GKIDS has acquired the film for North America, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand, while Anime Ltd. has acquired the film for the United Kingdom, Ireland, and all of Europe. PLAION PICTURES will handle Italian and German speaking territories. GKIDS and Anime Ltd. have engaged Charades to manage sales for the rest of Europe, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand.

The distributors along with animation studio Science SARU and producers Story inc. revealed the new film’s official English language title as THE COLORS WITHIN.

It was announced today that the film will have its world premiere in competition at the prestigious 2024 Annecy International Animated Film Festival. GKIDS and Anime Ltd. will theatrically release the film in both its original Japanese language and a new English dubbed version this winter, and GKIDS will qualify the film for 2024-25 awards consideration. The film will be domestically released in Japan on August 30th.

SYNOPSIS: Totsuko is a high school student with the ability to see the ‘colors’ of others. Colors of bliss, excitement, and serenity, plus a color she treasures as her favorite. Kimi, a classmate at her school, gives off the most beautiful color of all. Although she doesn’t play an instrument, Totsuko forms a band with Kimi and Rui, a quiet music enthusiast they meet at a used bookstore in a far corner of town. As they practice at an old church on a remote island, music brings them together, forming friendships and stirring affections. Will they discover their true ‘colors’?

THE COLORS WITHIN is directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Naoko Yamada (A Silent Voice, Liz and the Blue Bird, “The Heike Story”), with production from studio Science SARU (“Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” Inu-Oh, “The Heike Story”). Producer Genki Kawamura’s Story inc. (Your Name., Weathering With You, Suzume), is additionally attached to the film for planning and producing. Screenwriter Reiko Yoshida (Ride Your Wave, “Violet Evergarden”) penned the script, and longtime Science SARU collaborator kensuke ushio (“DEVILMAN crybaby,” “Chainsaw Man,” A Silent Voice) composed the score. Frequent Science SARU collaborator Takashi Kojima, who most recently worked with director Yamada on “The Heike Story,” joined the production as character designer and animation director.

Director Yamada worked s a key animator on many seminal television series, such as “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya,” “Lucky Star,” and “Clannad.” She went on to direct the beloved show “K-On!” and its sequel, as well as the critically acclaimed animated features A Silent Voice and Liz and the Blue Bird. In 2021, Yamada directed “The Heike Story,” her first work at studio Science SARU, which also debuted to wide acclaim.

GKIDS and ANIME LTD. have worked together on many of the top anime titles of the past several years, with GKIDS taking North America and Anime Ltd. taking UK and additional territories. Films the two companies have both handled include BELLE, EVANGELION:3.0+1.11 THRICE UPON A TIME, The First Slam Dunk, the Golden GlobeŽ-nominated Inu-Oh, the Academy AwardŽ-nominated Mirai, Weathering With You, and many more. This marks the first time the two companies have partnered on a global acquisition.

Mamoru Oshii To Oversee 4K Remastering Of 1985 Animation ‘Angel’s Egg’ As Gebeka Int’l Lines Up Cannes Sales Launch

EXCLUSIVE: Animation-focused sales company Gebeka International has acquired world sales rights to an upcoming 4K remastered version of Japanese animation director Mamoru Oshii’s 1985 animated feature Angel’s Egg.

Oshii is best known internationally for 1995 breakout Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, which world premiered in Competition in Cannes in 2004, and the Patlabor sci-fi franchise.

Angel’s Egg was first released on video by Japanese publishing and media company Tokuma Shoten in 1985, and, with time, it has come to be regarded by anime fans as a masterpiece that holds keys to Oshii’s later works.

The surreal, allegorical work is set against the backdrop of an underwater city and revolves around a young girl who takes scrupulous care of a large egg in the belief it is an angel’s egg. When a boy with a gun arrives in search of a bird he saw in a dream, he appears initially to be sympathetic to her mission, but then, he crushes the precious object.

The feature is based on an original story by Oshii and artist Yoshitaka Amano, who is the artistic designer for the popular Final Fantasy franchise.

Oshii directed Angel’s Egg, while Amano was art director. The voice cast features late Japanese star Jinpachi Nezu and Mako Hyodo.

As the 40th anniversary of its release approaches, rights holder and producer Tokuma Shoten has gotten behind the remastering project, with Oshii supervising the scanning of the original 35mm film and remastering in 4K. The remastered version will be made available this year in 4K formats suitable for Dolby cinema, theatrical and home theatre.

“With Mamoru Oshii overseeing the 4K remastering of Angel’s Egg, viewers can expect to immerse themselves in a cinematic experience that transcends the boundaries of animation, delivering a visually stunning and emotionally resonant journey that defies conventional storytelling. We are thrilled to handle international sales and that the film will be given a new life worldwide,” said Gebeka International sales agent Jason Bressand.

France-based sales company Gebeka International was created as a joint venture between Goodfellas (former Wild Bunch International) and animation company Gebeka Films in 2021, with a focus on all types of animation from stop-motion to 3D.

Further upcoming titles on its slate include Liane-Cho Han and Mailys Vallade’s Little Amelie, Guillaume Ivernel’s The Legendaries and Savages by Claude Barras, the Oscar-nominated director My life as a Zucchini, which will world premiere as a Special Screening in Cannes.

Tokyo-based Tokuma Shoten was founded in 1954 and is one of Japan’s oldest publishing groups. It was the first Japanese publishing company to take a mixed media approach to produce films based on its books. For a time, it counted Studio Ghibli, Daiei Film, and record label Tokuma Japan Communications as part of its group.

More recently, Tokuma Shoten have enjoyed success with BL content and weekly webcomic Ryu, which features works such as Everyday Life with Monster Girls by Okayado, which has become an international bestseller, while its portfolio of modern literature authors includes Jiro Akagawa, Kyotaro Nishimura, Riku Onda, Maha Harada and Shion Miura.

GLASGOW, MAY 25TH 2024 – Anime Limited, under license from BIGWEST, are thrilled to reveal their plans for the release of the Macross Plus Ultimate Edition, bringing this classic show to Blu Ray in English-speaking territories for the first time outside of Japan.

In a landmark moment for fans of the decades-spanning legendary Macross franchise, the beloved classic 1995 film – together with its original four-part OVA presentation – will be made available for fans for the first time in English on Blu-ray. Created by BIGWEST and Studio Nue, with Shoji Kawamori (Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Escaflowne) serving as executive director, the film marks the directorial debut of Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) as co-director and the first collaboration with inimitable composer Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne).

In keeping with the significance of this release, Anime Limited are giving Macross Plus their trademark Ultimate Edition treatment, with a luxurious and high quality release that will be the centrepiece of any discerning anime fan’s collection.

This Ultimate Edition comes packaged in a large rigid slipcase adorned with the title’s most iconic visuals, within which is contained an immense and comprehensive hardback book chronicling the history, production and creative efforts behind Macross Plus – from interviews with its creators through to character designs, background and key animation artwork, this is the world of Macross Plus as you’ve never seen it before.

Also included with the set is a series of nine art cards celebrating all of the title’s key visuals, plus an A3 “concert promotion” poster serving as an homage to virtual pop idol Sharon Apple.

This attention to detail also extends to the contents of the discs themselves – as well as containing both the movie and OVA versions of Macross Plus, an anime praised as a “visual tour de force” by Forbes, these discs also contain a wealth of options and bonus content to allow fans to fully explore the title. Features on the disc includes the full Manga Entertainment dub for the OVA version of the show, as well as the Bandai Visual dub of OVA #4, while both Neil Nadelman’s Manga Entertainment subtitles and Bandai Visual’s subtitle options are present for the Movie Edition. With a host of other extras including an interview with Shoji Kawamori and Special Visual Effects Director Ichiro Itano, this is the ultimate Macross Plus viewing experience for new and old fans alike.

In North America, the Macross Plus Ultimate Edition will be available exclusively via the Crunchyroll Store, while UK customers will be able to purchase the product exclusively from the AllTheAnime.com storefront. Pre-orders for the release will open on Thursday, June 6th at 5PM BST / 12PM EST / 9AM PST. In France, customers will be able to purchase an exclusive Macross Plus Ultimate Edition French version limited to 100 units through our AllTheAnime.fr online shop, with pre-orders opening at the same time.

Additional editions of Macross Plus will also be available for France and other European territories to follow, with more details to be confirmed later in the year.

This will be followed by a Japanese guest panel and the world premiere screening of【OSHI NO KO】Season 2 Episode 2.
