Some of your favorite British/Scottish/Irish films?

I wondered if there were any opinions about good British/Irish/Scottish movies? I usually seek these out, as we've been there several times over the last five years and I love the culture (and the movies that come out of that region). I'd love some suggestions - especially those that show the culture. Here's some of my personal favorites:

28 Days Later
An American Werewolf in London - Added
Angela's Ashes (book is better, tho)
Bloody Sunday
The Boys and Girls from County Clare
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Field
In the Name of the Father
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
Matchmaker
Michael Collins
Millions
Once Upon A Time in the Midlands
The Quiet Man
Saving Grace
Shallow Grave
Snatch
Waking Ned Devine
and of course, best for last:
Trainspotting

Haven't yet seen:
My Left Foot

Any suggestions for someone who really likes these types of films?

Thanks!

Dang, forgot Wicker Man (...shiver...), Full Monty, and Bend it Like Beckham. I haven't seen the Commitments since it first came on VHS. My Beautiful Laundrette didn't do it for me. Not so much the gay theme, but because I felt it really didn't go anywhere.

Also, to MartinBlank, thanks for mentioning Shaun of the Dead - fantastic! Funnier the second time than the first!

Haven't seen nor heard of Dog Soldiers nor Dead Meat...

Mano 11-21-05 07:03 PM

Layer Cake
Unleashed (you could probably call this a french film though)
Ae Fond Kiss...

Can anyone recommend I'll Sleep When I'm Dead? I've seen mixed reviews but would like to here some DVDTalker's opinions.

LOCAL HERO and COMFORT AND JOY both by Scottish director Bill Forsyth. Comfort though is still not on dvd.

Seconded. Local Hero is one of the greatest films of all time. I'd add Gregory's Girl by Forsyth to that list as well, though it's a little corny.

Notting Hill?

To many to mention.

I'm a huge Anglophile and I can't get enough UK movies.

I also enjoy Asian(Indian) movies from the UK.

I just saw Naked (Criterion) by Mike Leigh. Very good. And I strongly second the Michael Caine Get Carter . Tim Roth's The War Zone is a tough watch, but is highly acclaimed. To Sir With Love is another good one. I'm rambling now.....

Libby 11-22-05 04:53 AM

Notting Hill
Rory O Shea Was Here
Shaun of the Dead
Commitments
Love Actually
Waking Ned Devine
Trainspotting
Bend it Like Beckham
Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were Rabbit

HOLY JEEBUS! I just realized I left off one of my all-time favorites:

...wait for it...

...here it comes...

QUADROPHENIA!

Looks like I need to get back on Netflix or Blockbuster. :)

Giantrobo, can you take a stab at some at some? I'm going to add them to my queue, along with some of the suggestions given.

Thanks!

More Mike Leigh: Secrets and Lies, and Life is Sweet.

Oh ok.

I'll start with your list edited to my tastes:

An American Werewolf in London

That's it. No seriously, I just haven't seen the rest of the movies on your list.

My short list:

Elizabeth
Secrets and Lies
Billy Elliot
Remains of the Day

modfather 11-22-05 02:20 PM

Yeah, I forgot Billy Elliot, which is a great film (and features The Jam's song: Town Called Malice).

I'd highly recommend Waking Ned Devine if you haven't seen it (especially if you like Billy Elliot). It's a great, fun, funny film and you'll totally dig the two main characters. It's top-notch!

Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx

Charming little movie, very nice use of Dublin locations. Gene Wilder is quite good as the title character and doesn't get too bogged down in his "Oirish" accent. It was available on DVD but is out of print (copies are probably floating around).

+1 for Local Hero, one of my favorite movies. As I've said before, I'm sure the producers of Northern Exposure saw this, went home, and decided to copy everything they could about it in a TV series.

Also my favorite all time movie, Black Narcissus. I wish I were watching it right now.

Many, many British movies, not familiar with that many that are Scottish or Irish.

The Krays.

Jesus Christ! When will they release this on region 1? I've been waiting for 5 years.

Jazzbutcher 11-22-05 06:50 PM

Secret of Roan Inish
Let Him Have It
War of the Buttons

Cellar Door 11-22-05 11:01 PM

Two of my favorites are

Brassed Off
About a Boy

Lair of the White Worm
is interesting.

conscience 11-23-05 02:54 AM

Nil By Mouth will show you the underbelly of Southern London. It's also directed by Gary Oldman. Excellent film. 'Cuss words galore, though.
