Maybe it's not a big deal, we won't know until ME3 comes out. But this whole DLC thing is exposing a tension of what exactly a videogame text is.
Arrival had enough story to fill two senteces of dialogue. Three tops.

Spoiler:
Shepard crashed an asteroid into a Mass Effect Relay that the reapers were gonna use to speed up their arrival in Citadel space to just a few days. Millions of Batarians in the system died due to the resulting explosion.

You won't miss much if you don't play it.

I haven't played any of the ME2 DLC yet (though owning all but The Arrival thanks to sales). I plan to get to all of them eventually.

If I like a game, I have no problem paying for and playing through the DLC. If the DLC is required to understand the sequel, then the writers fail at setting the stage during the sequel. Since we know there will be an introduction in ME3 for people that didn't play ME2 (like ME2 had for ME1-less people). I would imagine that would, at least, roughly cover the essential story points, DLC or otherwise.
I swear I read in another summary of the Game Informer article that this would be the case.

They said there was gonna be an interactive comic like the PS3 version of ME2.

Mass Effect 3 Delayed to 2012

Electronic Arts is delaying the release of Mass Effect 3 into early 2012.

Casey Hudson, Executive Producer of the Mass Effect series, made the announcement through the game's official Facebook page.

"Mass Effect 3 will be released in the first three months of 2012. The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone's expectations."

Do it right rather than do it fast.

Lesson learned from Dragon Age 2 perhaps?

Well now my expectations are that it'll exceed my expectations. There's no way they can succeed now.

I haven't played it, but it certainly seemed to be less well-received than the first game.

Anyway, I never expected ME3 to come out in 2011, and I'd rather wait a few months and get a better finished product.

Obviously, you are entitled to your opinion, and you are not alone, but the general consensus is that DA2 was disappointing.

Re: Mass Effect 3

Normally I'd be dissappointed by this news, but with Skyrim coming in November, I have no problem with it. Saves me the trouble of having to decide which one to tackle first.

Re: Mass Effect 3

Since they apparently decided against it for DA2, hopefully they remembered they have to do some actual QA testing and have adjusted the schedule accordingly.

Skyrim is the one and only reason I'm not disappointed by this news. More time to play it!

Plus, now some other games have a chance at GOTY awards.

Re: Mass Effect 3

Yeah, I'll also be dick-deep into Skyrim, so I actually would prefer to wait for a more polished ME3.

LOL at people assuming SKyrim won't get delayed as well.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! although with all the good stuff coming out this fall, that's probably the right call.

Bethesda doesn't have a track-record of delaying stuff - they tend to stick to their release-dates, and their buggy games are a testament to that. Also, the "11/11/11" release-date for Skyrim is a big part of the marketing.

Re: Mass Effect 3

I don't mind the delay if it's used to polish and properly QA the game.

Re: Mass Effect 3

Sounds like a good set of improvements/additions:

Spoiler:
* As well as gaining civilisation’s allegiance, you can lose them to the Reapers if you don’t play right, similarly to losing squadmates in the suicide mission.

* Your weapons have three upgrade slots -scope, barrel and grip, and you can change the colour and camouflage of weapons.
Spoiler:
* Cerberus and Husks will be main enemies, and Cerberus is divided into three main types of troops – heavy bruisers, medium and light.

* You may be able to get an eyepiece, like Garrus’s, that will allow non-sniper weapons to scope in further, which also hints at armour having more of an effect on gameplay.
* Bioware is going to announce something big at E3 – a lot of the gameplay features and more squadmates.

I wonder how/why
Spoiler:
Cerberus will turn against Shepard for those players who chose to side with the Illusive Man at the end of ME2.
