. But many in the animation and creative communities spoke out against idea of the time-consuming art of animation being replaced by an automated, anonymous technology.
Miyazaki, the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, has previously expressed strong disapproval of AI-generated animation.
In an interview with Variety, Akihiko Yamashita, who spent nearly two years working as the supervising animator on the Studio Ghibli film “Howl’s Moving Castle,” explained Miyazaki’s animation process. “He is somebody who actually draws himself. From the layout to the storyboards — everything — he draws it himself. And let’s say a key animator has drawn some animation. If he doesn’t like it, then he will change it and draw a rough drawing. Then, the key animators and other animators have to bring that to the final stage.” Yamashita added, “I really have no idea how many pages of drawings there were or how many cels we drew. I just know that we worked a huge amount and we drew a huge amount.”

Re: 1 & Only Studio Ghibli Thread
It's an interesting proposition but I suspect Ghibli has no real legal claim stopping AI from churning out animation in that style.
I imagine it's only a matter of time before someone makes an animated film this way. The AI is very good at taking live-action video and animating it in Ghibli's mold.

GKIDS and IMAX® Announce New Studio Ghibli 4K Restorations to Debut Exclusively in IMAX Locations Across North America
Fri, Dec 5, 2025
Following The Success of This Year’s IMAX Release of “Princess Mononoke”, IMAX And GKIDS Continue Their Partnership with Multiple Studio Ghibli Titles Planned For 2026
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 5, 2025-- GKIDS, the producer and distributor of artist-driven and award-winning animation from around the world, and IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX), an innovator in entertainment technology, announce an expanded partnership to bring further 4K Studio Ghibli restorations to North American theaters in 2026 and beyond. The announcement comes after the highly successful IMAX release of “Princess Mononoke,” which is the second-highest grossing vault release ever for IMAX. The next Studio Ghibli title to be released under the agreement will debut in IMAX in 2026, with more details to come.
The IMAX versions of the films are being created from new 4K restorations directly overseen by Studio Ghibli’s own Atsushi Okui, who has been involved in nearly every major Studio Ghibli project since he first started in 1993. Okui’s most recent credit with Studio Ghibli was as Director of Digital Imaging on Miyazaki’s Academy Award®-winning feature “The Boy and the Heron,” which was also the first Studio Ghibli film to screen in IMAX.
“GKIDS is thrilled to extend our relationship with IMAX for more Studio Ghibli releases,” said Eric Beckman, CEO of GKIDS. “As a company, GKIDS is a champion of the shared theatrical experience – and what better way for fans to experience the unparalleled visual beauty, immersive worlds, and deeply humanistic storytelling of Studio Ghibli than in IMAX. The original picture and sound elements are being lovingly and meticulously restored in 4K by Studio Ghibli and we are beyond excited to be able to share the results with North American audiences.”
"Studio Ghibli has long been synonymous with exceptional storytelling and a devoted global fanbase, and we’re ready to build on our strong foundation with the studio as we partner with GKIDS to bring some of its most celebrated titles to IMAX,” said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. "As animation continues to thrive as a box office and cultural force, IMAX is poised to meet that demand at scale as the industry’s only truly global platform for cinema.”
GKIDS handles North American distribution for the famed Studio Ghibli library of films across all theatrical, home video, digital, and streaming platforms. The company has released Studio Ghibli’s most recent films in theaters nationwide, including the Academy Award-winning “The Boy and the Heron,” the Academy Award-nominated “The Tale of The Princess Kaguya,” the Academy Award-nominated “When Marnie Was There,” “From Up on Poppy Hill” and more. Since 2017, GKIDS has produced the annual Ghibli Fest, a monthly nationwide theatrical program of Studio Ghibli film screenings in over 1000 theaters across the country. IMAX and GKIDS have been partnered since 2021 on a wide collection of titles, including the groundbreaking 2023 title “The Boy and The Heron.”

IMAX and GKIDS have been partnered since 2021 on a wide collection of titles, including the groundbreaking 2023 title “The Boy and The Heron.”

Surprisingly, Kiki's Delivery Service is eligible for A-List, so no brainer for me to see it in IMAX. Lots of showings over the course of the week too, in both Japanese or English.
