Re: 2014 Emmy Discussion Thread
I'd like to say that it doesn't matter and it's just the Emmys, but I know this kind of thing can help or hurt a show's chances for survival.

That's why I'm glad Breaking Bad finally won Best Drama last year and why I'm rooting hard for Game of Thrones this year.

I don't know if it's Vera Farmiga, Tatiana Maslany, Keri Russell, Elizabeth Moss or someone else, but somebody deserved that spot that was taken by Claire Danes. How many times are you going to honor her for the same batshit crazy overacting performance?

The problem now is that there is too much perceived snubbing due to the competition of quality programs. Unless they give the award to two people or split the categories even more there's no way to make everyone happy.

There's also legacy and for the great shows, that's important. If John Hamm never wins as Don Draper, that's going to be the first thing everyone mentions about the show in the future. Whether Cranston wins 3 or 4 doesn't really mean too much -- frankly I can't even remember how many times Gandolfini won (but it wasn't enough). But if you never win for an iconic role, that's something that will be remembered and noted.

Yeah in Miniseries they seem to clean up although AHS probably wouldn't if it didn't play category fraud. Drama and Comedy though Sunny,Justified,The Americans,The Bridge,Terriers,The League not so much

As great as it is I imagine it would get no love like Orphan Black currently and Angel and Buffy in the past. They clearly have a genre bias and GOT only seems to avoid because it's a huge hit and HBO is a juggernaut.

I think Orphan Black is decent, and I agree that it's getting a lot of internet/geek love and can be considered overrated because of that... but I can't see how they would ignore Tatiana's performance. Her performance is a major reason I'm watching the show. She's playing clones and yet while I'm watching I keep forgetting it's all being done by the same actress - and it's not the makeup that's making me forget either. To me that really says something.
Say what you want about the Golden Globes, but at least they seem to be more on the 'pulse' of what most viewers enjoy.
DOWNTON ABBEY getting ANY nominations is a joke...that show has gone off the rails and is FAR from quality TV anymore.
With that in mind, I'm pulling for Matthew McConaughey and Billy Bob Thornton - two of the best performances on TV in two of the most original shows we've seen in a long, long time. So they'll both probably lose, right?

How was Sons of Anarchy not nominated? Probably could have qualified as for drama, comedy or even a musical series with all the damn montages.

I'm actually surprised Justified didn't get any nods, but this last season was far and away the worst of the series and was a chore to get through. Has Jere Burns or Walton Goggins ever been nominated?

Justified didn't deserve any nominations this year. Well, maybe worst southern accent by a guest actor.
Margo Martindale won for Mags in season 2. Goggins was nominated a few years ago.

Vera, definitely, and Freddy Highmore, especially after that final episode.
As for Longmire, my timing was off. Lou Diamond Phillips is doing awesome work this season, which would put him in contention for next year. I would root for him over Bailey Chase for supporting actor even though both are playing characters who are slowly going crazy. And the writing on Longmire is just fantastic. They've got about 5 concurrent plot lines and they are sewing them together masterfully.

I really don't get it. I enjoy Big Bang Theory and Modern Family as much as the next guy but MF was pretty bad this year and BBT is cliche sitcom fare. It's Always Sunny was leaps and bounds better than those shows this season.
