And Manhunter is awesome. Way better than Red Dragon.

Manhunter is way better than Red Dragon because Red Dragon is basically a steaming pile.

Any reason why Mann chose to shoot the scene that way? Was it to maximize the final scene?
I was being slightly facetious when i posted but I was extremely unhappy with that deli scene.

Thwre was a bit of hype before this movie came out about how this was their first movie they actually filmed together and then Mann never actually has a scene in the movie with the two of them in the shot together.

Sure there is that one near the end but even that one isnt very good as the shot isnt very clear.

I still like Heat. But if we're talking about great Michael Mann films, there's only one. And that's The Insider.

If you were not satisfied by Heat you can watch the masterpiece Righteous Kill.
Lots of shots with them together.

Two legends not being in the same shot sinks it for you? Shot/reverse shot is a classical method of a conversation, very commonplace in the modern era, probably thanks to TV conventions. In any case, if you think about this scene and the themes of this movie, it works (I don't take credit for this): these guys are mirror images of each other. If memory serves, we see them cut back and forth and they are at the opposite side of the frame. Conventional technique but it holds up thematically.

Re: the ultimate HEAT discussion thread

I just watched LA Takedown on youtube for the first time... I knew Heat was a remake, but didn't realize how similar the two are.. I've always liked Alex McArthur but the guy playing the Pacino part is terrible...

Perhaps not Mann's best film, but certainly his most iconic and his signature movie. Though I've always thought as an action fan that the bank shoot out sequence was a little overrated.

Re: the ultimate HEAT discussion thread

LA TAkedown has been on youtube for 10 months, I know there are a lot of fans here that would be interested, I have nothing to gain by posting it, but if a mod sees it unfit, I have no problem with removing it... There is an ad before it, so that means youtube finds it legit and rights holders are getting paid... It was released on dvd in other regions.. Should have been a dvd extra.

Heat (1995, D: Mann) S: Pacino, De Niro, Kilmer, Ashley Judd's "Great Ass"

Master criminal Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) is trying to control the rogue actions of one of his men, while also planning one last big heist before retiring. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Hanna (Al Pacino) attempts to track down McCauley as he deals with the chaos in his own life, including the infidelity of his wife (Diane Venora) and the mental health of his stepdaughter (Natalie Portman). McCauley and Hanna discover a mutual respect, even as they try to thwart each other's plans.
I did a search but never found an official thread for this movie. If there is one, please either delete or merge.

Saw this in the theater on opening night. I had no idea what the running time was. At around the two hour mark I could tell the film was far from over. And I loved it. I was like, "this thing is modern and stylish and a genre picture, but it's a fucking epic!"

Never got a chance to see it in theaters, but since its release on VHS, have probably watched 6+ times (most recently last week). Always wondered why it didn't receive a single Academy Award nomination. Looking at some of the early reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, there were some tepid reviews, so I guess it's gained more respect over the years?

Yep. The first cassette ended at the conclusion of the cafe scene.

I actually used that scene for a speech class; can't remember the exact topic, but it had to do with communication and using some form of media to use in your speech, so I chose that scene (not only because it's fantastic but padded the time I had since I hated public speaking ). Got something like a B, the teacher really liked the scene, so thank you Mann, Pacino and DeNiro, helped me pass that class!

Great movie! One of the best of the 90s, and Michael Mann's best to date.

I saw it opening day and was blown away. Love most of his films, but IMO Michael Mann's trifecta : Heat, The Insider & Thief.

This was just "remastered" for another BD release. Hopefully it comes out on 4K within the next year or two.

Re: Heat (1995, D: Mann) S: Pacino, De Niro, Kilmer, Ashley Judd's "Great Ass"

Saw it in 1995 and loved it. I can't believe it has been 22 years! It could have been a typical crime thriller but Michael Mann elevated this movie by getting inside each character and the cause/effect their job had on their relationships.

Pacino was a man who sacrificed his job for every relationship/marriage, yet he was the only who cared for his step-daughter (Natalie Portman).

DeNiro was the opposite as his motto was, "Never have an attachment you can't walk out on in 30 seconds." Great movie that holds up.

One of the most amazing acting scenes I've ever watched in a movie was the scene when DeNiro was driving in his car to getaway and he was contemplating turning around to kill Waingro. The scene contained absolutely NO DIALOGUE but DeNiro effortlessly shows you his internal struggle with his pride and conscience.

One of the most perfect scenes I've ever seen in a movie!
