Re: Heat (1995, D: Mann) S: Pacino, De Niro, Kilmer, Ashley Judd's "Great Ass"

I didn't catch this opening night as I was driving home for the holidays after completing my first semester of college. Caught it a few days afterward and loved it, mainly because I found out early in that day I had made the President's list for my first semester (not too hard considering the level of difficulty of the classes I took, but it seemed daunting a year earlier when I was still in high school)!
I too was perplexed that it didn't get any nominations, but at the time the only reviews I read were Rolling Stone magazine and USA Today and both loved it (this was before the days of RT when just about anyone could register themselves as a critic).

I also feel this was the last movie made by both Pacino and DeNiro where they still seemed like true movie star actors. After this everything seemed to turn into caricature roles for them both save for Ronin in 1998. Hopefully the Irishman will prove they still got it.

One of the most perfect scenes I've ever seen in a movie!
Great scene that stood out to me as well when I saw Heat in the theater.

A year or two later I changed TV channels to see the end of Heat on cable when a friend called me. I was listening to Moby's Everything is Wrong album and "God Moving Over the Face of the Waters" track was playing. While talking to my friend I realized that this Moby song played at the end of Heat and that it was virtually in synch between the CD and the movie on cable. Very surreal.

The Insider & Donnie Brasco were after Heat and IMO Pacino was good in both.

^ City Hall, Devil's Advocate, and Any Given Sunday rounded out the 90's for him. I've never seen City Hall, though.

You are not missing anything special with City Hall. I went to see at the theater back in the day and it was pretty slow and dull. Almost zero hamming it up from Pacino.

That is awesome

I remember seeing this opening night. Took my dad to see it actually -- I ended up seeing it in the theater 3 times (still have the ticket stubs).

1995 had 2 big movies for DeNiro that contended with one another. Casino and Heat - both clocking in at 3 hours. I'm pretty sure Casino was released first and Heat shortly thereafter. Box office suffered with the 3-hour runtime, but this movie has stood the test of time. Arguably the best in the genre.

Just looked at some of the comments I made when this thread was started about 14 years ago. Amazing to see some of the stuff I was wanting (I think there was eventually a 2 DVD deluxe set). I also seemed a little more upbeat and enthusiastic about life in general in my mid to late twenties than now.

I never saw what was so great about it. I'll have to revisit it one of these days to see if my opinion will change.

Has anyone gone back and watched Heat lately? Figured some folks would revisit it and then read the book/sequel that just came out this summer.

It’s been about a year since I watched the movie. It’s in my Top 5 all-time.

I’m about halfway through the new book now. I’m trying to envision it as a filmed sequel that Mann wants to do and I’m not seeing that it will work yet. I’ll finish the entire book before I make any judgements.

Ashley Judd in her 25-35 heyday was a real beauty triple threat. She checked all three boxes: Sexy, Beautiful, and Cute.
