Continuing from Blu-ray release announcements - Part II (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/hd-talk/529482-blu-ray-release-announcements-part-ii.html).

As a quick reference for this first post, High Def Digest keeps a pretty up-to-date list of releases on their website (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/releasedates.html).

I'm praying we get a Lazarus/Speedman/Portnoy commentary of some sort. Getting Cruise to do his character would be a huge bonus.

I'd kill to see an "in memoriam" feature on Steve Coogan's character. Suffered a hilarious Deep Blue Sea-like death.

Warner UK Line-Up Includes First Four Batman Films
Posted September 29, 2008 12:15 PM by Josh Dreuth

Warner Home Video UK has revealed their Blu-ray line-up for the remainder of the year in the UK. Besides receiving many titles already available in the US, they are also planning on releasing some films which have yet to see Blu-ray release. This includes the first four Batman films - 'Batman', 'Batman Returns', 'Batman Forever', and 'Batman & Robin' - which are all scheduled to be released on December 29th.

Anyone want to take bets how bad the PQ's will be?

I've seen Batman and Batman Returns on HBOHD and they looked pretty good to me. For that matter I thought the 2004 looked very nice for DVD. The masters shouldn't be very old at all, so it's just a matter of the encode I think.

Arriving a week later on 13th October are Poltergeist, Interview with the Vampire and Constantine. Also confirmed are Seasons 6 and 7 of Smallville.

Into November, you’ve got A Perfect Storm, The Omega Man and The Wild Bunch on the 3rd and Supernatural Season 3 on the 10th. Also on the 10th are the previously announced Speed Racer and Band of Brothers (the latter is a HBO/Warner release).

They have yet to announce any of their digibook films as regular release. You either have to import them (only some are available overseas) or just buy some empty BD cases and print custom cover art out.

Digibook is apparently a pretty big success for Warner though (looking at sales numbers). I know I would have never bought HTWWW, Dirty Harry, Bonnie and Clyde or Natural Born Killers if not for it. They are really fun to collect. I hope they continue with them.

Ugh.

Warner Home Video have announced the US Blu-ray Disc release of The Notebook (Limited Edition Gift Set) on 20th January 2009 priced at $39.99 SRP. Spanning six decades, The Notebook is based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks and is a romantic story that focuses on two teenagers from opposite sides of the tracks (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) who fall in love during one summer together but are tragically forced apart. When they reunite seven years later, their passionate romance is rekindled, forcing one of them to choose between true love and class order.

Collectibles include a photo album and scrapbook with images from the movie plus space for your own photos; scrapbook accessories such as stickers and photo corners; a stationery set with letterhead and envelopes and collectible bookmarks.

No extras are mentioned in the press release, but we’re guessing most if not all of the content from the existing New Line DVD release will make it to the Blu-ray. Extras on the DVD release include:

* 12 deleted scenes with optional editor commentary
* All in the Family: Nick Cassavetes Profile featurette
* Nicholas Sparks: A Simple Story Well Told featurette
* Southern Exposure: Locating THE NOTEBOOK featurette
* Casting Rachel and Ryan featurette
* Feature-length commentary by director Nick Cassavetes
* Feature-length commentary by novelist Nicholas Sparks
* Rachel McAdams’ screen test
* Theatrical trailer

I don't get it. Will people actually buy the Blu-ray for the collectible crap that's being forced upon them at an additional $10 MSRP? Instead of TrueHD tracks Warner is pumping out garbage like this (not the film, but the unneeded collectibles).

Paramount Home Entertainment has released a TV series-based hi-def home video disc package once before, with last November's Star Trek - Season 1: Remastered HD DVD and DVD Combo, which (as the title tells) was for the now-defunct HD DVD hi-def format. But since the studio has moved back into the Blu-ray Disc camp, they haven't announced any "TV-on-BD" titles for the winning hi-def disc format...until today. And it's a killer title, too! This morning they've revealed that January 6th will see Dexter - The 1st Season on Blu-ray Disc.

Dexter is a crime drama about Dexter Morgan, a man who leads a double life as an incredibly likeable forensics expert for the Miami Police Department and as an emotionless vigilante serial killer. Taught by his foster father to harness his lust for blood and killing, Dexter lives by his own strict moral code - he only kills murderers who can't otherwise be brought to justice. Dexter is a killer who grapples with fitting into society while, at the same time, he struggles with his inability to feel emotion. The irony of Dexter's life is that he works closely as a blood splatter analyst with the very people who hunt his kind - the homicide departments.

All 12 episodes, running 576 minutes, will be presented in 1080p high definition widescreen. Audio soundtrack will be in English - 5.1 Dolby TrueHD, with a Spanish - 2.0 Dolby Digital option. English subtitles are also going to be available. Package art, bonus material and other details haven't been provided yet, but stay tuned and we'll update you just as soon as we can!

You mean Universal releasing a new catalog title? No, not this year. They are now working into 2009 for catalog releases as are most studios.

The Matrix, Amadeus Digibooks - Quarter 1

Warner Home Video has revealed that they will bring 'The Matrix' and 'Amadeus: Director's Cut' to Blu-ray in the first quarter of next year. Both titles will receive digibook treatment, meaning they will come packaged with a hard cover book containing exclusive pictures and essays. Additionally, 'Amadeus' will come a CD sampler.

source: blu-ray.com

---------------------

dobyblue posted at blu-ray.com that Amadeus likely won't have lossless audio because the encode was done 2 years ago.

dobyblue posted today that WB has now done a new encode about a month ago. So there is now a chance it will have lossless audio. The old encode was DD 5.1 only.

I am so on that Zodiac Blu-Ray...though sadly it is only director's cut. Paramount could have put both cuts on. But, the director's cut and extras are phenomenal so this complaint is minor.

Looking forward to future Hitchcock Blu-Rays.

The DC cut is 5 more minutes of footage...its like two scene extensions, thats it.

Here is the changes:

* Melvin Belli (Brian Cox) talks about his Safari trip (when the Zodiac letter came to his house)
* Toschi (Mark Ruffalo) introduces himself to the Riverside Police Chief
* New scene between Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Avery (Robert Downey Jr.)
* 3-Way Conversation laying Leigh as suspect to get search warrant
* Extended audio montage (over a black screen)
* Plus extra bits of dialogue

You can dictate a few things like that in your account on the Invelos site. It's not in the standalone app.

If you log into your account on the Invelos site, go to My Profiler > Online Collection.

The only two colors they offer are "In Blue" and "Plum Peachy", so I went with the latter.

The default sort is Style Default, which I changed to Alpha By Title - that's the only other option. It must add the release date as part of the style.

I would imagine Death Race 2008 would probably be out on Blu by the end of the year, but I don't think it's been announced yet. That should be a pretty kicks ass looking and sounding disc.

This is the description of Death Trance that was from the listing, which is a Japanese movie:

A fearsome samurai hungering for the ultimate challenge is forced to do battle with a powerful temple monk intent on preventing ultimate destruction in an action-packed swordplay adventure in which the fate of the world lies in a mysterious coffin. Grave (Tak Sakaguchi) is a samurai whose power is unequaled by mortal man. In his desperate quest to find a suitable foe with whom to do battle, Grave steals an ancient coffin from the Tougan Temple said to contain the mythical Goddess of Destruction. Now, as Grave drags the coffin across the countryside in search of a way to pry it open and unleash the power contained inside, a temple monk charged with the task of ensuring the safety of mankind sets out to stop Grave from freeing the Goddess of Destruction even if it means sacrificing his own life in the process.

On a side note, this was the movie that made me believe Jamie Foxx would become a star, and he's great in this (as are Pacino, Woods, Modine, Quaid et al), possibly robbed of an Oscar nom. Tanking at the box office means nothing when it comes to BD releases. Take for example "In the Name of the King". Hell, even "Southland Tales" which made only $275,380 is getting a BD release.

Yeah, neither of those releases you mentioned are Universal titles... they aren't in the habit of putting out titles like this on BD (I'm still sitting, waiting, wishing for In Bruges)... I think if Hamlet 2 was a big hit, it would street day and date on BD, so saying that tanking had NOTHING to do with it is slightly off base IMO. So far it's track record isn't great - if DVD proves otherwise, we'll probably see a BD in the future.

Who knows, maybe they'll announce it and are just behind the 8 ball...but Universal isn't handling titles the same way these other studios are. Fox will release most genre pics and Sony will release just about ANYTHING on blu-ray... I'm guessing both of those titles performed well enough on DVD to justify these releases... like I said if Hamlet 2 is a dvd smash, then Universal will take note and you'll probably see it a few months down the road...

Fox did skip out on Lars and the Real Girl, Charlie Bartlett, The Darjeeling Limited and Waitress. All studios have skipped releasing certain films which is just mind-boggling especially if they think Blu-ray is the next format. Everything should be released on it, period.

I'd imagine it probably still costs quite a bit to release on Blu-ray: more, at least, than the studios are willing to shell out for titles which they feel probably aren't going to sell very well.

Also, aren't they limited -- based on the availability of manufacturing facilities -- as to the number of titles they can put out? Especially with regard to BD50s, which I thought was one of the reasons why Warner and Universal are releasing so many BD25s . . .

Amadeus Director’s Cut, with an additional 30 minutes which includes deleted scenes and extended scenes, will be the Blu-ray Hi-Def version of the title and will be presented with an exclusive bonus book packaging with 35 pages of insightful essays, beautiful photography, trivia and details about Mozart and his music. The Blu-ray Hi-Def also includes a special CD compilation from the Best Sound Oscar-winning original film soundtrack created especially for this release. About The Film

Amadeus (1984)
Amadeus. The man. The music. The magic. The madness. This is the incredible, mostly true story about the relationship between two composers in 18th century Vienna -- Antonio Salieri (F. The film unfolds in a series of flashbacks, as Salieri is consumed with jealously by Mozart’s natural talent, and is unable to accept the knowledge that he will never possess the genius of a man he cannot stand.

I think that was in the international version, along with the highly controversial "bloodbath" ending. Supposedly there was another alternate ending, too, which involved some time travel stuff wherein "Chief" from "Cuckoo's Nest" smothers Mozart with a pillow.

That Milos Forman. What a card!:)

What was censored?

Near the end of the film, when our protagonist shoots a bad guy in the head. The blood splatter is less extreme. It's REALLY nothing to be concerned with, and Cronenberg himself dismisses it as being insignificant.

Hell yes on Generation Kill.

It won't. Specs were suppose to be released last week for Mamma Mia and that still has yet to come out. So far two catalog titles remain with a placeholder date of the day after Christmas. I really hope one of them makes it because I'll gladly replace my HD DVD copy with that Blu-ray.

No offense but having been on the losing side of the format war, the only satisfaction I have is that I already have a bunch of movies not out on Blu. Don't get me wrong, this is not about being vindictive, this is about having so many movies I want on Blu that if I already have them on HD it does me no good so I'd rather see the resources going toward totally new releases.

I happen to own all three Bourne flicks in HD-DVD, but that doesn't mean I'd rather have Universal release three other films in Blu instead. I realize that, um, there are people out there who DON'T own these in 1080p.. and they have as much a right to own them as I do.

Yes, it'd be great for Universal to release their entire catalog by New Year's Day, but it isn't going to happen. I understand they need to play catch-up for the people who didn't want to spend $50 on, what is now essentially, a paperweight.

Let me correct that. I was actually format neutral and owned Bluray before HDDVD. I also believe they have the right to own them in 1080p as well. I just know I'm not going to upgrade anything I currently have in HD to a Bluray version. So for me, the movies already on HDDVD are a non-issue. I have a laundry list of movies that have only been released in first generation, non-anamorphic, DD 2.0 that I want to see first. IE. Memphis Belle, Gross Point Blank, Armageddon.

No different than the guy who likes 1980's European cinema to prefer those are released before recent blockbusters.
