I wondered if there were any opinions about good British/Irish/Scottish movies? I usually seek these out, as we've been there several times over the last five years and I love the culture (and the movies that come out of that region). I'd love some suggestions - especially those that show the culture. Here's some of my personal favorites:

Dang, forgot Wicker Man (...shiver...), Full Monty, and Bend it Like Beckham. I haven't seen the Commitments since it first came on VHS. My Beautiful Laundrette didn't do it for me. Not so much the gay theme, but because I felt it really didn't go anywhere.

Also, to MartinBlank, thanks for mentioning Shaun of the Dead - fantastic! Funnier the second time than the first!

LOCAL HERO and COMFORT AND JOY both by Scottish director Bill Forsyth. Comfort though is still not on dvd.

Seconded. Local Hero is one of the greatest films of all time. I'd add Gregory's Girl by Forsyth to that list as well, though it's a little corny.

I just saw Naked (Criterion) by Mike Leigh. Very good. And I strongly second the Michael Caine Get Carter . Tim Roth's The War Zone is a tough watch, but is highly acclaimed. To Sir With Love is another good one. I'm rambling now.....

Yeah, I forgot Billy Elliot, which is a great film (and features The Jam's song: Town Called Malice).

I'd highly recommend Waking Ned Devine if you haven't seen it (especially if you like Billy Elliot). It's a great, fun, funny film and you'll totally dig the two main characters. It's top-notch!

Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx

Charming little movie, very nice use of Dublin locations. Gene Wilder is quite good as the title character and doesn't get too bogged down in his "Oirish" accent. It was available on DVD but is out of print (copies are probably floating around).

+1 for Local Hero, one of my favorite movies. As I've said before, I'm sure the producers of Northern Exposure saw this, went home, and decided to copy everything they could about it in a TV series.

Also my favorite all time movie, Black Narcissus. I wish I were watching it right now.

Many, many British movies, not familiar with that many that are Scottish or Irish.

Nil By Mouth will show you the underbelly of Southern London. It's also directed by Gary Oldman. Excellent film. 'Cuss words galore, though.
