Re: The Fourth Annual Historical Appreciation Challenge - List Thread

Ash Ketchum’s 3rd Annual Historical Challenge

* - First-time viewings

June 1, 2013
1. *SONG WITHOUT END (1960/U.S., 130 min., color, biopic/musical drama/Columbia) VHS (taped off TCM)
Directors: Charles Vidor, George Cukor. Stars: Dirk Bogarde, Capucine, Genevieve Page.
Dirk Bogarde plays composer Franz Liszt during the concert pianist phase of his career when he toured Europe and was treated like a rock star. Performance scenes shot on location in Vienna.

2. Rurouni Kenshin Vol. 1 (1996/Japan, 97 min., color, samurai adventure/anime TV series) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
Dir.: Kazuhiro Furuhashi.
#1: The Handsome Swordsman of Legend: A Man Who Fights for Love
#2: Kid Samurai: A Big Ordeal and a New Student
#3: Swordsman of Sorrow: The Man Who Slays His Past
#4: Bad! Introducing Sanosuke, Fighter-for-Hire
A swordsman who fought for the Imperialists tries to put his past behind him in Tokyo in the Meiji era, but it keeps catching up with him.

3. SHINSENGUMI: ASSASSINS OF HONOR (1970/Japan, 122 min., color, samurai drama/Toho) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
Dir.: Tadashi Sawajima. Star: Toshiro Mifune.
The Shinsengumi started out as a makeshift crew of ronin formed to protect the Shogun in a time of conflict with Imperial forces in the years leading up to the Meiji Restoration, which began in 1868. This film offers a powerful dramatization of their ill-fated campaign.

June 2, 2013
4. Rurouni Kenshin Vol. 2 (1996/Japan, 97 min., color, samurai adventure/anime TV series) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
Dir.: Kazuhiro Furuhashi.
#5: The Reverse-Blade Sword vs. the Zanbatou: Beyond the Battle
#6: The Appearance of Kurogasa: Visitor from the Shadows
#7: Deathmatch under the Moon! Protect the One You Love
#8: A New Battle! The Mysterious Beauty From Nowhere

5. *THE GREAT GATSBY (2013/U.S., 142 min., color, 3-D, drama/Warner Bros.) Seen at East 86th Street Cinemas, Manhattan.
Dir.: Baz Luhrmann. Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire.
A literary work visualized through hallucinatory images. A fever dream of the Jazz Age.

June 3, 2013
6. KILLER CLANS (1976/Hong Kong, 101 min., color, historical adventure/Shaw Bros.) DVD (in Mandarin with English subs.) Dir.: Chor Yuen. Stars: Ku Feng, Yueh Hua. Intricate costume adventure involving betrayals and clan warfare. Based on a novel by Ku Lung, who specialized in elaborate tales of a fanciful “martial arts world” of competing societies of swordsmen in Old China.

June 4, 2013
7. THE BUSHIDO BLADE (1979/U.S.-UK, 90 min., color, historical adventure/Rankin-Bass) DVD
Dir.: Tom Kotani. Stars: Richard Boone, Frank Converse, Toshiro Mifune, Laura Gemser.
American film shot in Japan with a Japanese crew and a mixed cast of Americans and Japanese. Commodore Matthew Perry’s second trip to Japan (in 1854) to try and forge a treaty with the Shogun provides the background to a hackneyed plot involving three Americans who pursue a stolen sword in the Japanese countryside.

June 5, 2013
8. “Rose of Versailles” (1979/Japan, 97 min., color, animated historical drama/TV series) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
Dir.: Osamu Dezaki. Based on a manga by Riyoko Ikeda.
#1: Oscar! The Destiny of the Rose
#2: Fly! The Butterfly of Austria
#3: Sparks Fly at Versailles
#4: Roses, Wine and the Conspiracy…
Beautifully designed and animated tale of a female commander assigned to guard Marie Antoinette when she comes to France to marry the Dauphin. Episode 4 includes MA's famous confrontation with Madame Du Barry.

June 7, 2013
9. SHINSENGUMI CHRONICLES: I WANT TO DIE A SAMURAI (1963/Japan, 93 min., color, historical adventure/Daiei) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
Dir.: Kenji Misumi. Stars: Raizo Ichikawa, Tomisaburo Wakayama, Shiho Fujimura.
More streamlined version of the Shinsengumi saga than is seen in SHINSENGUMI: ASSASSINS OF HONOR (see #3) and far less a romanticization of this ill-fated motley crew. Tomisaburo Wakayama (Lone Wolf and Cub) plays the role Mifune plays in the later film.

June 8, 2013
10. THE LAST SAMURAI (2003/U.S., 154 min., color, historical adventure/WB) DVD
Dir.: Edward Zwick. Stars: Tom Cruise, Ken Watanabe.
An American army captain gets involved with the last samurai rebellion in Japan in 1877. Despite its fudging of several historical details, it does have more of a genuine feel for the flavor and culture of Japan than most Hollywood movies about Japan.

June 9, 2013
11. HIGH NOON (1952/U.S., 84 min., b&w, western/UA) Seen on Encore West-HD
Dir.: Fred Zinnemann. Stars: Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly.
On his last day on the job, a marshal is alerted to the impending arrival of a vengeful outlaw and the town refuses to stand with him. Classic western that’s more about the politics of its era than actual western history. Cooper won the Best Actor Oscar for this.

June 10, 2013
12. WALK THE PROUD LAND (1956/U.S., 88 min., color, western/Universal) VHS
Dir.: Jesse Hibbs. Stars: Audie Murphy, Anne Bancroft.
Murphy stars as John P. Clum, Indian Agent at the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona during the crucial period before Geronimo’s eventual capture. Rare story of a government representative who tries to improve the lot of the Indians. Clum eventually became a newspaper editor in Tombstone and an ally of Wyatt Earp, a period well covered in later westerns.

June 12, 2013
13. Hopalong Cassidy: Public Hero #1 (2001/U.S., 67 min., color and b&w, documentary/Starz Encore Entertainment) VHS
Dir.: Keith R. Clarke. Host: Dennis Weaver.
Documentary about cowboy hero Hopalong Cassidy and the actor, William Boyd, who forged a successful 20-year career playing him. Excellent chronicle of the whole "Hoppy" phenomenon, which took the country by storm in the 1950s.

June 13, 2013
14. *Susan B. Anthony Slept Here (1995/U.S., 47 min., color, documentary/Alvin Cooperman Productions) VHS
Dir.: Alvin Cooperman. Host: Lynn Sherr. Special guests: Hillary Rodham Clinton, Mae Jemison, Blair Brown, Donna de Varona.
Guided tour of American sites where notable women lived and worked, including Babe Zacharias, Georgia O'Keefe, Madame C.J. Walker, Susan B. Anthony, and Christa McAuliffe.

15. *Sex, Censorship and the Silver Screen, Part 1: The Early Decades (1996/U.S., 49 min., color and b&w, documentary/Showtime) DVD
Narrator: Raquel Welch.
Compilation of film clips from the silent era to the pre-Code films of the early 1930s, illustrating Hollywood's obsession with sex and its constant battles with the censors.

June 15, 2013
16. SAMURAI X: THE MOTION PICTURE (aka RUROUNI KENSHIN: REQUIEM FOR MEIJI RESTORATION PATRIOTS, 1997/Japan, 90 min., color, historical adventure) VHS (English-dubbed) Dir.: Hajiki Tsuji.
Kenshin and his entourage arrive in Yokohama only to get caught up in the middle of a new revolt against the Meiji government. Not as exciting as the other Rurouni Kenshin productions, but still an intriguing take on that period of Japanese history.

June 18, 2013
17. GOODFELLAS (1990/U.S., 146 min., color, crime drama/WB) DVD
Dir.: Martin Scorsese. Stars: Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta.
The antics of three mob-connected hoods from the 1950s to the 1980s. Based on a true story. As honest and unflinching a depiction of low-life, amoral criminality as any in American cinema.

June 21, 2013
18. WAR ARROW (1953/U.S., 78 min., color, western/Universal) DVD
Dir.: George Sherman. Stars: Jeff Chandler, Maureen O’Hara.
Chandler plays an army major who has to convince a band of forcibly relocated Seminoles out west to fight the Kiowas on the army’s behalf. Quite an unusual angle for an army-vs.-Indians western.

19. THE COCKPIT (1994/Japan, 83 min., color, animated war drama) VHS (English-dubbed)
Directors: Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Takashi Imanishi, Ryosuke Takahashi.
Three stories, each by a different director, based on WWII-themed manga stories by Leiji Matsumoto. The first one’s about a Nazi fighter pilot, the second is about a Japanese suicide pilot in the last days of the war, while the third is about a Japanese soldier riding a motorcycle to certain death on a Philippines island after the Americans have landed. Rare opportunity to see war stories told from the viewpoint of this viewer’s onetime enemies.

June 22, 2013
20. *COLORADO SERENADE (1946/U.S., 68 min., color, western/PRC) Seen on EWST-HD
Dir.: Robert Emmett Tansey. Stars: Eddie Dean, Dave Sharpe.
Rare color B-western about a singing cowboy investigating gold robberies in a town run by bad elements. Stuntman-turned-co-lead Sharpe enlivens the action scenes.

21. IRON MONKEY (1993/Hong Kong, 86 min., color, martial arts adventure) Blu-ray
Dir.: Yuen Wo Ping. Stars: Donnie Yen, Yu Rong Guang.
Yen stars as Wong Kei-Ying, father of Wong Fei-Hung (1847-1924), who’s played as an eleven-year-old here by a 12-year-old female martial arts student. Yu Rong Guang plays a doctor who masquerades as the Robin Hood-like Iron Monkey who robs from the corrupt to give to the poor.

22. *BHOWANI JUNCTION (1956/U.S.-UK, 110 min., color, historical drama/MGM) Seen on TCM-HD
Dir.: George Cukor. Stars: Ava Gardner, Stewart Granger.
The turbulent build-up to India’s independence serves as a backdrop for a tepid Hollywood romantic melodrama involving an Anglo-Indian (played by white American southern girl Ava) and the three men she has to choose from: a British officer, an Anglo-Indian bureaucrat, and an Indian of the Sikh religion, all played by English actors. Gandhi makes a cameo.

23. *“Rose of Versailles” (1979/Japan, color, historical drama/TV series) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
#5: With Tears of Dignity…
#6: The Silk Dress and the Ragged Dress
#7: Who Wrote the Love Letter
#8: Oscar in My Heart
Marie Antoinette visits Paris for the first time and revels in the adoration of the crowd. She also meets a handsome Swedish nobleman who becomes a regular visitor of hers at the palace, while Marie’s husband, the future king of France, neglects her.

June 23, 2013
24. *MARIE ANTOINETTE (1938/U.S., 157 min., b&w, historical drama/MGM) VHS (taped off TCM) Dir. W.S. Van Dyke II. Stars: Norma Shearer, Tyrone Power, Robert Morley.
Lavish production of the life of the late Queen of France, from her arrival in Versailles as a teenager to her sad end in the midst of the French Revolution. Powerful, wonderfully acted Hollywood drama and one of the best of its type. Benjamin Franklin makes a cameo appearance.

June 24, 2013
25. *MARIE ANTOINETTE (2006/U.S., 123 min., color, historical drama/Columbia) DVD
Dir.: Sofia Coppola. Stars: Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman.
Coppola’s portrait of the ill-fated queen focuses on her pampered life within the palace, that of a bird in a gilded cage, but suffers from its distanced approach which avoids an emotional attachment to the subject.

June 25, 2013
26. KILLER CONSTABLE (1980/HK, 92 min., color, kung fu adventure/Shaw Bros.) R3 DVD (in Mandarin with English subs.)
Dir.: Kuei Chih-hung. Star: Chen Kuan Tai.
The robbery of the Imperial court’s royal treasury in China in 1876 leads to the “killer constable” being assigned to find and kill the robbers, leading to the revelation of high-level treachery in court. Attempt to make a more serious and moody kung fu drama means less fun. The Empress Dowager makes a cameo appearance.

June 27, 2013
27. *RED LION (1969/Japan, 116 min., color, historical drama) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
Dir.: Kihachi Okamoto. Star: Toshiro Mifune.
Mifune plays a slightly nutty peasant who joins an advance troop of the Imperial Army and returns to his hometown, after ten years, to try and shake off the influence of the Shogun before the Imperial troops get there. With his Red Lion clip-on "mane," he becomes like a god to the villagers and takes on the local bosses--to comic effect. Quite an unusual look at life in a backwater village during that turbulent period in Japan when the Shogun's power was waning and the Meiji Emperor was about to take control.

28a. *“Rose of Versailles” (1979/Japan, color, historical drama/TV series) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
#9: The Sun Sets, the Sun Rises
#10: The Beautiful Devil, Jeanne
King Louis XV dies and the Dauphin, Marie Antoinette's husband, becomes King Louis XVI.

28b. “Animated Classics of Japanese Literature” (1986/Japan, 48 min., color, drama) VHS (in Japanese with English subs.
“The Tale of Shunkin” based on a story by Junichiro Tanizaki
“Friendship” based on a story by Saneatsu Mushanokoji
TV episodes based on Japanese stories about young love during the Meiji era.

June 29, 2013
29. GATE OF HELL (1953/Japan, 89 min., color, historical drama/Daiei) DVD (in Japanese with English subs.)
Dir.: Teinosuke Kinugasa. Stars: Machiko Kyo, Kazuo Hasegawa.
Only the second color film made in Japan and the first to have a historical setting. This was awarded an Honorary Oscar as Best Foreign Language Film and also won an Oscar for Costume Design. In the 12th century, a samurai hero is asked what reward he wants and demands the wife of one of the court nobles. A deceptively simple storyline is given elegant treatment aided by stunning use of color.

30. SHAOLIN MANTIS (1978/Hong Kong, 100 min., color, kung fu drama/Shaw Bros.) DVD (in Mandarin with English subs.)
Dir.: Lau Kar Leung. Stars: David Chiang, Wong Hang Sau.
The director died a few days ago so I decided to watch one of his best films. This is a tale of a Qing spy in 17th century China who infiltrates a household of Ming holdouts and marries the patriarch’s granddaughter and then has to fight his way out, with her at his side. A great kung fu movie.

June 30, 2013
31. *INSIDE THE FORBIDDEN CITY (1963/Hong Kong, 98 min., color, historical drama/Shaw Bros.) R3 DVD (in Mandarin with English subs.) Dir.: Kao Li. Star: Ivy Ling Po.
Convoluted story done in the “Huangmei Opera” style, in which much of the dialogue is sung. In the court of the Sung Dynasty emperor (11th century China), one concubine’s jealousy leads to another’s exile and the abandonment of her baby, who winds up in a relative’s household, gets adopted by the Empress and eventually becomes Emperor. A traveling judge hears the story from the exiled concubine and agrees to plead her case.

-X- Tora Tora Tora, 1941
-X- The Hurt Locker, 2000s Iraq
-X- Ran, 1500s Japan
-X- Django, ~1866 (also Keoma is 1867ish, Unforgiven is circa 1880; Searchers around same time; 13 Assassins mid-1800s)
-X- The Last of the Mohicans, 1757
-X- Centurion, ~100s

WHERE

-X- Centurion, Roman Empire ["Picts" are in modern day northern United Kingdom, I think?]

WHO
FOLKLORE & FAITH
-X- Film about prehistory [it's probably best to look for a documentary here] - Cave of Forgotten Dreams

-X- Film about Religious Minority - Gandhi

-X- War film that focuses on civilians - Salon Kitty
-X- Film about war criminals - The Devil's Double (Uday Hussein)

Watch 5 movies that take place during different wars.
-X- Tora Tora Tora, World War II (also Das Boot, Saving Private Ryan, Patton, Salon Kitty)

WESTERN
-X- Watch at least five of seven Western Subgenres - taken from Frank Gruber's list on Wikipedia
-X- The Union Pacific story - Keoma (plague intended to clear a town for railroad).
--- The ranch story. (The plot concerns threats to the ranch from rustlers or large landowners attempting to force out the proper
owners.)
--- The empire story. (The plot might involve building up a ranch empire or an oil empire from scratch, a classic rags-to-riches plot.)
-X- The revenge story. (The plot often involves an elaborate chase and pursuit, but it may also include elements of the classic
mystery story.) - Unforgiven
-X- The cavalry and Indian story. (The plot revolves around taming the wilderness for white settlers.) - The Searchers
-X- The outlaw story. - Django, Four of the Apocalypse
-X- The marshal story. - Unforgiven (The lawman and his challenges drive the plot.)

--- Western movie with a direct connection to a TV show, since Westerns were part of TV's golden age before the Space Generation
-X- Neo-Western - The Hi-Lo Country (i.e., a Western set in more contemporary times, to demonstrate the genre is still alive)

ZEITGEIST WILD CARDS
Because an argument can be made that some movies which fall outside the "obvious" scope of our challenge really are consistent with its spirit, you're permitted to watch and check off up to three optional movies of your choice.
--- Zeitgeist Wild Card #1
--- Zeitgeist Wild Card #2
--- Zeitgeist Wild Card #3
