Dir.: Edward Zwick. Stars: Tom Cruise, Ken Watanabe.

11. HIGH NOON (1952/U.S., 84 min., b&w, western/UA) Seen on Encore West-HD
Dir.: Fred Zinnemann. Stars: Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly.
On his last day on the job, a marshal is alerted to the impending arrival of a vengeful outlaw and the town refuses to stand with him. Classic western that’s more about the politics of its era than actual western history. Cooper won the Best Actor Oscar for this.

Kenshin and his entourage arrive in Yokohama only to get caught up in the middle of a new revolt against the Meiji government. Not as exciting as the other Rurouni Kenshin productions, but still an intriguing take on that period of Japanese history.

17. GOODFELLAS (1990/U.S., 146 min., color, crime drama/WB) DVD
Dir.: Martin Scorsese. Stars: Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta.

June 21, 2013

Dir.: George Sherman. Stars: Jeff Chandler, Maureen O’Hara.
Chandler plays an army major who has to convince a band of forcibly relocated Seminoles out west to fight the Kiowas on the army’s behalf. Quite an unusual angle for an army-vs.-Indians western.
19. THE COCKPIT (1994/Japan, 83 min., color, animated war drama) VHS (English-dubbed)
Directors: Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Takashi Imanishi, Ryosuke Takahashi.
Three stories, each by a different director, based on WWII-themed manga stories by Leiji Matsumoto. The first one’s about a Nazi fighter pilot, the second is about a Japanese suicide pilot in the last days of the war, while the third is about a Japanese soldier riding a motorcycle to certain death on a Philippines island after the Americans have landed. Rare opportunity to see war stories told from the viewpoint of this viewer’s onetime enemies.
June 22, 2013
20. *COLORADO SERENADE (1946/U.S., 68 min., color, western/PRC) Seen on EWST-HD
Dir.: Robert Emmett Tansey. Stars: Eddie Dean, Dave Sharpe.
Rare color B-western about a singing cowboy investigating gold robberies in a town run by bad elements. Stuntman-turned-co-lead Sharpe enlivens the action scenes.

21. IRON MONKEY (1993/Hong Kong, 86 min., color, martial arts adventure) Blu-ray
Dir.: Yuen Wo Ping. Stars: Donnie Yen, Yu Rong Guang.
Yen stars as Wong Kei-Ying, father of Wong Fei-Hung (1847-1924), who’s played as an eleven-year-old here by a 12-year-old female martial arts student. Yu Rong Guang plays a doctor who masquerades as the Robin Hood-like Iron Monkey who robs from the corrupt to give to the poor.
22. *BHOWANI JUNCTION (1956/U.S.-UK, 110 min., color, historical drama/MGM) Seen on TCM-HD
Dir.: George Cukor. Stars: Ava Gardner, Stewart Granger.
The turbulent build-up to India’s independence serves as a backdrop for a tepid Hollywood romantic melodrama involving an Anglo-Indian (played by white American southern girl Ava) and the three men she has to choose from: a British officer, an Anglo-Indian bureaucrat, and an Indian of the Sikh religion, all played by English actors. Gandhi makes a cameo.

23. *“Rose of Versailles” (1979/Japan, color, historical drama/TV series) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
#5: With Tears of Dignity…
#6: The Silk Dress and the Ragged Dress
#7: Who Wrote the Love Letter
#8: Oscar in My Heart
Marie Antoinette visits Paris for the first time and revels in the adoration of the crowd. She also meets a handsome Swedish nobleman who becomes a regular visitor of hers at the palace, while Marie’s husband, the future king of France, neglects her.

June 23, 2013
24. *MARIE ANTOINETTE (1938/U.S., 157 min., b&w, historical drama/MGM) VHS (taped off TCM) Dir. W.S. Van Dyke II. Stars: Norma Shearer, Tyrone Power, Robert Morley.
Lavish production of the life of the late Queen of France, from her arrival in Versailles as a teenager to her sad end in the midst of the French Revolution. Powerful, wonderfully acted Hollywood drama and one of the best of its type. Benjamin Franklin makes a cameo appearance.

June 24, 2013
25. *MARIE ANTOINETTE (2006/U.S., 123 min., color, historical drama/Columbia) DVD
Dir.: Sofia Coppola. Stars: Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman.
Coppola’s portrait of the ill-fated queen focuses on her pampered life within the palace, that of a bird in a gilded cage, but suffers from its distanced approach which avoids an emotional attachment to the subject.
June 25, 2013
26. KILLER CONSTABLE (1980/HK, 92 min., color, kung fu adventure/Shaw Bros.) R3 DVD (in Mandarin with English subs.)
Dir.: Kuei Chih-hung. Star: Chen Kuan Tai.
The robbery of the Imperial court’s royal treasury in China in 1876 leads to the “killer constable” being assigned to find and kill the robbers, leading to the revelation of high-level treachery in court. Attempt to make a more serious and moody kung fu drama means less fun. The Empress Dowager makes a cameo appearance.
June 27, 2013
27. *RED LION (1969/Japan, 116 min., color, historical drama) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
Dir.: Kihachi Okamoto. Star: Toshiro Mifune.
Mifune plays a slightly nutty peasant who joins an advance troop of the Imperial Army and returns to his hometown, after ten years, to try and shake off the influence of the Shogun before the Imperial troops get there. With his Red Lion clip-on "mane," he becomes like a god to the villagers and takes on the local bosses--to comic effect. Quite an unusual look at life in a backwater village during that turbulent period in Japan when the Shogun's power was waning and the Meiji Emperor was about to take control.

28a. *“Rose of Versailles” (1979/Japan, color, historical drama/TV series) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
#9: The Sun Sets, the Sun Rises
#10: The Beautiful Devil, Jeanne
King Louis XV dies and the Dauphin, Marie Antoinette's husband, becomes King Louis XVI.
28b. “Animated Classics of Japanese Literature” (1986/Japan, 48 min., color, drama) VHS (in Japanese with English subs.
“The Tale of Shunkin” based on a story by Junichiro Tanizaki
“Friendship” based on a story by Saneatsu Mushanokoji
TV episodes based on Japanese stories about young love during the Meiji era.

June 29, 2013
29. GATE OF HELL (1953/Japan, 89 min., color, historical drama/Daiei) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
Dir.: Teinosuke Kinugasa. Stars: Machiko Kyo, Kazuo Hasegawa.
Only the second color film made in Japan and the first to have a historical setting. This was awarded an Honorary Oscar as Best Foreign Language Film and also won an Oscar for Costume Design. In the 12th century, a samurai hero is asked what reward he wants and demands the wife of one of the court nobles. A deceptively simple storyline is given elegant treatment aided by stunning use of color.

30. SHAOLIN MANTIS (1978/Hong Kong, 100 min., color, kung fu drama/Shaw Bros.) DVD (in Mandarin with English subs.)
Dir.: Lau Kar Leung. Stars: David Chiang, Wong Hang Sau.
The director died a few days ago so I decided to watch one of his best films. This is a tale of a Qing spy in 17th century China who infiltrates a household of Ming holdouts and marries the patriarch’s granddaughter and then has to fight his way out, with her at his side. A great kung fu movie.

June 30, 2013
31. *INSIDE THE FORBIDDEN CITY (1963/Hong Kong, 98 min., color, historical drama/Shaw Bros.) R3 DVD (in Mandarin with English subs.) Dir.: Kao Li. Star: Ivy Ling Po.
Convoluted story done in the “Huangmei Opera” style, in which much of the dialogue is sung. In the court of the Sung Dynasty emperor (11th century China), one concubine’s jealousy leads to another’s exile and the abandonment of her baby, who winds up in a relative’s household, gets adopted by the Empress and eventually becomes Emperor. A traveling judge hears the story from the exiled concubine and agrees to plead her case.
