Alex Cross (Dir: Rob Cohen, S: Tyler Perry) -- 10/26/2012

Didn't even realize they were making this until a month ago and when I saw who was playing Alex Cross, I was disappointed. I liked Kiss the Girls and while Along Came a Spider wasn't great, it was passable entertainment. I don't know about Tyler Perry in the role. Also, being directed by Rob Cohen isn't exactly promising either.

The supporting cast includes: Rachel Nichols, Jean Reno, Edward Burns, Matthew Fox and John C. McGinley.

Not sure if it's being called "Alex Cross" or "I, Alex Cross", though apparently it's only loosely based on the novel.

I remember when it was announced, but I thought Perry was directing. Cohen directing doesn't make that news any better.

I enjoyed the Freeman films, but this just doesn't inspire excitement at all...

Tyler Perry = no sale for me. Maybe if it's rated R like the other two Cross films I will use a free redbox rental on it.

Ah, ok, thanks. I did a Google search but didn't realize it was the same movie (I just saw Cross and then Idris Elba (didn't know he was initially up for the role).

Even if it's under two hours?

Tyler Perry is an unfunny joke.

Is the film titled "Alex Cross", or "Alex Cross-Dresser"? I mean, it does star Tyler Perry.

Kiss the Girls was okay, but Along Came a Spider was an abomination. Neither were very good adaptations from the novels. Not that the novels are all that good -- every one I've read had the exact same "twist" ending.

Considering this is a Cohen production and Tyler Perry hates swear words, I'm assuming this will be PG-13.

Good news then, the script was co-written by the guy who wrote that adaptation...

Re: Alex Cross (Dir: Rob Cohen, S: Tyler Perry) -- 10/26/2012

Tyler Perry is no worse a choice for Alex Cross than Morgan Freeman was. I've always "pictured" Denzel Washington when reading the books, but he's probably too old now to play Cross. Both the movies with Freeman are a pale comparison to the books...this one doesn't sound much better (apprarantly, it's only loosly based on one of the more-recent books..."I, Alex Cross", I believe).

According to the novels, Cross looks like a young Muhammad Ali, so Will Smith is probably the BEST choice for Cross, right?

Probably but I doubt the production companies wants to shell out the amount of money it'd take to get him, although I'm not sure how much Will Smith makes given he's been MIA in blockbuster films of late (looks like the last one was 2008 in Hancock).

BTW, just looked and it seems Summit is distributing it in theaters. The other two were Paramount releases.

How about Idris Elba as Cross?

According to the old thread, that's who was originally tapped 3 years ago (or however long ago it was). I would've loved to see him in the role.

Like I posted in the previous thread, Henry Simmons of NYPD: Blue, has always been my vision of Alex Cross(well at least since he appeared on Blue).

Spoiler:

He's already 40 but could easily pass for younger.

I used to love the Cross books (before Patterson became a novel factory) and was always disappointed with the first two movies. Freeman is always awesome, but starting out so old left them with nowhere to go with the character.

I'm fine with this being the current thread since it now has an official title and Perry is now the star, not Elba.

Honestly, I haven't seen any of Tyler Perry's works as an actor except his brief part in Star Trek.

Tell me why does this guy get some much hate? Is it because he mostly makes those African-American and Diary of a Mad Black Woman dramas that make a shit load of money? I'm guessing that most of the people in this forum have never seen any of his movies.

^He's a black guy who makes wildly successful movies that aren't predicated around superheroes or Liam Neeson. To the average Internet white guy, that's the equivalent of not wetting the sponge.

That would've made me see the movie. After The Wire and Luther, I don't know why Elba isn't a much bigger star.

Elba is a fantastic actor. I think he could have easily pulled off playing Cross. I even enjoyed his episodes on The Office. The guy is versatile.
