I thought this was excellent, one of my favorite movies of the year so far.

Vaughn was great in this. Absolutely believable. I would totally prefer him over most of the geriatric action stars we've been seeing in action movie franchises lately. I'd follow a TAKEN or EQUALIZER or JACK REACHER-type franchise with him. At the very least, he should be the villain in the next Expendables movie. And how about a western?

What I especially liked about this movie was the careful attention to the slow, excruciating, monotonous and sometimes horrific routine of prison life, first in the minimum security prison and then in the maximum security one. We see what it's like to be processed by dickwads and then have to suffer one small humiliation after another and then the more degrading and torturous punishments offered up in the next prison. The film focuses on his experience and how he responds to it. Granted, it becomes another contrived action melodrama in its final stage, although more clever than most, but the build-up was so expertly crafted, we're able to forgive a lot by the end.

And it was all shot on Staten Island. Look up the locations on IMDB. The first prison was an actual correctional facility (now closed) and the second was an old fort with a long history (Fort Wadsworth). And the small town scenes were shot on actual residential streets on Staten Island, which is the closest thing in New York City to a small town.

I liked it, but I liked Bone Tomahawk more.
Looking forward to whatever Zahler does next.

Now that I think of it, the gore FX in that movie were top notch compared to the Herschel Gordon Lewis oddness that appears in BRAWL. Intentional, maybe?

I saw it and don't see why everybody was excited about this.

Vince Vaugh entering Nicolas Cage straight to DVD territory?

The director in the fanchast on the blu-ray extras would not reveal the reason for the cross tattoo on Vince's neck since he does not want to explain his metaphors. Prick

Watched tonight on Amazon and thought it was excellent.
Very different (a good thing) from the normal fare.
Vaughn struts his stuff with conviction.

Good writing and directing by Zahler...better than BT in my opinion.
Looking forward to his 3rd film: Dragged Across Concrete.

1080p video was superb.

I’m curious about your comment about the video quality. You streamed this on Amazon correct?

I have amazon. And I have a 1080 display. I find the picture quality on everything I stream to be just average. About as good as a dvd. And the audio on Amazon I find especially weak. Their 5.1 soundtracks sound tiny and compressed as hell. What do you watch on?

What device are you using? Amazon seems to vary the most wildly from platform to platform for me.

Amazon takes longest to get to hd. Even with pretty good connection. Maybe more than minute sometimes, but still gets there and never looks SD...

I am also on the Amazon bandwagon. Found the sound horrible and picture quality would vary quite a bit. I finally just dropped it.

I have a Sony 940C that I stream thru.
Also, have the latest Firebox as back-up.

I have never had the problems you are referring to.
Streaming quality has always been great....from UHD to HD.

Have you checked your internet connection speed?
You may be getting throttled by your provider (it's not unusual).

Amazon (and NF) will automatically down-rez the video and audio if your speed is not high enough or display advanced enough to handle the native feed.
I would check that stuff out first.

All I can tell you is my streams look great.
Audio is not quite at a lossless level, but it's pretty damn close.

I watched BRAWL on Amazon on my desktop computer monitor (about 19 inches) and it looked and sounded fine. When it's a good print from an established source, it can look as good as a DVD.

I've tried streaming Amazon through multiple devices (gaming consoles, TV's, blu ray players, etc.) and the only real success I've had is through phones and Roku devices. Even their own fucking streaming sticks suck.

Internet speed aside, streaming quality is determined by the hardware in the chain...ALL of the hardware in the chain.
The weakest video link in the chain is what ya end up with.

I have a PS4 that I watch mostly everything on in terms of streaming. It always looks great. The only other services I use my Apple TV for to stream are FilmStruck and HBO.

Same here.

I have compared my DirecTV HD feed with the streaming services of the same program/movie (like for like).
Streaming always wins easily in video quality.
It also can be very close to BD.

The folks above who are having trouble must have something going on with their equipment/settings that is somehow different than mine.

Brawl in Cell Block 99 was actually better than I thought it'd be, even though some of the sound effects was laughable and I couldn't really see Vince Vaughn as a badass. I still felt like Shotcaller was the better prison film between the two though.

Love Zahler as a director. Every time I rewatch one of his movies. I always do a search to see if he has anything in the works. nothing right now.

Spoiler:
Why was his "boss" putting the blame on him for losing the drug money? He didn't rat him out when he got arrested, he told the other 2 guys to dump the drugs because somehow he knew the cops were going to show up (which I also didn't understand how he figured that out). They kidnap his wife, and threaten to amputate the babies limbs if he doesn't murder somebody, but the person they want murdered never existed? They just wanted him in that specific prison for what, just to torture him? And how'd the boss end up in prison himself? A lot of questions, I know.

Just watched again for the 3rd time. Vaughn plays it perfectly.

I still need to rewatch a few scenes as I feel Zahler is a very clever director, which I really like.
Found out about Chris Bridge on another forum. I'll use spoiler tags, just in case someone wants to try to figure it out on their own.
Spoiler:
For a long long time prison guards have told inmates if you misbehave you’ll meet Mr. Bridge. Which means death.

Mr. Bridge is prison slang for death.
It was obvious Bradley did not know this. Putting the word Chris Bridge as a name must confuse the inmates in red leaf.

He's not wrong. The fights were terrible.

I'm guessing this movie was meant to be a comedy where everyone played it straight. Either way, I don't get all the praise. The only part I liked was the "red, white, and burrito" line.

He had a film based on one of his novels in pre-production towards the end of last year, but it got shut down due to lack of financing.

Not sure what kind of fight choreography you're expecting with Vince Vaughn? He's not John Wick. He's a bruiser. He's very much like the Kingpin. I think I even said earlier in this thread that if D'Onofrio didn't come back, Vaughn would have made a decent Kingpin for Daredevil.

He was slow and unconvincing. Even as a bruiser, he didn't project strength. In fact, no one in the flick came across as competent in a fight. I did laugh when he hugged a guy to death (I know we were supposed to believe he broke that guy's back but it looked like a weak hug instead).
