A little off topic, but I rooted for the New York Giants simply because they were the underdogs, but on hindsight, I'm not sure if it was the right move. I was practically on the fence; I wanted the Patriots to go undefeated but also wanted to see the Giants give them Patriots a run for their money and win. Sorry for asking this question, it's probably buried in this thread somewhere but, Besides stripping the extras is there any quality loss in the ADV Thin pack releases? Going from 7 discs to say 5 seems like it will take a bitrate hit unless of course they go from single layer discs to using Dual-layers.

Because according to Wiki it was supposedly never finished. Note that each volume is a stand-alone story: the plots are connected only by theme and by the appearance of the titular Phoenix. So while the story cycle is technically "incomplete", it doesn't just suddenly come to a crashing halt in the middle of a plot thread. There've been a few anime adaptations of individual volumes of Phoenix over the years. The Media Blasters release you pointed out is the most recent adaptation and covers 5 of the 12 Phoenix stories. |
Also note that, if you don't mind the lack of subtitles, you can purchase the entire series dubbed from the iTunes Store for $9.99.

There is almost no chance that other studios will do this. Other studios will likely start and do more boxsets/complete collection releases versus single volume releases. ADV: ??? I'm surprised they're re-releasing the non-LE versions with the character CDs... as you'd think the hardcore fans are the only ones who would want the CDs, and they most likely have already bought the LEs. Ah well, I love the show but I'm not double dipping for that. Thanks for the info WTK! I've been trying to cut back a bit on anime spending, so I've avoided reading up on new releases for a while now, so I had no idea.

Anime DVDs Down 20% Manga Market Still Strong in '07 February 13, 2008 According to the ICv2 Guide #51: Anime/Manga, sales of anime DVDs in North America tumbled by more than 20% during 2007. The number of anime releases in the North American market also continued to fall, dropping another 21% after a 19% decline in 2006. ICv2 estimates the size of the North American anime market at $275-300 million (in retail dollars). The difficulty of ascertaining the scope of mass market anime sales (especially through Wal-Mart, which does not report its DVD sales) makes a precise calculation of the market size difficult. In spite of declines in both sales and the number of releases, the ICv2 Guide still finds positive signs for the future of anime in America including a growing awareness of anime among American audiences, the eagerness of American anime companies to do whatever they can to shorten the gap between when an anime series debuts in Japan and when it is released in the U.S., and the willingness of those companies to both experiment with new modes of delivery and to devise new lower cost formats. ICv2's manga and graphic novel market estimates aren't available yet, but it does appear that manga had another strong year in 2007 although its rate of growth is clearly slowing. The major problem facing both publishers and retailers engaged in the manga market remains the proliferation of new titles, which, if publisher projections are to be believed, will be coming at you at the rate of 33 volumes of manga per week. The new ICv2 Guide also covers the growing number of live action Asian movie releases including in this issue, reviews of two live action films based on popular manga series -- Love*Com, which adapts Aya Nakahara's popular shojo manga, and Death Note, a superb live action version of the hugely popular manga written by Tsugumi Ohba. I traded my four-volume release for the one-volume CE when it came out. (I definitely prefer the sub dialog to the dub; Urara was a spoiled little brat in the dub, but a lot more naive/conflicted/honest in the sub, imho.) Sorry to bring up a previous post. I just notice from reading netflix customer opinions, that Sakura Diaries Vol. 1, 2, 3, 4 is also available in English dub. So what's the difference OR better question, why release four separate individual volumes (year 2000) consisting of all 12 episodes, THEN release two OVA (year 2005) volume consisting of the same 12 episodes? I am actually reluctant due to its sub-only release. A dubbed track would have been an automatic pre-order AND essentially blind-buy, which I seldom if ever do with Anime. Blind-buys are much easier with American cartoon given that animation is just world's better in cartoons. ...Not to get you guys to excited but I know from a very good source that Geneon is in their final stages of finishing their distribution deal with someone. The source is from pretty high up on the food chain so I trust it. I predict in the next several weeks you will hear an announcement. But my understanding is that Geneon will still be doing licensing and not all titles will go through this distribution deal but I do not have all the details. You have to understand the Japanese way and it becomes much easier to understand in that Japan companies are realy like a circle jerk. Meaning they all own part of each other. Mitsubishi invests in Index who owns Nikkatsu who owns Media Suits or Mitsubishi invests in Geneon who is owned by Dentsu who owns...you get what I mean. -Js |

Can anyone actually tell me about Lucky Star? I'm a sucker for LEs, but that's pretty steep, even with the RightStuf sale, and the LE artwork for the case itself is not as good as the RE. I didn't mind spending the extra for the Haruhi LEs, because the show was pretty short and I enjoyed it, even though most of the extras (the headband, etc.) were somewhat useless. This is another 2 extra volumes of expensiveness.
