That bothered me as well. The mom doesn't really matter. I'd guess that she probably had it harder than Jor in letting the kid go. You know... Cuz she gave birth to him. Maybe would mean less in the plot we've got but emotionally that probably would have added something.

Why kill off Pa Kent at all? There are iterations of the mythos where Pa and Ma are still alive later in Clarks life. It would have been far more interesting to have Pa survive then in flashbacks see how awful the world gets, and he gradually understands that maybe he was wrong in keeping Clark hidden. He then encourages his son to be the hero the world needs further bolstered by Jor Els encouragement. Boom. A hero is born with a background in why the world needs him and a bit of character development for Pa Kent.
Man of Steel utterly failed in this critical scene by making Clark indecisive and stupid. But today's audiences apparently want their heroes dumb and prone to lapses in moral decision-making. It "humanizes" them.

Re: Man of Steel (Snyder, 2013) — The Reviews Thread (Part II)
Finally got around to watching this for only the second time last night.
I have to be honest- I did enjoy it a lot more this time.
Some things were still poorly thought out, and pretty much all of the film's failures are failures at the script level. The performances, production design, sp fx, etc were all competent to well above average.
I take back what I said about the visuals. I'm still not much of a fan of the over processed, hyper contrast, blue/orange look- but it's hard to deny that it looks like every penny is up on the screen.
If only the screenplay had gotten the same loving attention that all the film's visuals did, this could have been the greatest comic book/superhero movie ever made.
In fact, so much of the film struck me as so well executed this time, that it makes the relatively few missteps that more glaring and annoying. It's mostly just a matter of a few degrees that would have made a big difference.
On the subject of the Pa Kent death scene, the argument in the car, prior to JK's death, was brief but solid. It's a shame that sequence jumps the shark at the end because that tends to overshadow what was a nice character moment between the two.
Definitely don't regret dropping $20 on it.

The death of Clark's parents are a powerful teaching tool that no matter how great his powers, Clark can't always save his most cherished loved ones from death. It's meant to be an instructive moment in how he forms his superheroic identity as an adult, separating him from childish notions about saving every person on the planet.

I still maintain if Pa had been alive and saw how the world was going down the toilet and realizes that the world needed his son would have been a greater motivation for Clark to become Superman and given more depth to Pa than the caricature that was given to us.

While I did find it a lot more entertaining the second time around, there's no escaping how much of the film is just so f%#$ing foolish verging on stupid.
But like the lead, it's swaggering and cool looking so not guilty I guess.

some movies make good use of it. For what MoS was trying to do, it didn't rock it.
King Kong, Jackson's, did fine with it. SW and other films work it well but it all depends on the tone and frame of mind for the film to make proper use of it.

To each his own. I hate it in every movie I hear it in. The only clever use of it was in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and I still hated hearing it.

Yeah, Nostalgia Critic works best in small doses. A 50 minute video is far too much.

Re: Man of Steel (Snyder, 2013) — The Reviews Thread (Part II)
It bothers me however that at 38 minutes into the video Nostalgia critic claims that Zod vows to destroy Superman at any cost. What actually happens is that Zod vows to destroy the Earth and its people. There's plenty to criticize about this movie so I don't see why he had to make shit up just to lay the blame of the wanton destruction on Superman.
But I agree with his point 41 minutes into the video that they totally screw up the Zod death by basically ignoring it mere moments after we witness it. That's my problem with the movie. I enjoyed it but it could have been so much better and the way it flip-flops (particularly during those final moments) is really problematic. Great idea (Zod's demise) but poor execution (sudden nonchalant drone destruction followed by a happy ending).

The ending wasn't the only thing that was poorly executed. About the only positive thing I can say about Man of Steel is the soundtrack. Hans Zimmer delivered. Everything else was a cluster fuck of baffling events.

When I was watching the special features footage over the weekend, it really boggles me they did so much color correction on the film. Seeing the BTS footage next to the movie, especially the one in the desert when Kal turns himself in for the first time and then when he gets picked up by Faora, the colors are sooo much richer and his cosume really pops out in the midst of the bland desert. But in the movie, everything's all drab and dour and muted.
