Several of the titles including the Marx Bros. A Night in Casablanca and Elia Kazan's Baby Doll and Scorsese's Who's that Knocking at my Door? are not owned by Warners but was licensed by the company. It seems likely that they are just letting the rights lapse.

Gone are the days of of the continual classic Warner DVD releases. I think some of these will hit the dust for good, but the worthwhile ones will be re-released eventually.
If certain releases didn't sell well circa 2003-05, I doubt they are selling better these days. These may just disappear until a market for them re-emerges, who knows how long that may be. But of course that market will likely not be traditional DVD, possibly Blu-Ray,Warner Archive or online download.

Paramount cleaning house? I am not really sure why the following Paramount release got posted as discontinued this last week. It all could be related to the following:
Paramount Pictures registered a loss of almost $150m in the first half of this year. Paramount fills long-empty home entertainment slot It may just be a readjustment with some of the titles coming back in a few months. This week MGM & Fox are quietly un-discontinuing titles they discontinued in May and June this year. So take most of the following with some grains of salt (at least until the water settles).

That looks like the rest of the Paramount catalog that had not gone out of print. No need for a press release. Here's the breaking news: DVD is dead. We'll see more such lists in the future. It's seems the Blu-ray is quite the success for the studios' strategy to kill DVD and make us buy everything again on BR.

These titles aren't discontinued. Check Mike's "Movie Mayhem" page and look at the titles more closely. They all have 3/4 different "releases" with different UPC codes. While certain UPC codes were discontinued, just about all these films still have one or multiple UPC's that are "out". (ie. not discontinued.)
Certainly it looks like Paramount decided to streamline their home video unit a bit but don't think for a minute any of these titles are discontinued with out researching a bit more on Mike's page. I only came across 2 on the list (out of the one's I've checked) which are legit. discontinued : HUD and STALOG 17. Both of these titles are ripe for new "Centennial" releases, so I'm not overly concerned nor surprised. |
