Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M

There are so many blockbusters coming out this fall that the studios will certainly try to take full advantage by giving big windows to all of them. 5 weeks is a long time though, I wonder what...

Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M

The purpose of early availability is not to cater to people who already purchase digital, but to entice those who don't.

Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M

It certainly does make a difference. The only test is to see how much bigger a difference it will make. Blu-ray is declining at a faster rate than DVD precisely because it does make a difference. ...

Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M

It's not that simple. Not everyone is bound to a particular format. Like you said, they just want to see the movie. And if it's available sooner, those that don't have format hangups will just buy...

Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M

I don't get what you are trying to say. Early availability for any format helps sales. It has been the case with digital. It's a big reason sales have increased as much as they have the last few...

Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M

Sure the catalog market is drying up, but with Blu-ray most sales are new release anyway and those will always sell.

That said, the studios are really pushing Digital HD (EST) and releasing movies...

Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M

I'm surprised The Pianist hasn't been released yet (in the U.S.). Probably some legal thing. That is probably the most popular and highly regarded movie not to get a release here (I think it has...

Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M

That's the whole point. The studio want to maximize digital sales and eventually get at least most sales in that direction. More profits.

Besides, it's easier for studios to have the digital...

Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M

No, digital rentals are under the VOD category. EST only includes video purchases (although I don't know if it's limited to only movies or TV shows, it probably includes all videos).

So there are...

Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M

True many people stream their purchased content, but I was trying to distinguish between subscription streaming and EST. The prevailing thought is that subscription streaming is getting all the...

Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M

Just to be clear, there is streaming and there are digital purchases. Streaming is similar to rentals, so clearly the studios don't prefer that to physical. However they do prefer digital purchases...

Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M

That's true. But there also has to be content owners (mostly from major studios) willing to license them out to these niche labels. One can't always take that for granted.

Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M

The drop in sales percentage is compared against itself and not against DVD.

Generally speaking Blu-ray sales in units are about 22 percent of DVD overall.

Of those that get released on both...

Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M

That's a pretty low definition of "doing fine", when the sales are down 16 percent for the year, which is even more than DVD.

I would say there are quite a few folks who still doesn't know...

Re: Article: Blu-Ray Producers Say Studios Should Shift Expectations About Physical M
