R rating on a film that LOOKED to be targeted at a younger audiance who might not have been the 24 target audiance. mixed in with one hell of a crowded weekend... or something else.

Sucks that it bombed. I really enjoyed the movie. I bet it'll be one of those movies that will play over and over on cable (e.g. MADE) and will get its following that way..cuz once you see Elisha Cuthbert..I don't see how you could turn the channel.

One problem IMO, when I saw the trailer for "Girl next Door" I didn't understand what the movie was tring to be... is it a wacky teen comedy like American Pie, it is a serious coming of age film, a chick flick? I have no idea.

the film is not a wacky american pie movie but is being marketed as such, which is likely the problem. it is more of a coming of age/romantic comedy, but i think people get way caught up in the whole porn star aspect of it and expect a raunchy sex comedy (and the marketing makes it seem like that), which it isn't.
nudity would not have enhanced the gross too much; she shows some skin and there is some nudity in the film, but it's not that big a deal
saw it again yesterday, love this film.

This was rated 14A in Canada, meaning you only need to be 14 to see it, and it was #3 at the box office here last week. Perhaps if it was rated this way in the US it would have done better.
Or maybe all the American kids bought tickets for The Passion and snuck into this instead.

I didn't know who she was until I saw the vid in the mature forum. I think the R rating and common knowledge she did not go nude in this movie really hurt it's chances.

That's pretty pathetic if people will go to a movie based on the sole fact of the main star's nudity IMO

I saw Girl Next Door today. It was good for that kind of movie. Solid, but not amazing. Elisha Cuthbert looked exceptionally hot. I had problems with some of the directorial and editing choices, but I guess those are minor quibbles.
Fox really did a terrible job of marketing this film. It felt nothing like the movie they were advertising.

I did want to add, however, that the music in the movie was fantastic. I expected the usual mix of bad emo bands but the film opened with "Under Pressure," the second song in the film is by Elliott Smith, and Elisha Cuthbert's entrance comes complete with a song by Echo And The Bunnymen, of all bands. I was consistently impressed by the musical choices in the film, even if the style lacked in other areas.

Yeah, Fox knows spending any more money on this is like throwing objects into a black hole, hoping you'll plug it up. If they release some unrated version on DVD I'd rent it, though.
