That's moot. The camera system that Kingsman was shot on doesn't really have much more to give, resolution-wise.

Why so? It still has more than a 2k camera, doesn't it?

Even if they "went back to the source" (in other words, the raw 4K "negative," they would still have to scale up the FX shots from the DI, wouldn't they? Plus, wasn't all of the color-timing and post-production dome at 2K in the DI? If they went back to the source, wouldn't they have to redo pretty much everything?

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

There's a post on AVS today where someone compared the UHD and regular Blu-ray editions of The Martian and claims that the only differences are in color and contrast, but (he insists) zero visible difference in resolution.
And the lack of 3D makes the color and contrast differences a wash anyways.

Again, I'm not passing judgment here. I don't have a UHD display. I haven't seen this for myself. Just passing along someone else's first impression.

I think it's more likely the result of different color and contrast grading. Even without an HDR display, the UHD transfer should still look different than the Blu-ray transfer just due to the different grading. Pumped-up contrasts can create the perception of a sharper picture.
You are probably correct about there no being more detail. I wasn't watching The Martian though. But the difference isn't simply having pumped up contrasts creating the perception of a sharper picture. The picture is fuller with greater saturation and deeper blacks. Maybe the HDR grading is responsible for some of that, but I think the higher bit rate has a lot to do with it as well.

A couple of crude cell phone photos, FWIW. The Blu-ray is from the Oppo (Sony65X900A picture settings are the same for both players). Obviously there isn't enough resolution in the pics themselves to reveal any differences in that regard, but it should give you some idea of color and contrast differences (which could partially be attributed to being in different players with different settings).

Got my Best Buy order in this afternoon in the mail. Interestingly The Scorch Trials has the commentary track on both discs

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

My primary concern with the Ultra HD Blu-ray format is that once these discs start coming out that the studios will start releasing barebones blu-ray discs and withhold the bonus content for UHDBR.

The same thing happened to DVD not long after blu-ray discs started coming out.

And then, when 3D BR was introduced, there were a handful of special editions that were 3D BR exclusives like The Wolverine, POTC On Stranger Tides, Prometheus, and the Transformers Dark of the Moon.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Well since there was never an official roll out date, I think the digital argument will be valid - in about a year, if we're seeing the same slow traction then that's a different story. But anywhere there's a $ to be made, the studios will take a stab at it even with digital releases. I expect the same type of studio reception to a lesser degree as when blu's first came out. Like Paramount never getting off their ass to really release a big volume. We'll see new 4k banners with the same slate of movies we've seen in the past, much like Sony releasing Professional, Fifth Element, Dracula, etc at the same time.

Also keep in mind, 4k will do favors for the newer movies. Catalog's wouldn't seem to be a great fit (I doubt we'll see boutique labels like Twilight Time get into this), save for the classics that have been restored in 4k like Lawrence of Arabia.

It's going to be very interesting how catalogs come out on UHD. Not only the amount of movies but how many will have HDR. I read that Lawrence of Arabia is one a 25 catalogs that Sony is regrading for HDR, so that doesn't bode well for those just wanting the 'correct' version in the best possible quality.

I've subjected myself to the other two, so why not make it three? It's the curse of being a lifelong fan of the comics.

The digital copies are for UltraViolet and iTunes, and I don't think either service supports 4K yet.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Ultraviolet has some UHD flicks, actually. On Vudu, I see Mad Max: Fury Road, Edge of Tomorrow, Pan, Our Brand is Crisis, and... a few more. So it's definitely possible. Oddly, it looks like none of the titles that have UHD discs have UHD digital copies (at least on Vudu...)

edit: unless Vudu's "UHD" is completely incompatible with Ultraviolet. It's kind of hard to tell, since Vudu makes it look like it's all one catalog. I have no idea...

edit2: for whoever is curious, here's everything Vudu has available in UHD: http://www.vudu.com/movies/#featured/12434

Fox is being equally silent about 'The Peanut's UHD audio specs - but I'm a 100% sure, it wont include it's original theatrical Atmos mix either, but only be DTS-HD MA 7.1 - like all the rest of the UHD releases.

Their first releases on Blu-ray were pretty much bare-bones. Fox is going to double dip all of these titles for the audio track.

Not upscaled from 2K the way a bunch of these early releases are.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

I don't know what the @#$% Fox is up to, but the back of the The Peanuts Movie states "immersive audio" / Dolby Atmos --- maybe Fox can rectify 'The Revenant' and include it's Atmos mix.
