Re: Hard Case Crime, Part 4

Dan, whatever works. If it takes paper and ink to make a book's magic accessible, I'd say that's fine. For myself, I've found it didn't take long before an eReader seemed as natural as a printed book. But ultimately it seems to me that it's the words that matter, more than how we receive them.

Re: Hard Case Crime, Part 4

An aside, but looks like Titan Books (publisher of HCC) will be reissuing the Matt Helm series in 2013. I figure fans of HCC may be interested to know this. Hopefully they come packaged with some good cover art.

The Return of Matt Helm
By Titan Books On 13 12 2011

"Donald Hamilton has brought to the spy novel the authentic hard realism of Dashiell Hammett; and his stories are as compelling, and probably as close to the sordid truth of espionage, as any now being told." —New York Times

London, U.K. – December 9, 2011 – Titan Books announced today that beginning in 2013, they will reissue the original Matt Helm® spy thrillers written by Donald Hamilton, starring the famed counter-agent whose career included 27 novels spanning more than three decades, four films, and a network television series.

The first Matt Helm® novel, Death of a Citizen, was released in 1960, just two years after publication of Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale—which hadn’t yet caught on in the United States. Otto Penzlernoted, “Whereas Bond was a sophisticate who knew wine, expensive cars, and tuxedos, Helm lived much of the time in the American Southwest, drove a pickup truck, and wore flannel shirts.” The novel introduced a man in his mid-thirties, 6’4” and intelligent, who had been a military assassin eliminating Nazis during World War II.

“Helm is about as credible a figure as one can find in the espionage genre.” —The New Republic

Hamilton’s novels were known for a gritty realism as Helm hunted (and killed) foreign agents and other enemies of the United States. When asked to describe his character, Matt Helm, Don replied "He's a nice guy, he just happens to kill people for a living." The action was methodical, even brutal, and the series quickly attracted an avid following. The books sold more than 20,000,000 copies worldwide before disappearing from bookstore shelves.

“These novels were among the best spy thrillers ever published,” said Nick Landau, Publisher of Titan Books and CEO of the Titan Publishing Group. “We’re thrilled to partner with the estate of Donald Hamilton, enabling us to bring them back into print and show readers what they’ve been missing all these years.”

“Helm is a genuinely tough and tough-minded protagonist… your reading diet lacks essential vitamins if you overlook him.” —New York Times

“The appearance of a new Matt Helm story is always good news.” —Chicago Tribune

“This series by Donald Hamilton is the top-ranking American secret agent fare, with its intelligent protagonist and an author who consistently writes in high style. Good writing, slick plotting and stimulating characters, all tartly flavored with wit” —Book Week

“With Matt Helm, Donald Hamilton helped start the spy adventure genre. I welcome the reissue of these books so that readers can experience this mythic hero." —David Morrell, New York Times bestselling author of Murder as Fine Art

“Fast, tightly written, brutal, and very good…” —Milwaukee Journal

Re: Hard Case Crime, Part 4

Had kind of a weird one today. I had ordered Shooting Star/Spiderweb by Robert Block along with seven other HCC books and Amazon sent me an email saying they weren't able to fulfill the order because they couldn't get the book from their supplier. The other tittles delivered with no issues.

Re: Hard Case Crime, Part 4

Sorry for the weird/bad experience, Dan. From time to time Amazon will run out of copies of one or another of our books and it'll take a few weeks for things to filter through the system and for new copies to get printed (if necessary) and shipped to their warehouse. I imagine that's what happened in this case. As far as I know, there's no plan to allow the Bloch book to go out of print. (I'm sure it will happen for some of our books at some point -- no publisher keeps every book they've ever published in print forever. But at the moment the only one of our books that's formally out of print is THE COLORADO KID.)

Re: Hard Case Crime, Part 4

Oh, and as long as I'm visiting this site and posting, I suppose I may as well mention that our next new title -- THE COMEDY IS FINISHED by Donald Westlake -- will be in stores one week from today. It's almost certainly the last unpublished Westlake novel anyone will ever find, and early reviewers have been very generous with their praise, only it's not generous exactly, since the book deserves it. It's in hardcover, so those of you who only like our books when they're in paperback will have to wait till next year to get it that way -- but for any of you who are Westlake fans and willing to add a hardcover to your collection, we'd be delighted if you got yourself a copy.

Re: Hard Case Crime, Part 4

Charles, I have been really out of the loop on what has been going on since HCC was on hiatus.

Comedy Is Finished is a hard cover and only available that way at this time, but why is Blood on the Mink only available as paperback and not hard cover according to Amazon?

Were these originally going to be hard cover going forward but then Titan changed their minds or what?

Re: Hard Case Crime, Part 4

No sweat, Charles, not your guys' fault. Another weird one yesterday though. Came home to find an email from Amazon saying my card was declined for my copy of The Comedy is Finished. I called my bank and everything is in order including fundage. Resubmitted and hopefully it will go through now.

No -- we never planned to do all new books as hardcovers first. The plan was always that we'd launch a book in hardcover first only if it was an especially high-profile title (such as our first-ever original novel by Lawrence Block, or an undiscovered unpublished novel by Donald Westlake or James M. Cain). Other than that, the plan has always been to do paperback originals, just as we've always done.

And we expect to bring out pb editions of the ones we do in hardcover the year after the hardcover appears.

Re: Hard Case Crime, Part 4

Hell, we wrote six of the things in 18 months -- that seemed to be enough to satisfy anyone's appetite for a good long while. (Judging by the sales figures, for one thing. Though some of the credit for that has to go to Dorchester Publishing, which was in the process of self-destructing at the time.)

I'm very fond of the Hunt books, and Hunt as a character, and I'd like to bring him and them back at some point, but it's not likely to be too soon...

Re: Hard Case Crime, Part 4

coming in August ...

“Bold, innovative, and thrilling—The Twenty-Year Death crackles with suspense and will keep you up late.”
—Stephen King

THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BOOK LIKE THE TWENTY-YEAR DEATH

A breathtaking first novel written in the form of three separate crime novels, each set in a different decade and penned in the style of a different giant of the mystery genre.

1931—
The body found in the gutter in France led the police inspector to the dead man’s beautiful daughter—and to her hot-tempered American husband.

1941—
A hardboiled private eye hired to keep a movie studio’s leading lady happy uncovers the truth behind the brutal slaying of a Hollywood starlet.

1951—
A desperate man pursuing his last chance at redemption finds himself with blood on his hands and the police on his trail...

Three complete novels that, taken together, tell a single epic story, about an author whose life is shattered when violence and tragedy consume the people closest to him. It is an ingenious and emotionally powerful debut performance from literary detective and former bookseller Ariel S. Winter, one that establishes this talented newcomer as a storyteller of the highest caliber.

First publication ever!
Contains three full-length novels—the longest book in Hard Case Crime history

Re: Hard Case Crime, Part 4

So today's Kindle daily deals are 100 Prologue crime books for $.99 each. Are any of these on par with the Hard Case Crime books? And, if so, any recommendations?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.htm...DH1495J03F55T7

And Charles, last year on Facebook I asked you about bringing back the HCC shirts and you responded that there was a possibility, but understandably you were focused on the relaunch of the books. Summer's approaching. Any chance of getting my hands on one in the near future? (I'd love to show off my good taste to the world with one featuring the logo on black. )

Thanks! Just snagged that one. The 136 titles on sale are pretty daunting. After reading through the comments for the deal on Amazon, I ended up getting just one - Badge of Evil - which is the basis of Orson Welles' Touch of Evil.

http://www.amazon.com/Badge-of-Evil-...SWHPPV5MVZRY1M

Also I discovered a new site via the comments there, which has a ton of pulpy noir books (among other genres) free to download. That should keep me quite busy.

You're welcome. Looks like there's a lot to wade through there. I doubt I'll get to their books anytime soon (my reading pile is pretty big right now). Let us know if you come across any good ones.

Yeah my Kindle backlog is disgusting... but I still add because I am a collector.

Here is the link to the site filtered to the pulp category:
http://www.munseys.com/detail/mode/cat/12/Pulp_Fiction

I am basically snagging ones that have covers and the cover art exudes that pulp feel. With nothing else to go on I am left with art.

Re: Hard Case Crime, Part 4

That's what pulp covers are for. I wish you could filter their books by those that have reviews. I've been going through them by most popular and found The Night of the Hunter:

http://www.munseys.com/book/19481/Ni...he_Hunter,_The

I *almost* watched this on TCM this afternoon. (I've heard great things about this movie, but have never seen it.)

I do like that some of the books are tagged "titles that embarrassed their authors".

Ed Lacy's stuff is all over the place there. I may have to check him out.

Re: Hard Case Crime, Part 4

Hi, guys -- lots of questions to answer! First off, I'm sorry to say that we haven't struck a new deal to produce t-shirts, either featuring cover art or just the Hard Case Crime logo. Our new publisher, Titan Books, has talked about possibly producing some of the latter, but they haven't done it yet. If and when they do, we'll let everyone know.

Second, the books on sale on Amazon -- many of these are good, few are exceptional. Of course, that assessment is largely a matter of personal preference, and you might like one more that I liked less, but...I will say there are a lot of books on their list that I considered and passed on for Hard Case Crime. That doesn't mean they don't deserve to be available or that no reader will enjoy them -- in some cases I enjoyed them. But on average I didn't like them as much as the ones we wound up selecting to publish. That's the cost of publishing hundreds of titles rather than just a carefully chosen few. You gain in volume but lose in quality.

Third, Munsey's. Some of the books they've done are really outstanding. The main problem is that too often they haven't been proofread so several I've read have been peppered with typos. And I don't think any of the authors or their estates have been compensated in any way for sales of their editions. (We always pay the authors or estates something, even if legally we might not have to.)

Re: Hard Case Crime, Part 4

The Prologue book I got during the big sale - Badge of Evil - is now free and definitely worth it at that price. I finished it last weekend and then watched Touch of Evil for the first time. While I enjoyed the movie, I think I like the book better. (The two diverge significantly.)

Thanks for your input. Obviously, putting out more books should be first and foremost, but I'm glad that shirts may be a possibility. Is there an email address I could write Titan at and voice my support for their production? I just want to give you more of my money.

Re: Hard Case Crime, Part 4

This is a big get (again):

New Stephen King Thriller Coming Next June
By DAVE ITZKOFF
Stephen King

You don’t have to be Stephen King to find small-town amusement parks inherently terrifying, but that author sees enough suspense in the environs of a 1970s-era carnival – and all the rusty arcade attractions and rickety roller coasters that suggests – to set a new novel there. On Wednesday the Hard Case Crime imprint of Titan Books plans to announce that it will publish “Joyland,” a new work of fiction by Mr. King, whose protagonist is a college student working at a North Carolina theme park in the summer of 1973. While employed there the character “confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever,” the publisher said in a news release. Charles Ardai, the Hard Case Crime editor, said in a statement that “Joyland” is “a whodunit, it’s a carny novel, it’s a story about growing up and growing old, and about those who don’t get to do either because death comes for them before their time.”

Hard Case Crime, which published Mr. King’s 2005 mystery novel “The Colorado Kid,” said it would release “Joyland” in June 2013. Mr. King said in a statement that, in addition to his affection for the subject matter of the book, “I also loved the paperbacks I grew up with as a kid, and for that reason, we’re going to hold off on e-publishing this one for the time being.” He added, “‘Joyland’ will be coming out in paperback, and folks who want to read it will have to buy the actual book.”
