Hate to be one of those guys, but the "delta" symbol was, at the time Kirk was commanding the Enterprise in TOS, unique to the Enterprise. At that time each ship had their own symbol and the crewmembers all wore their own ship's symbol on the left side of their chest.

It wasn't until the movies that the delta became the Starfleet symbol.

Presumably this was a quiet retcon on Paramount's part, to give Star Trek its own symbol. I never recall it being mentioned in-universe anywhere that Starfleet adopted the Enterprise's Delta as its official symbol. (Never watched enough Enterprise to know if they carried the retcon to the prequel series or not.)

A lot of people are throwing that out, but it's turning out to be not quite true:

I have checked the occurences out with Mr. Roddenberry, who has reassured me that all Starship personnel wear the Starship emblem that we have established for our Enterprise Crew Members to wear.
Here's a link to a reddit thread with this, and I've seen it on other forums.

Yup. Originally there was supposed to be one emblem for starship crews, one for merchant marines, and another for starbase personnel, but the costume designer got confused and gave a different starship crew their own emblem.

If I remember correctly, the only other Constitution-class ship emblem we saw was on Matt Decker's uniform in "Doomsday Machine," (U.S.S. Constellation).

The Exeter's uniforms had a different logo in The Omega Glory and I believe The Defiant's uniforms had a unique logo in The Tholian Web.

Well, the original crew movies had the same emblem for ALL of Starfleet, so this is something I'm fine with. I mean, the Klingons no longer look like they did in the original series and no one has a problem with that.

Until it gets delayed again? They should just roll it out during the fall tv season.

That was finally explained in an episode of Enterprise as some kind of genetic engineering experiment gone awry.

And before that, the mostly accepted "fanon" was that the Klingon Empire was truly that: an empire, made up of multiple races that banded together under the name "Klingon".

Even setting aside the "smooth head" Klingons, we've seen numerous different kinds of head ridges on them over the years, so another design isn't really an issue for me.

My "fanon" was simply that Star Trek was a tv show made in the 1960s with a tv budget and special effects and make-up that were of their time. No explanation necessary. Trying to come up with some kind of elaborate explanation as to why they look different is like trying to explain why the computers on the enterprise are slow and clumsy by today's standards. It's just a product of its time.

In related news, we'll be getting a comprehensive Star Trek: DS9 documentary sometime next year, successfully crowdfunded to over 400% of its initial goal and completing all of its stretch goals. They even have enough money to re-master some clips in full HD. They have CBS' full support and pretty much everyone from the show is involved with the exception of Avery Brooks. Looking forward to seeing it!

I always thought he was normal age, 30s-40s? Am I missing something?
