What anime did DISTRICT 9 remind you of?
There's a scene in DISTRICT 9 where
This scene reminded me of similar scenes in SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO and ARCADIA OF MY YOUTH (the Capt. Harlock origin story).
But the basic premise of
seemed very familiar, too. Does anyone here recall an anime with that premise?

You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of the movie, or didn't pay attention. That was the command module that fell from the ship when it came to Earth.
