Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Sure why not? Nolan has a great grasp on turning movies into the equivalent of chess games, but he completely misses the boat on some fundamentals: passage of time, characters with actual...

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

For a director that is so keen on manipulating time, Nolan is really bad at portraying the passage of it in most of his movies. I agree with you on those two things, and most people who point at...

He's so talented all he has to do is fall asleep on his organ and bam, Oscar nomination.

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

In defense of that, the entire part of the film revolving around Affleck and Damon sort of made me cringe. So much didn't work.

Wasn't as bad in replay though.

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Oddly enough no not really, I did enjoy it, but it's pretty heavily flawed.

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Yeah that's a common issue with Nolan. He focuses on certain aspects to over explain and then leaves other details vague. Sometimes they're plotholes, sometimes they're just unexplained details.

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

The theft of the power cell from the drone to power the tractors is all I could think of. Presumably if that's what powers the massive combines, then surely smaller ones are used in regular...

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

It's been a few months since I've seen this but here's my shot in the dark.

Anything can be transmitted in morose code or hell, binary (but who knows binary off hand). But I'm pretty sure he was...

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Nothing, just being dumb with speculation. It isn't covered in any manner outside of mentioning the way time and space would be viewed by a fifth dimensional future us super being thing. I like being...

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Huh? Soil is finite and fertilizer doesn't fix everything. But it does ignore the fact we're doing some bad ass things indoors these days.

People pick at the weirdest shit with this movie. Mallet...

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Nope they weren't, but it was enough to get the imagination rolling for me. Frozen clouds, tidal waves and barren terrain was all it needed, happily devoid of giant monsters and goofy aliens. Had a...

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

I still think the future people caused the blight and needed to repair it to prevent their non-existence.

All I remember about this movie months later is how much I liked the visiting of the...

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Ultimately that detail didn't bother me much though it crossed my mind while it was happening. Them having a moment or not doesn't change the fact that Murph was going to die and Coop was going to...

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Ash likes posting extreme views, both very positive and very negative, as it stirs conversation that "it was alright" doesn't.

I don't think he actually sides one way or another with most movies...

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

They're different genres, Gravity is a survival pic in space, Interstellar is basically a space adventure movie.

Gravity had substantially better directing, Interstellar had a lot more ambition...

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Really? While there were definitely some horrible lines, I didn't think most of it was that bad, just a chunk of Michael Caine's lines and a few about love which were just brutally corny.

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Same here, but I'm glad it was only 1/4th of the movie and not the entire second half.

4K looked the same as the IMAX here, but I dunno, is IMAX 4K or is it two 2K?

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Which one adds unnecessary villains to the 3rd act of a 4 act structure? Or is that a Nolan original?

I mean, 2001 kind of did it with Hal, but that wasn't a Kubrick norm, and not nearly as on the...

I had no issues minus that one scene I mentioned previously. That said, what was his excuse for similar issues in Inception?

Re: Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

I always had a sense of where it was going, minus the blackhole -- wasn't sure what angle they were going to go with on that part. The one thing I really liked about the movie was it had interesting...
